Media Ethics and Conflict in Mindanao

Terrorists, kidnappers, corrupt officials and all other undesirable characters in society are usually portrayed by the media practitioners to the image of Muslims in Southern Philippines. Mass media practitioners have contributed to the building of stereotypes to Muslims.

In her article entitled “The Other Face of Mindanao,” Gina Mission said that Mindanao is portrayed as a war zone and that for the uninitiated; it is easier to visualize an island at war than go to the place and see for one's self the validity of such a description. Mass media practitioners deliver news from Mindanao only in terms of conflict, crime and violence. Headlines range from bombings, shootouts, military ambushes, kidnapping incidents and failed ceasefires. Muslims are involved. These give the public the idea that there is a full-blown “war” in Mindanao.

Another issue as cited by Marites Vitug, Editor-in-Chief of Newsbreak, is the use of Christian and Muslim labels, even if religion has nothing to do with stories, continues—i.e. Muslim kidnappers/bandits but never Christian kidnappers/bandits. Vitug continued that with such kind of reporting, the roots of conflict are not illuminated. It does not throw light on the political and economic processes that generate conflict. It does not address the complex relationship between state and rebels, elites and rebels.

She added that journalists failed to adequately distinguish between different parties to the conflict, the MNLF, MILF, and civilian Muslim groups. A TV journalist even said there was no difference between the MILF and the Abu Sayyaf, that they were all related, conspiring to overthrow the government. (Abu Sayyaf is an extremist group. The MILF has denounced the Abu Sayyaf.)

As a result, mass media practitioner's portrayal has prevented the investors to step forward because they get scared by what they have read in the newspapers, heard over the radio, and seen in the television. Another outcome is that many non-Muslims hold certain stereotypes of Muslims. An August 2004 poll in the Philippines showed that 52 percent had a favorable view of Islam while 41 percent had an unfavorable opinion. This showed a decline because in June 2003, those with favorable opinion of Islam reached 58 percent. Those who viewed Islam unfavorably was the same, 41 percent.

Based from a data released by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao, a non governmental organization working towards accelerated economic growth in Mindanao and ensuring that the benefits of growth are widely distributed among its people, a lot of development activities are happening in Mindanao, yet it is only the insurgency problem that gets reported.

According to Escote(2008),mass media practitioners play a crucial role in forging peace in a world that seems to be preoccupied with violence. He stressed out that mass media practitioners could either make or break Mindanao with what and how they report events and activities, especially in something complicated like a peace process.

Mass media practitioners should be sensitive to the faith and cultures of Muslims when they are covering events in Mindanao. Rufa Cagoco-Guiam, Mindanao State University Center for Peace and Development Studies Director, in her article entitled “Telling the Truth of the "Other": Images of Islam and Muslims in the Philippines”, related the do's and don'ts for non-Muslim mass media practitioners covering events and processes with the Muslims in Mindanao:

(1) Mass media practitioners must observe proper dress and decorum when doing coverage or interviews because part of becoming a Muslim means being always modest in one's dress;

(2) Mass media practitioners must investigate the historical background of the Mindanao conflict and the Philippine government's policy and guidelines for peace negotiations;

(3) Mass media practitioners must be highly conscious of the distinctions between terms denoting religious identity and those used to refer to cultures or groups of persons;

(4) Mass media practitioners must examine not only one source, but all possible sources of information about the circumstances that engendered the Mindanao conflict;

(5) Mass media practitioners must read up on the various cultures of the 13 Muslin ethno linguistic groups; and

(6) Mass media practitioners must be extra careful when describing people who are suspects in crimes.

In her article “Positive Spin for Mindanao”, Rina Jimenez David, Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist, suggested that to project a more realistic image of Mindanao, a simple lesson in geography for reporters, editors, publishers, and news producers in Metro Manila must be given.

Mass media practitioners must be specific also in giving reports. When there is a bombing incident, journalists must dateline their stories where the events took place rather than just saying it was in Mindanao.

