How should one teach grammar?

Teaching GRAMMAR is not an easy task!
One should teach grammar through a communicative task , with incidental focus on form. A focus on form overtly draws students' attention to linguistic elements as they arise incidentally in lessons whose overriding focus is on meaning or communication (Long, 1991: 45-460). This can be done through error correction, noticing of salient forms in texts, and teacher- or student-initiated attention to a language feature. Schmidt in Ur (2010) explained that noticing is necessary for learning the grammar of a language. There is now ample evidence that many learners are capable of mastering a wide range of explicit grammar rules. Green and Hecht (1992), for example, found that university-level students of English in Germany were able to produce clear explanations for 85% of the grammatical errors they were asked to explain, while overall the learners in their study (who included secondary school students) managed satisfactory explanations for 46% of the errors.

Macrory and Stone (2000) reported that British comprehensive school students had a fairly good explicit understanding of the perfect tense in French (e.g., they understood its function, they knew that some verbs used avoir and some être, they were familiar with the forms required by different pronouns, and they were aware of the need for a final accent on the past participle). Hu (2002) found that adult Chinese learners of English demonstrated correct metalinguistic knowledge of prototypical rules of six English structures (e.g., for the definite article specific reference constituted the prototypical rule) but were less clear about the peripheral rules for these structures (e.g., generic reference). He went on that awareness of grammatical rules, forms and meanings may facilitate later acquisition. This can be realized through occasional lessons where learners’ attention is drawn to forms, often in the shape of an explicit rule. Communicative tasks can be done also through discussion of examples, and some intellectual effort. In a communicative task, one may teach bits of grammar / vocabulary / spelling before, during or after: but the focus is always on the communicative task. After giving the tasks, the teacher as suggested by Ellis (1996) should : first, teach those forms that differ from the learners’ first language (L1), and second, teach marked rather than unmarked forms.

Given all these grounds, I believe that communicative task is appropriate in teaching grammar to learners.

Which is better between implicit and explicit teaching of vocabulary?

Explicit teaching of vocabulary is better than implicit teaching. In explicit teaching of vocabulary, the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting whereas in implicit instruction, the instructor does not outline such goals or make such explanations overtly, but rather simply presents the information or problem to the student and allows the student to make their own conclusions and create their own conceptual structures and assimilate the information in the way that makes the most sense to them.

The claim that explicit teaching of vocabulary is better than implicit teaching is supported by a study conducted by Laurie Cutting and her team in Vanderbilt University, which found out that explicit teaching of vocabulary is effective than implicit teaching. The study examined 34 adult readers, from 21 to 36 years of age. The subjects were taught pseudowords—words that are similar to real words but that have no meaning, such as “skoat” or “chote.” Then, through both explicit and implicit instruction, subjects were taught meanings for these words. (In the study, both of these pseudowords were associated with the picture of a dog.)

The goal was to gain a clearer understanding of how people with different skills and capabilities processed short-term instruction, how effectively they learned, and how those differences looked physiologically in the brain.

In the end, the subjects were all able to learn the pseudowords. But, through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the researchers learned that something deeper was actually taking place: subjects previously identified as excellent readers showed little difference between how they processed explicit vs. implicit instruction. Average readers, on the other hand, showed through their fMRIs that they had to work harder to learn through implicit instruction; for them, explicit instruction was the more effective method.

With these claims, I believe learners would best learn vocabularies through explicit teaching.

  2. In teaching grammar to the students, the teacher must know first the capabilities of his/her students. For example, the teacher must evaluate the students' knowledge and skills in using the grammar appropriately. Grammar is an important factor for one's field of work. Learning grammar is not an easy task. Skills and a lot of understanding is what you need to learn and to master its rules, and to use it properly in communicating without causing any misunderstanding.
In my perspective, explicit teaching is way better than implicit teaching. It is because explicit teaching is useful for introducing topics and specific skills. It provides guided instruction in the basic understanding of required skills, which we can then build on through practice, collaboration, and hands on activities. In this way, we can understand more on how to use it in an adequate way and we would be able to share ideas. One thing to enhance our communication skills is not just to learn it, but to use and apply it on our day-to-day activities.

  3. The text conveys that grammar should be taught through explicit teaching. Explicit simply means 'fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated'. On the other hand implicit means, 'implied rather than expressly stated'. By definition, we would know which is the best way to teach grammar. A good instructor would know better to use an explicit way of teaching rather then implicit. A regular student would get faster what is being taught to him if the teacher would explain clearly the lessons.

Grammar isn't a simple lesson. it would take time to really master the proper usage of grammar. also it would take a good instructor to teach grammar. And a good instructor must have, not just good, but the best way of teaching. And in teaching such broad lesson, grammar, Explicit way of teaching is best prescribed. Students would really understand grammar better if all are clearly explained.

