Language and Power

“ Basurero ra mana siya. Nganu mutuman man ka niya?”

“ Yes, mayor. We will obey your policy.”

These are just few of the lines that I found answers after reading the article entitled Echoes of Power: Language Effects and Power Differences in Social Interaction by Cristian Mizil, Lilian Lee, Bo Pang, and Jon Kleinberg of Cornell University, which was published in France last April 2012. The article examined the power differences and linguistic style on conversations among wiki editors or open-source teams regarding modifications; debates within conference program committees on which papers to accept; and discussions in legal hearings, where opposing sides compete to persuade a judge or jury.

One of the findings of the study is that people coordinate more with interlocutors who have higher power than with those who have lower power. This answers to the statements I brought up. You do not automatically believe on the statements of a garbage man because he belongs to the lower stratum in the society, whereas you will listen and interact well to the mayor because he is in the position which means he has the power. We converse, and obey the person who has higher power, and use polite words. I can relate this scenario to the Tausugs who are fighting for their rights over Sabah though President Aquino beg Sultan Jamalul Kiram III to advise his army not to pursue their activity in Lahad Datu , Sabah. Yes, the President of the Republic of the Philippines is the most powerful man in the country but this is not observed among Tausugs. For the Tausugs, it is the Sultan who is the most powerful. “ Why should we obey the President? He is a Christian, not a Muslim in short.” For the Tausugs, they will believe more on their fellow Muslims. Yes, the Tausugs are brave, and our history can attest to that. The Tausugs and the rest of the Muslims in the country were not colonized by the Spaniards, Japanese, and Americans because these Muslims believe that they ( the invaders) were not Muslims so why should the Muslims obey these foreigners?. This is implanted in the hearts of the Muslims, that is why until this time, they are still fighting for the Bangsamoro homeland. Yes, it is not easy to attain this aim as what the imam ( priest) preached yesterday in the salatul Jum-ah (Friday prayer) at Trading Boulevard, Davao City. The imam is right that we can still attain the Bangsamoro homeland in our own home and in our hearts in general. These Muslims will believe on their fellow Muslims such as the imam and the Sultan than the President of the Republic of the Philippines. This is the very reason why the government cannot control the Tausug army.

Even in our barangay, the Tausugs do not recognize the barangay captain whenever there is conflict in our place. The Tausugs will deal the matter in the presence of the religious leader such as the panglima, and not the barangay captain who is a Christian. The Tausugs have this ego that why should we ask a Christian to solve the matter? The Tausugs do not coordinate with the barangay local officials.

Indeed, power plays an important role in social interaction as evident in the situations in Sabah and in our community. Language coordination has a relationship to power.

according to the article is that people only do respect the highest and disregard the nobody's.people like we citizens who are disrespecting who is under his position or status.A good example of power is here in our home,a family is an example of a crew, team or etc.you can see the greatest power from a father and the lowest is from the last sibling.the elder brother/sister would lead the younger sibling but never listens to his/her sibling but rather listens to his/her father o mother for commands.

  6. The article infers that we who dwells under ones leadership strongly practice to obey and respect that particular person in his high position. For instances, such as the situation between the president and his subordinates, the boss and his employees. This is the fact that cannot be denied, it had been our practiced since long way before.Along our history laid the stories that regards to the situation like this.It was the language that plays very important role in our society, for it was said that "language is the soul of our country" ,it is our identity.Language may be the basis of ones position in the community (e.g captain, councilors). We who are under there leadership tends to take charge of adjusting ourselves in order to adopt to them.

We personally experience the language and power situations. For instance , the situation between the Mayor and the people around in a community, we obey what the mayor commands because for us he has the POWER and a LANGUAGE to be followed. We usually neglect the commands of nobody because for us they don't have right to dictate us because they don't have any power nor language.