Hence, mass media practitioners must be aware of their critical and influential role. They can help in solving the conflict and they may also impede the peace process in Mindanao.

,On my side I disagree the statement about "full-blown war" in Mindanao.War in Mindanao yes it happened but not totally all placed there,I heard in the news that Massacred, bombing incidenced in Maguindanao, kidnap for ransom in claveria and ect.but this is not a reason to say the Mindanao is full-blown war because all dangerous incidenced is happened in Luzon Visayas Mindanao or in a whole world. The mass media practitioner portrayal has prevented the investors to step forward because they get scared by what they have read in the newspapers, well isn't true? "No matter it happened and what they say" there's a lot of development activities in Mindanao that has given benefit for us.In fact,Mindanao is most beautiful Island tourist spot, that's why more foreiner visit here and is not a dangered place.

    I lived there peacefully....

The uncertainty of the state-sponsored autonomy package has contributed not only to the insecurity of development in southern Philippines but also to anxiety about safeguarding, preserving and protecting the integrity of Muslim identity, culture and religion in Mindanao.

For me as a student, I agree to the statement that mass media practitioners must be aware of their critical and influential role.In addition to that, mass media must specify all the details such as where, when, what, and how so that people understand. Not all people understand all the things or the events that is happening here in mindanao, generally we students. It is broad to think of.

  4. I strongly agree with the statement "Media practitioners should be sensitive to the faith and cultures of Muslims when they are covering events in Mindanao." According to my observations, majority of the media people since then are insensitive to other peoples' perspectives, beliefs, and culture, and among those who are stereotyped are the Muslim people in Mindanao. I believe that this wrong doing of the media is somehow delivering the mass to the wrong direction because of "biased reporting", thus resulting to discrimination and stereotyping of Muslim people.

I agree that mass media practitioners must get more information and background of their report. They must not only report the bad side of Mindanao showing that the whole place has no protection for investors and other people that can possibly help boom the Mindanao economically.Mass media practitioners must share the information to others with good news from the place, and what to do to show respect to the Muslims and Christian people.Showing the people of Luzon,Visayas and the whole world that Mindanao is a safe place to live in.

  6. I agree with the statement "Mass media practitioners should be sensitive to the faith and cultures of Muslims when covering events in Mindanao." It is because the media can easily influence the people with the information they are telling. They are also exaggerating information at times that people may think that Mindanao is a "war zone". That is why the media should be careful of the information they report so that people will know what is true and exact, no more no less.

  7. I strongly agree with this statement: mass media practitioners must be highly conscious of the distinctions between terms denoting religious identity and those used to refer to cultures or groups of persons because we as a person has our own history of life. We as a commoner or even media practitioners should not give critics and wrong judgement of our co-Filipino for we are all in one nation. Instead of showing bad images about Mindanao, like making Mindanao as an unsafe place for the investors, why don't they help Mindanao to stand economically? Not all living in Mindanao are bad or let's say not all Muslims are bad. It depends on how you treat and how you think.

I strongly disagree with the opinion that there is a full-blown “war” in Mindanao. They should specify their report for not all places or cities in Mindanao are full-blown war. That is why I agree with the statement that mass media practitioners should be specific with their report 'cause they might affect other people that are not involved with this kind of situation.

I strongly disagree with the thought that there are more Muslim kidnappers/bandits but never Christian kidnappers/bandits. Not all Muslims are bad or criminals and not all Christians are innocent. This shows that there is a bias between these two religions and this gives the public the wrong impression about the Muslims which results to discrimination.

I strongly agree that mass media practitioners must be aware of their critical and influential role. They can help in solving the conflict and they may also impede the peace process in Mindanao for they are such a big influence to people.