  4. In my own view a teacher must teach the students a proper grammar that he/she must understand or break it in specific topics or idea because when it comes to grammar a person must know much about it than learning on what only the things that are being said. Also in learning to it they are so many rules on how to use it to be fluent on the grammar that you will be dealing with unlike when you are just speaking to your friends that no proper grammar is needed. But in all of this it should be teach to others the proper grammar to be compatible in the world standard.
In my own view a teacher must use the explicit teaching so that a learner must expand his view to the topic to learn more on the specific meaning of it unlike when he/she is the one will search about it there are times that different meanings will appear just like the internet that's why a teacher must give a description about it to let the students have a reference to the topic and will not just get on whatever he will get but not sure about it if it will be related to the given topic.I know that students will expand when only the topic is given and they will search on their own but would it be put in mind that it can be a load to them if they will be the one to search about and accompany it in understanding because it's the first time that they encounter it but instead why not give it to students so hat if they can't understand it they can search on things related to it.

Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the most difficult aspects of language to teach well. But in teaching grammar having a good instructor would be a big factor for a student to learn especially in grammar, it is also a plus factor especially when he teaches it in a very fluent manner.

    Implicit or explicit?
It is wise not to base about methods. Every situation needs specific teaching practices depending on students needs, teaching goals, language points, number of students, level of students and other factors. But I agree what the author said that learners would best learn vocabularies through explicit teaching.

In this world, for you to be able to stand firmly, you should have first a great foundation. This foundation I'm referring to is how strong your feet are. This thing are done at school, on how you learn things. That's why the interaction between the students and the teacher are very much important. Students' thinking really depends on the teacher. It is because teacher molds the students. In teaching English, which is not easy, explicit way is needed. Teaching explicitly to students may may help them understand and learn things easily and clearly.

  7. Grammar is one of the most difficult aspects of language to teach well. But it is very important to us specially in English grammar for communicating properly and in other academic environment.

In learning grammar, we should know our skills and capabilities in order to us to gain clearer understanding. I agree that the best way in teaching is explicit rather than implicit teaching. It is because it offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures that every student can understood easily.Explicit orders are easy to carry out and the instructions are easy to follow.More, we can easily use it in our daily life. By this way, explicit is better than implicit.

Also, the instructor must be good at this, because he/she brings what we become.

Grammar is important in English teaching. It is also the key for you to be able to be confident enough to face the world. And I agree to the explicit teaching to the students because students may be able to understand the lesson well, clearly and easily. So, in general, explicit teaching is best prescribed.

All of us are required to follow certain rules and guidelines in the daily tasks of our lives, and the same goes for English. English has a wide range of sets of guidelines and rules that should be implemented, called grammar. From each word it is composed up to the very last punctuation mark, there is a certain syntax, formation and rules that should be followed.

Now the question is: "How should one teach grammar?", especially to engineering students.

Engineering students are students that practice their analytical thinking, their ability to analyze and solve problems precisely and efficiently. It is stated in the text that, in implicit teaching the instructor simply presents the information or problem to the students and allows the students to make their own conceptual structures and assimilate the information in the way that makes the most sense to them. Therefore, implicit teaching is more efficient than explicit teaching for this kind of students. It is a good way of training for them. In addition to this, after the instructor allowed the students to find their own way, he should still bring the light that will make the path clearer and brighter for the students to go on. The instructor should further discuss and clarify the conclusions of the students so that an interactive learning between the two may be established.

Grammar should be prioritized by educators because it is the soul of the language. Skills and a lot of understanding is what you need to learn and to master its rules, and to use it properly in communicating without causing any misunderstanding.

In this way, we can understand more on how to use it in an adequate way and we would be able to share ideas. We must share ideas in a correct grammar so that other people will interpret it as what you would like to express to them.

  11. Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of the English language. It is also the most difficult aspect of teaching language. I agree with the author that says explicit teaching is more effective than implicit teaching. Implicit is implemented by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. This results in bored, disaffected students who can produce correct forms on exercises and tests, but consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context. Thus, result to ineffective communicative skills.

Explicit teaching, on the other hand gives the students the opportunity to appreciate grammar and what they are learning it for. Learning grammar is a complex and challenging activity for many students, which is why explicit teaching focus more on the grammatical concepts that are essential for clear communication, plus a clear outline of its uses and importance. The effectiveness of a teaching method may also vary on the students, but based on what was mentioned (Research in Vanderbilt University), explicit teaching clearly is more effective on most of us.

  12. In my own understanding. Grammar is part of our daily lives because without that we cannot understand each others conversation or the speakers. Grammar also is one of the central teaching and learning of language . Language teachers adopt for us to focus what the grammar is and they also taught us and explain that to us. Some people or students don't know how to use a grammar and consistently make errors when they try to use it in context, but it's okay because it's not necessary that all of us are good in grammar we just have to try our best to make it and everybody deserves to learned and to be learned.
We should practice more and more so that we could know already how to use and speak it clearly to everybody.