Based on the article that the people coordinate more with interlocutors who have higher power than with those who have lower power.Example of this is the landlord between the slaves, those people would only work for their boss and for those people who only work as a slave are those people that haven't finish their studies ,they always follow the commands of their landlord and in the higher power is being a commander because they paid for their salary .Therefore, power is gained with education to learn through language , which in turn can shape a person's identity. The importance of learning language is simple. People should learn language so that no force in the world can change their identity because their power will increase do to their knowledge. Ultimately, language power and identity are correlated.

Base on the article, the people only obey and give respects to those people who are in the high position and I agree on that. Because for me it has been part of our tradition just like for an example in a room which is composed of a Teacher, the class mayor and the members, there were few of the members will obey and respect the mayor because for them their mayor is still like them students so they must prefer to obey their teacher. In our society, we have a lot of situations like this. But there are some also that has no option but to obey those people in the higher position because they are afraid of what will be the consequences behind it. Language is a way in communicating but power will have a big impact in terms of socializing.

It is argue that language as means of social interaction constitutes a powerful medium for the construction and transmission of culture. Although at a superficial level the ideas and meanings contained in ordinary words. There are many legitimate authorities in a persons life from their parents, to teachers at school and even spiritual leaders. Most of these authorities figures that have been named are given their authority by the society. We just to told to follow that they tell you to do. In the other word we obedient to these people. Every person at some time in their life has followed a superior without questioning why they are doing. For example we never question why we take test in school. We just take them because we are told to do so. we never question a lot of the rules that people say in are best interest because they are usually told to us by someone that is a position higher than we are at.

  11. In the world of Language,we can say that it is related to power. Why?Because based on the article, people tend to obey the orders from the people who have a higher position or rank because they have the POWER.For me,its true because in my situation,I always obey the command of my family, teachers, older people etc.In that situation, the family, teachers, older people has the Power. From the article, the basurero was neglected by someone because that person believed that he/she has a higher rank than the basurero.Another example is when you join an organization. You,as a newbie tend to follow the orders of the officers because they have the authority to expel you to the group.Power plays a great deal in terms of communicating and socializing. If we know that that person is higher than you,you will follow her or his obey without knowing the reason why.

I can relate this scenario when I was a child.
I'm more willing to listen and obey my mother than a stranger, of course why would I listen in a stranger? Even if that stranger is the Captain in our barangay but I don't know him as much as I know my Mom. She's related to me and she's my family. Though our barangay captain is a powerful person but we don't have a relationship and connection to each other. So for me my mother is more powerful than anybody else because she's my family. Her words are more powerful. The use of language for control purposes is simultaneously a reflection of existing power relationships.

But in our barangay, the people there were not obeying what the mayor said “stop throwing garbage”. He kept on reminding us. Because language is a method of communication in our culture, the fuel we use to empower our desires, and to direct and align our energy. We must obey on what leaders say to us, because leader knows best for us. Our mother or father is the example of a good leader.

Power is associated with wealth, education and as well as language. Indeed it is true that people only recognized and obeyed those people who were in the position. For those who don’t, the tendency of disregarding is always in the first slot of options. Consider this example: If someone says that a certain equation you have is wrong, would you believe it in instant? Of course not, if there are uncertainties you want to figure it out for yourself. Now, if your teacher in Mathematics says the same, why would you believe it in instant? It is because he/she is in the position. That thing is her/his field of study. Power is associated with language in the sense that we can able to detect whether that particular person had a proper education or not. People tend to believe to those people who were good in speaking. Language is a pre-determined of power.

Base on the article, the people obey and pay respect to those people that are powerful or high in position especially to those people that have enough knowledge in life ,yes i do agree. the best example i can give to the relationship between LANGUAGE and POWER is in our classroom, why? because the TEACHER is the most POWERFUL individual in the room,he/she has the LANGUAGE and POWER to command and RULE the class. Also, we are
trained from a young age into showing respect for our teacher, letting
    them control the
interaction, and answering their questions as long as we can. If
we meet our teacher in a different
setting example at a social gathering, then we should intera
ct with them as a teacher-student,to maintain the respect to the teacher. When considering ‘language & power’ one needs to distinguish public power vs
    . personal
    power.