I strongly disagree about the statement that there is a full-blown "war" in Mindanao. Maybe there are some place in Mindanao that is extremely experiencing the terror of war but not the entire Mindanao. As we all know, Davao is also part of Mindanao and base on what i have seen and observed there is no war here in Davao, maybe there are some incidents that happens here like "Riding in tandem", "kidnap for ransom groups" and etc. but those crimes have been successfully illiminated by our police. I think that the statement that there is a full-blown war in Mindanao is just a product of the imaginative minds of media's, they just misinterpret the situation here in Mindanao, and i agree about statement that "Mass media practitioners must investigate the historical background of the Mindanao conflict and the Philippine government's policy and guidelines for peace negotiations" to avoid incorrect delivering of news...

  12. Mass media can also be the reason why some issues getting bigger. But, we must not keep on judging them because they are the reason why we are being update with the news and we can get information. They may sometimes exaggerate the story perhaps they just want to let the viewer and readers understand more. Also they are in need also of some trainings, seminars as well as motivation to get their job well. They may seldom don't specified the incidents; the reason can be, they just want to protect the dignity of one's place and a group of people. No one is perfect!Yet,we also have some faults and mistakes.Being a journalist is like a businessman in order to get the attention of the viewer they must have the ability to persuade, being a risk-taker and an opportunist. If the issue is very interesting they focus on that and try to seek some information. Then, if possible they have to compare and contrast. In such a way, that the two parties have conflict.Just like what happen in Mindanao the issues between Muslims and Christians. It is not the fault of the mass media that the investors got step forward because of what they read in the newspapers, heard the news and seen in the television about Muslims. It's actually their choice because if that investors has a desire and will to invest in that place it's absurd that they have to give-up to invest just because of some bad issues.

Journalists is one of the reliable source we could ever have and if we misinterpret their reports we are the one who will be affected.

  22. Portraying Mindanao as a war zone and an island of war is an absurd description. In fact, Mindanao now a days gradually attained the unity of the relationship between Christians and Muslims. Regarding to religion, Muslims and Christians had no difference in terms of the behavior of a person. There are lot of criminals, terrorist, rapist and other immoral activities that was participated by the non-Muslim citizens. Involvement of Muslims on war in Mindanao was a false accusation.

Mindanao State University Center for Peace and Development Studies Director Rufa Cagoco-Guiam, in her article entitled “Telling the Truth of the "Other": Images of Islam and Muslims in the Philippines”, Mass media practitioners indeed must aware when describing people who are suspects in crimes. Especially in reporting the condition here in Mindanao.Because some article destroys the reputation of Mindanao. For Mindanao is a safe place and is welcome to everyone. Truly then, that they must be aware and careful of what they are searching and reporting.

Not all updates and report of the Medias are true unless they proved it and thoroughly searched it.

I agree with the statement "MASS MEDIA PRACTITIONERS COULD EITHER MAKE OR BREAK MINDANAO WITH WHAT AND HOW THEY REPORT EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, ESPECIALLY IN SOMETHING COMPLICATED LIKE A PEACE PROCESS. It is indeed very true that media should be sensitive on how they deliver reports and covers. It should be promoting Mindanao and not to harm them by these insensitive reports. Mass media should not be just doing their job as reporters but somehow do something more on promoting good things not just in Mindanao but in the whole country. As an individual we deserve to obtain peace not just in our mind but in our dignity. We are what we thought that we are! We are what we say who we are, somehow if we deliver good words we obtain good feedback.

I just want to express my opinion. I am quite disappointed by Gina Mission about her article entitled "The other face of Mindanao" and also for those ideas thinking that Mindanao is a full blown war. We can't absolutely say that Mindanao is actually portrayed as a war zone because not all the cities, municipalities, provinces, and regions in Mindanao are involve in this kind of war. This war is particularly happened in the ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao).

They might think that due to these so called "war" in Mindanao, many visitors and tourists are afraid to visit and discover the beauty of Mindanao. One of the example due to that "war" is the travel ban from Australia to Mindanao. We all know that Davao city is one of the peaceful cities in the Philippines but due to that ban, the Australians think that their life are at risk if they go to Davao simply because Davao is obviously part in Mindanao. It already affects the tourism of the city and also for its economy.