  13. Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach well. The teacher must teach grammar by explaining the students the forms and the rules which are simple and which do not have exception, and also don’t spend too much time on grammar points which do not appear to be very useful or important. Just make the students aware of the special feature. Wherever possible, teach grammar in context. "Explicit teaching is better than implicit teaching"

Mention the word “grammar” and students will cringe. In fact, most teachers will cringe, too. Of course, teachers know correct grammar rules, but it's one thing to know them, and another thing to effectively teach them, and transmit them so that students not only understand the rules, but also apply them correctly.
For me, grammar shouldn’t be taught “by the book”. That’s not what students are there for. We don't want to know all of these rules; we're not interested in them. We want to learn English. We want to speak, read, and write in English.

So,what's the endpoint of what I am saying? The endpoint is that, explicit teaching is the key to teach grammar, since it can let the students learn and discover for themselves about the topic. Thus,if we discovered it, it means that we understood the topic thoroughly and knowledgeably.

Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. So, proper teaching of it must be done.

I agree to what the text stated that in teaching we better know the capacities of the students , if you are a teacher you should teach a student with their capacities and slowly enhance their grammars to the fullest of their limitation , by this way , student will build knowledge about grammars , and also , it will be easy to them to communicate with others without worrying about their wrong grammars .
By this way student can know better about grammars . The teachers also watch their grammars because sometimes , the wrong grammars of the teacher will make them think that their wrong grammars are right .
in this way , many people will enhance their grammars and also by this way the every people will improve in using grammar.

that's all and thank you :")

  16. On the article above, in teaching English grammars to the learners, the teachers must aim at making them efficient users of the language and proper grammar first before applying or spreading their knowledge to the students. To have a good result, the two main characters must have the word "cooperation". The teachers must teach the students very well, and for the students, they must listen and follow what their teacher will teach them. For me, there could be some ways on how a teacher should teach grammar well.

First, the teachers might start with rules and definitions of the main topics regarding grammar and proceeds to applying these to particular examples (for the students to merely understand their main uses) and also clarify some hidden ideas and implications of the formula and rules on which the students might be confused of.

Next, Explanations of how things work are often useful too. By just explaining on why does those things work and on to why does that necessary for that and etc, the students might now have a good idea regarding on what you are teaching.

Last (for me), but not the least, a teacher might also use supplemental books, books with exercises regarding proper usage of grammar. These technique could probably be a good way too to teach grammars to the students.

    Thats all :)

Grammar, one of the important elements in whole language, every language has its own grammar and own structures. Grammar is one of the hardest part of english subject, it shows on how we put our sentence correctly and without errors.

How should a professor teach grammar to the students ?
Teaching grammar on that subject is not a easy task, no matter if it is a minor subject, but still it is important to learn and to know what it is all about especially to the engineering students. Some professors uses vocabularies in order for us to really understand what it is, just like explicit vocabulary which is better than other points of vocabulary, because it clearly emphasizes the topic in order to evaluate and to draw conclusions and making some point in understanding grammar. There are some uses other unique vocabularies in order to gain more and to understand more.
Lastly, unique style of delivering some points in grammar with originality will make some students more accurate with fun and lessons to make our grammar well delivered.

  18. Grammar is very important. Not just for the students but also to others. Grammar is the central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach well.
Language teachers who adopt this definition focus on grammar as a set of forms and rules. They teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. This results in bored, disaffected students who can produce correct forms on exercises and tests, but consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context. That's why teaching grammar is not an easy task.
The communicative competence model balances these extremes. The model recognizes that overt grammar instructionj helps students acquire the language more efficiently, but it incorporates grammar teaching and learning into the larger context of teaching students to use the language. Instructors using this model teach students the grammar they need to know to accomplish defined communication task.
Explicit teaching of vocabulary is very important to all the learners so that the learners can understand well and gain more knowledge out of this.

Grammar is one of the most important topic in English. It makes our communication easier to understand. But, it is difficult to understand because most of us students have difficulties in the proper usage of grammar.

A teacher must make his/her creative way of teaching grammar in-order for the students could somehow understand and learn well. Yes,it is difficult to teach grammar, but it is needed to make our speaking and writing skills much better.

So, I would prefer explicit way of teaching. It is because it would make things easier to understand. As the author stated in the article, in explicit teaching of vocabulary, the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting. This will make lessons easier to learn.

  20. Grammar is very important to our day to day living. Especially by means of communication. It is also a effective way for the teachers to communicate to there students.

Teaching grammar having nice teachers who uses unique techniques that makes the students feel like good and tend to be feel not boring would be very effective to the students to learn easily in grammar. Because grammar is a very hard subject, because you to be good in english so that by the time you use it in communicating you know that you are using using it well.