  17. Reality check ! Whether we like it or not, Language is really related to power. People tend to Follow the words of a person with a position because the words of that person are authorized and we are afraid to be punished if we do not obey and it is very unfair to the person with no position just like the Basorero. Though we are a democratic country, we cannot deny the fact that we value more the words of an authorized persons.

I can relate to this article between me and my parents,
because I need to obey them even though their commands are annoying over and over again and I need to respect them means of my parents has the power to give a command to me but sometimes I cant obey them by those some of my reasons that I'm tired, and through that my parents understand me.Language is exercising a power to a person that how he will deliver his words so that people will obey him/er.Language is about culture because some of us cannot understand each other because of different languages of culture but as I said that language is just exercising a power to a person through his/er position and religion.

After reading the article, it made me think about the difference between superiority and inferiority.Individuals of high positions are given much respect and authority compared to those who are of low status thinking that they are powerless and inferior which I think needs to be treated fairly speaking of good values. My reason is that,we become immoral if we are going to underestimate people belonging to lower stratum in the society. However, individuals of high positions are worthy to be respected by their constituents and I don't argue with it.They are to be respected and to be followed.Comparing this to language and power relationship,I can say that language is very necessary in pursuing power.A person who knows well about the correct usage of language obtains power and in the same way, a person who has the power needs to be expert in using the correct language as well.

Look at what you've got and make the BEST of it. It is better to light a candle than to curse the DARKNESS.

Obeying the rule of the society is our responsibility. As I read the article I found out that each individual must have their own perspective of what they will follow. If the government will impose a rule, they must emulate it because they/we are under democratic leadership. But before following the rule we need first to think if it has advantage to us; if none, we need to speak out our thoughts. On the other hand, as a Muslim person we have also our own rule in our community. We have a problems that the government cannot solve, but I am not saying that we will not follow the rules of the government. We just want RESPECT coming from other people who belongs to other religion. Because based from my experiences there's really a discrimination in religion, and to banish those discrimination RESPECT is the only answer.

based on my own opinion, by obeying the man who are in authority is the only way to have a better community or relationship. for example to our parents, if we obey all of his command our parents will not get angry with us, because by obeying them they are pleased and happy. like what they are expecting to us in our studies they want us to get a higher or better grades. but before we coup it up we must study harder and struggle all the hardship that we encounter until we are in a successful life. Even in our city today, we must obey of what our city mayor is commanding to us. For me Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the most powerful mayor all over the country, why?? because our city has the most standard policies, He has the power to ruled the city, because he have proved us how he can handle it, by protecting our city from criminals. but most of all we cannot do all of it for not trusting our most high GOD our heavenly father.

In this article, I can say that the power of one person really has the a impact to people.Once a person has a high position in a society, in a group or in any places,he/she can really control his/her companions. People who has greater power gains more respect in a society since they are the one who leads the people and they are more expected to do such things that are needed to be order .
But with this text, we, as individual should be responsible enough of doing such thing. But we must not just obey the rules of those who are in higher positions immediately. We must first think if that rules are for our good or not.

So in relation to my experience, there are a time when had a Children Celebration in our church. In that time we had form a groupings so that our activity will be in order. So me, as a member in our group,I really obey and listen to what our team leader has said us. I obey and respect her decisions since I know that he knows whats the best for our group. They had a mayor , vice mayor , etc. The one who manage the jail was what they called warden. But as I observe the things inside the jail, I was shocked because an officer inside the jail punished his member because they said he stole the clothes of his inmate. "But why they don`t listen to the explanation of their inmate?, I asked." I can`t explain what I felt that time hearing the man saying " Pasaylua ko ". The mayor of the cell got pity to his inmate but the warden ordered to do it because for him that`s how he disciplined the prisoners.
This shows that a person really obey the one who has the higher power that`s why the poor prisoner cannot express what he wanted so say.