On the contrary, We all know that mass media has a big role in telling their news about the latest issues of our society. Mass media practitioners should follow the 6 guidelines of do's and dont's for covering events and process with the Muslim in Mindanao for them to observe and respect their culture. Through these, there is a fair in reporting so that many of our fellow Filipinos can't allegedly accuse about in Mindanao. And lastly, we all know that there is an ongoing peace talks about creating of Bangsamoro and if that will be created, I think that there is totally peace in Mindanao.

It is all about on how the reporters, journalists, and media portray. The Mindanao and our Muslim brothers and sisters. Their statement about Mindanao is partly true yet unfair. Partly true because we can't deny the fact that chaos are rampant in Mindanao and the idea of "war zone" is something related on what are the happenings in Mindanao. But it is also unfair for those other regions in Mindanao who lived peacefully, not only to those the idea of the society, they were rate unequal to other member of the society.

  33. I strongly, firmly, contradict to the statement that Mindanao is portrayed as a" war zone" as of the fact that war is inevitable in a particular place. Therefore, mass media practitioners should not generalize that all places here in Mindanao are experiencing chaos because this will lead to misunderstanding in which other people from Luzon and Visayas might come up to the thought that Mindanao, the so called Land of Promise, is not a safe place. Like for instance, a person from Mindanao went to Manila, then he was asked where he came from and when he started to introduce that he was from Mindanao, people might think that he is savage and its very unfair for us people from Mindanao to be criticized and stereotyped that way. That's why mass media practitioners should be specific in every aspect of their news especially when it talks about our beloved Mindanao.

For me, I do believe that Mass Media Practitioners plays an influential role in the society. They can be peacemakers but on the other hand, they can trigger war.Mass Media Practitioners are the one responsible in updating people through different forms - newspapers, radios, televisions and etc. They are the one who handle and enter a specific issue, work for it to gain detailed information.
The most viral issue nowadays, that is still active for a years is the Conflict in Mindanao, between the Muslims and the Christians.Muslims are usually involved in headlines such as bombings, shootouts, ambushes, terrorism and kidnapping;the reason why people from different places are afraid of going to Mindanao for their security's sake. They don't even featured the other side of Mindanao and the great people living there. In short,Mass Media Practitioners only focus and stick themselves in a particular issue what they think can capture people's attention. This is one of the mistakes of the Mass Media Practitioners.
As a concerned student,Mass Media Practitioners should be extra careful in bringing up a said issue. They should be aware of the words they're going to use to avoid any misunderstandings that can lead to conflicts. They should consider people around them and be futuristic enough to the instances might happen. They should not just talk, write and deliver the issue just for the sake that it is their responsibility,it is their job.Indeed, they should do it HONESTLY.

In my opinion about this topic Media Ethics and Conflicts in Mindanao. We cannot deny the fact that Mindanao is named as a "war zone"it is because there are places in Mindanao that is not a peaceful place to live.Mindanao is known of conflicts, crimes and violence that until now no one as a higher rank politician can resolved this devastating problem. It is also because the people living in Mindanao has no "UNITY".Which is the key to reach the goal of everybody "PEACE".

Regarding to the issue of bombings, shootouts, military ambushes and etc.Who are being suspected? the Muslims, where in their part It is an unlawful accusation .For me that is a big mistake because not all Muslims have the same principles and goals in life. There are also Muslims who wanted to have a peaceful community.

For me, I strongly disagree that all crimes and conflicts in Mindanao Muslims are the criminals, because I believe that some Christians too are responsible also in the big issue here in Mindanao.

"Mass media practitioners could either make or break Mindanao with what and how they report events and activities, especially in something complicated like a peace process." That statement according to Escote(2008) caught my attention about how mass media practitioners deliver news from Mindanao. For me, it is truly unjust that they only deliver news from Mindanao in terms of conflict, crime and violence. Why? Simply because there are lots of development activities here in Mindanao that we should be proud of. But, the problem with them is that they are always looking Mindanao generally on its negative side. Can't they just focus on the positive ones? They are criticizing Mindanao only because of the headlines range from bombings, shootouts, military ambushes, kidnapping incidents and failed ceasefires were Muslims are involved. Were in fact, there are also a lot of crime scenes being reported that is happening outside in Mindanao were most of the suspects are not a Muslim.
Specifically, maybe in some places there are conflicts that is happening in Mindanao, but not to be generalized that there is a full blown "war" there.

Somehow I agree about the do's and dont's for non-Muslim mass media practitioners covering events and processes with the Muslim in Mindanao. They should be sensitive enough in dealing with those issues. Its just a matter of what we call RESPECT.

I agree to the text, the image of our Muslim brothers are bad, especially the Muslims in Mindanao. Although there are Muslim kidnappers and terrorist, there are also christian kidnappers and terrorist, but why is it that only Muslims are criticized? It is unfair.
And the image of Mindanao is also affected by these bad image of our Muslim brothers. As said in the text, mass media practitioner's portrayal has prevented the investors to step forward in Mindanao because they get scared by what they have read in the newspapers, heard over the radio, and seen in the television.
Mass media practitioners can greatly affects peoples mind so they should be careful about what they are reporting or writing, because not all Muslims are kidnappers or terrorist and Mindanao is not a war zone.

  38. Stereotyping is in our nature that is why we tend to stick to the idea that the cause of terrorism and chaos in Mindanao are our beloved Muslim brothers when in truth Christians commit as much crime a regular criminal, Muslim or not commits. Like how the article talked about the Media's use of Christian and Muslim labels, even if religion has nothing to do with stories. This is one of the root cause of why the Filipino citizens feared our Muslims brothers. In support with the idea, instead of spoon feeding the people about the danger of Mindanao why don't the media introduced its tourist attractions like the Maguindanao's Limpongo hot spring, this way the people will have a different outlook about Maguindanao.

However, everything is not the Media's fault. We citizens also contribute to the infamous image the land of Mindanao have. We immediately believe what the Media tells us even if it is not wholly factual and correct. That is why we should be vigilant and judicious about what we believe in. Everyone is entitled with their own, the only thing we can do is to respect it.

We can't deny that the fact of being a mass media practitioners play an important role in our society. But the truth is instead of giving a lot of information they did not, because of not consulting what is the true statement they easily published and let the public heard and read what the practitioner meant.

In my 16 years living in this world, I'd encounter so many things. We should respect others religion, aspects, cultures and even their doings. We should not forget that we are here in this world is to live in harmonious way. Regarding to the bombings, shootouts, and even ambushing it was MILF and MNLF doings but not all wanted to do that particular thing. We all know that mass media practitioners brings a great influence to the views of others, but it is not already right to take advantage their influence to put a mess in the image of Mindanao, especially to our Muslim brothers. Yes, there are some war happened in Mindanao, but that was still not enough for the Mindanao to be portrayed as a war zone. How about those good things that Mindanao have?
One of the biggest effect of this false views is the number of investments that are decreases because of the fear of investors in our place.
Though, some unpleasant happenings may occur in Mindanao, but let us not blame only the Muslims because Christians are also responsible for all of this.

“Mass media practitioners must be specific also in giving reports. When there is a bombing incident, journalists must dateline their stories where the events took place rather than just saying it was in Mindanao.”

This statement has a great point. Mass media practitioners are a lot interested in giving and making reports about Mindanao being aware that there’s a full blown war happening here. Yes, I do agree that there’s a certain war spread in Mindanao but it doesn’t mean the whole Mindanao is at chaos, is at war. Forging peace in the entire place is totally a hard thing to do. Lots of terrorists are based here. But what captures me is that reports made by mass media practitioners made the entire Mindanao a war zone, giving fear to other civilians, to our countrymen and of course to a lot of tourists.

I strongly agree that mass media practitioners could either make or break Mindanao with what and how they report events and activities, especially in something complicated like a peace process. So I’m quite thankful that Rufa Cagoco-Guiam related the do's and don'ts for non-Muslim mass media practitioners covering events and processes with the Muslims in Mindanao. He really made a point and I really do hope mass media practitioners would apply it.

In my views and opinions, I agree to the do's and don'ts for non-Muslim mass media practitioners covering events and processes with the Muslims in Mindanao. Mass media practitioners should know what they covering all about. Yes, they have rights to record and established an article for us to be informed about the happenings here in our country. But the problem is,mass media practitioners only features all the negative happenings especially when there is a war or conflicts, just like in Mindanao.
Some news we heard from the radio or we saw from the television are usually all about the happenings in the Mindanao. We heard that Mindanao is portrayed as a "war zone". Muslim kidnappers/bandits but never Christian kidnappers/bandits. And there is a full-blown “war” in Mindanao. For me, all these issues are not right to describe the place of Mindanao. They only featured the bad side of Mindanao. They made the whole Mindanao as a place of terrorist and bandits. Not all the people there are bad or criminals especially the Muslims, even Christians are not all innocent. Is it not fair to our fellow Muslims that they're always part of the negative issues. There is a possibility that they may affect their regimen, culture and traditions. And there are some criticism that can hurt their feelings and humanities.
To be frankly, mass media are good in delivering information. But the question is, do they also delivering good information? In this case in Mindanao,a big NO for me!. Why ? because they give an idea to the public that Mindanao is a "war zone" area. But, how about the beautiful image of it ? The tourist attractions and religious destinations of our beloved Muslims.
Therefore, mass media practitioners are not always right. We should make them realize that they are also a Filipino citizen. The people they featured are also their fellowmen and the place they covered are their country. What if their article or news they've made about Mindanao will spread to the other country. Is there any foreigner who wants to visit the Philippines ? or Is it more fun in the Philippines?.

  43. I strongly agree with the statement "Mass media practitioners should be sensitive to the faith and cultures of Muslims when covering events in Mindanao" because if they keep on giving bad news and bad informations about Mindanao, it might be the reason why the other tourist and investors will not have the courage to go here in Mindanao for the reason that they are scared.Media practitioners must give also the good side and positive side about Mindanao because we all know that Mindanao is not that bad. In my opinion about the text "MEDIA ETHICS AND CONFLICTS IN MINDANAO", we can't deny that our place is a dangerous because of the war that is happening between the soldiers and those groups who are against in the law of our government. But I strongly disagree with the idea of some people that there is a full-blown "war" in Mindanao.Because not all place in Mindanao was suffering from war. They need to specify the places on where did that thing happened, like in what place here in Mindanao.

I disagree with the text about the Muslim kidnappers/bandits but never Christian kidnappers/bandits.Even though I am Christian I understand the situation of our fellow especially Muslims. Not all the time those Muslim peoples are the one who is responsible with the war and bombing that is happening today.

After I read the article "Media Ethics and conflict in Mindanao" there are parts of it that I disagree and agree. I disagree in the statement "that there is a full blown war in Mindanao". Not all places or cities in Mindanao are involved in a war. Media practitioners must be more specific in giving places or giving a report.

I agree in the statement that Muslim kidnappers/bandits never in Christian kidnappers/bandits. Can you observe in national news they only report in Mindanao about war and etc. and usually the suspect or main subject are Muslims. If Muslims war-freak? In reporting there should be no discrimination specifically in religion. I also agree in the statement "Mass media practitioners must be aware of their critical and influential role". The people in the Philippines easily believe in what they heard or watch. So the mass media practitioner should be more careful in their reports because of their critical and influential role.

Continuing to earn it's reputation as the wild "west of the Philippines". And they should be more specific, carefully chosen words, and politically correct terms. Some muslims feel compelled to take more drastic action. Groups like Abu Sayyaf commit regrettable acts of violence, but these actions can hardly be dismissed as "pointless terrorism". I truly agree about this statement, Yes Mass media practitioners has a very big help in the society. They are our source of information about the different events that are happening in the society. They are also our source of knowledge about the different problems in the society. But somehow, Mass media practitioners are the source of rumors. News are also one of the reasons why people are fighting because of the wrong ideas or wrong news that has been reported.

For me, the Mass media practitioners should be fair. First of all Reporters should conduct a research or a survey about the certain topic/issues before spreading it to the public. They should be sensitive if what would be the person involved feel about their report.

Reports should be right and just. It's because majority of us believe about the news that has been reported. Many aspects are affected because of the wrong reports. As an example tourism and investments in Mindanao has been affected.

That's why Reporters here in Mindanao should be fair. They should also report facts and not rumors.

Mass media must be careful in broadcasting their report for there are viewers or listeners that they may misinterpret the news. Media practitioners have contributed a lot in terms of relaying information to the public . They are the ones who have the capacity to influence our impressions and views about a certain topic. That is why ,our media practitioners should be careful when encountering a sensitive issue ,for instance, Mindanao is viewed as a war zone in the Philippines ( an excerpt in the article "Media Ethics and Conflict in Mindanao"). I, as a college student disagree on this one because war is not rampant on all the places in Mindanao, there are specific places that are experiencing war during this time but not the entire island. Moreover, our media practitioners should not be one-sided only when delivering a news. "Terrorists, kidnappers, corrupt officials and all other undesirable characters in society are usually portrayed by the media practitioners to the image of Muslims in Southern Philippines" This is said to be incorrect because Muslims should not be portrayed as the ones who does all undesirable crimes. In addition to, I also disagree because there are a lot of people from different religions and cultures who are doing evil acts far more worse than Muslims.

Lastly, our media practitioners should religiously follow their code of ethics. They should remind themselves that in every independence, it should be coupled with responsibility.

I also agree with the phrase “ Must be extra careful when describing people who are suspects in crimes “ . You have no right in blaming others if you haven't any evidence that he is the suspect because it can really affect a people , who are innocent , to blame him the he was the suspect. Make it sure that he was really the suspect.

I agree that media should be extra careful on pointing out the suspects in a certain report. They should know every single detail about it because if not, they will report wrong information and that's what the audience would think. Like what's happening here in Mindanao, Just by saying the word, the people would automatically think that Mindanao is a warzone, and the people who causes this insurgency are the Muslims.

Let us consider the fact that some people are just pretending to be a Muslim and they are the ones that usually causes the insurgencies. Now let me ask you, would you kill a person without a big reason? No, right?

I disagree that Muslims are bad and for everybody's information, Muslims don't kill innocent people. They were just fighting for their rights which is the only problem that the gov't don't understand.

  74. I don't agree that the Mindanao is a warzone, because not all parts of Mindanao has insurgencies and not all Muslims are terrorists. It's just the media who gave them that label because their not being sensitive and specific to their reports and they're not practicing the do's and dont's for non-muslim medias when it comes to reporting.

Medias are very powerful they can report the opposite of what's really happening. So for me, they should really be careful and specific to their reports 'cause not all Muslims are bad.

  75. People and individuals have the right to acquire an objective picture of reality by means of accurate and comprehensive information as well as to express themselves freely through the various media of culture and communication.

I agree that mass media MUST be SPECIFIC in giving reports, because once they gave a broad or too general information, the person/s that heard the report will sometimes lead to misunderstanding and share it to others according to how they understand it. The issue will either be a new one or stay as it is. And it must be dateline the stories where the events took place rather than just saying it was in Mindanao.

I agree that the insights of the mass media practitioner had blocked both local and foreign investors to come in our place. It is simply because of what they heard over the radio, seen on television and even read on news papers/tabloids. The lesser the investors daring to come in our place it could greatly affect the economy in our place. We do have lots of tourist spots here; because of what they heard and read foreigners might get afraid, it could hardly affect the tourism of the place. The mass media practitioner should be sensitive more enough and be careful on what they were saying. Before relieving their ideas and opinions, mass media practitioner should know first the historical background of Mindanao conflict and the government’s policy in terms of peace negotiation. They should be extra careful in describing the suspect of the crimes. And i disagree about what they quoted about Mindanao is a "war zone". They should have checked the backgrounds of both religion, because not all Muslims or Christians are capable doing such vicious act.

]I know all of us now are aware to the happenings in our surroundings, right? It is not new also to us if we heard or say about bombings, shootouts, military ambushes, kidnapping incidents and failed ceasefires. But what comes into our mind if we heard those? Is it your answer is, it happened in Mindanao? Okay. Let’s tackle about this. As I read the whole article, I disagreed with the statement that Mindanao is portrayed as a war zone. It’s a BIG NO for us people living in Mindanao with that statement because it is not the island who possess those negative traits, it’s one of the cities there. I really hate those articles because Foreigners or even other countryman that Mindanao is one of dangerous place in the world but the truth is not. The fact is that Mindanao rich place and it is one of the Tourist spot here in the Philippines. If one of the cities in Mindanao is the place of the incident, so be with it reporters, don’t generalized the place, there is an exact place, time, person or location to that.
I strongly agree that mass media practitioners should be sensitive to view or tackle their reports about Muslims. It is because they are also persons like us, so bear with their sides. Not all crimes are their fault. Don’t use them as bad instruments to others. In other words, RESPECT THEM because not all of them are bad persons.

I agree that mass media practitioner's must be specific also in giving reports
for what they are doing because mass practitioner's media play a crucial role
in forging peace in covering events with the Muslims in Mindanao.
As a result, mass media practitioner's portrayal has prevented the investors
to step forward because they get scared by what they have read in the newspapers,
heard over the radio, and seen in the television because they've scared about there lives
    security.

    "Don't judge a book by it's cover"
This statement is what I want to say for all people who able to read those text about Muslims and my place Mindanao.
Media nowadays are been controlled. Some of their articles are certainly untrue and unjust. Their just creating a bad image for others.

I strongly agree with this article. On my stand, this article simply awakes those people who really don't have an idea of what the media is doing.

I agree on the statement that "Mass media practitioner's must be specific also in giving reports for what they are doing" because mass media had become an integral part of our lives and cannot be separated from our life. Small mistakes can change everything. We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities.

do aqree on the said statements and facts about mindanao conflicts, the media practitioners & the do's & don'ts in the articles that they make or publish. Muslim people need to be respected & should not be rejected in the society. the media practitioners job is to convey information & facts, not to create false articles. There maybe crime events that muslim people are involved but it doesn't mean that all of them should pay & be accused for it.We have different religion, yes, we have distinct beliefs & characteristics in our religion, but remember ,wheter muslim or christian ,as a whole deserves to be respected, accepted & reqarded in the society .

I disagree that Mindanao is portrayed as a war zone, the mass media practitioners must be careful to deliver their news, just know first all the real happenings before saying that Mindanao is the place were many crimes happened. In fact, many crimes happened not only in Mindanao but in a whole world. Mass media must investigate not only in terms of conflicts or chaos but the good information in Mindanao. We can't prevent war between MILF and the government because there are also MILF doing that or this, maybe because they take a revenge or this is the way to get their needs. Lastly, it is no right to say that Mindanao is portrayed as a war zone.

I beg to disagree that Mindanao is a full-blown "war" zone. Mass media practitioners must give even a little respect to our Muslim brothers/sisters. I said "RESPECT" because not all Muslims are like what is being described by other people or by the mass media practitioners. Majority of us, we considered that all Muslim are terrorists, which is a wrong perspective of the people. The mass media practitioners must know how to balance their reports. I mean, not just the bad news. I'm very confident that not only the bad things are in Mindanao; there is also a good side of this place. Look people, explore people, if you will see the beauty of Shangri-La, you will be amaze! Mass media practitioners must be sensitive of the feelings of others especially to our Muslim brothers/sisters. They must understand every situation of their reports. Not because it’s their job, but because it’s their responsibility to deliver to the viewers/listeners.