After I read the text, it is true that language and power is related to each other because if you have the power in the society then your commands/language is highly respected and everyone will follow you.

And base on my experiences about this topic is when I was at the airport there's a passenger who is complaining that he is not being entertained so the guard talk to him but the costumer is not listening to the guard. He want the manager to talk to him and when the time the he talked to the manager he just calmed down, so it means that because the guard has the lower power the costumer did not talk to him, and when the manager talk he just calm down. So it means if you have the power everyone will follow as what you says or your language is respected by everyone.

Based also on the article that i have read, people in this society gives respect only to those in a higher position who has the power and to those people who are wealthy and known. For example the situation between the officer, aspirants and cadets in our ROTC.When an officer gives a command to cadets they quickly execute it because senior officers might lessen their merits but when aspirants gives a command, they did not follow it like the way they follow the senior officers .And so,this only means that if you have the position you have the power which accompanied by language.

-The common aspect in the community that portrays about the abrupt command of a HIGHLY POWERED citizen and a GARBAGE MAN, has its very wide gap to be considered. For we all believe that these people that are in the "position" has its capability of leading the society into better ways. While these people that are only among of those who does not have any "position"- it is very hard for us to follow and consider its simple command.

-Just like my experience when I was in high school, I only ignore those student school officers that are assigned to warn those students who are not wearing their uniforms. I was warned a several times by those students but still I did not have any concern to follow. Comes the time that our Supreme Student Government ADVISER came and told me to wear my proper uniform, I was obliged to do so.

-It just proves that LANGUAGE without an authority, is NOTHING like a trash thrown in a GARBAGE CAN.

"Language and power", this article is all about conversational matter who have higher power than with those who have lower power.
Example of this scenario is about Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's shoot to kill order , the police will follow the order of Mayor Duterte's shoot to kill, whenever they encounter a very critical situation like hostage drama and a suspect will fight back to the police, they will follow the order of the Mayor shoot to kill for survival.

Language if define lexically, is the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting the use of words in a structured and conventional way but language can also be define as how you can vividly convey your thoughts to others in a way that they can cope and comprehend with you. As for power it IS lexically defined as the ability to do something and act in particular way but for me power is something you already have but you have to harness its full capacity for you to be able to use it properly. There are situations which show us the relations between language and power. For example, when students courteously ask questions regarding the lesson the teacher is discussing, but instead of answering the students, the teacher took the questioning into some sort of public humiliation and impulsively told the students that they don't have the right to question her for she is a teacher and we're just mere students. We understand that she has already achieved a professional degree but we students also have the right to asks her something we didn't understand. We are created equally by God and thus we should listen, respect and be open-minded about whatever ideas and questions everyone has. We should also be carefully of how we use the language and power entrusted to us for language and power is a powerful weapon if properly used.

The article "Language and Power" is like a relationship between a parents and their children . Wherein , the parents where the one who have a power to regulate and discipline their children . While the children dont have a right\power to be followed by their parents . It means , the one who have a power between a relationship will be obeyed by the one who were under their responsibilities .

I'm a big fan of the sport volleyball . I observed that language and power plays a role in every game that they play . For instance , when a player suggested some moves that she thinks that would help their cost . Unfortunately their head coach didn't approved her suggestion and gave other instruction . After that time out they executed the play that there head coach told them even if the suggestion of their team mate was good and maybe helped there cost . This scenario that i sighted only showed that even though a person has a good suggestion but when his/her suggestion was opposed by a person with a higher position the people around them will follow the suggestion of the person in position . In short , if your in a higher position your language will definitely be powerful .
That's why language and power are related .

I agree that power and language is related to each other, and it is true that people coordinate more with interlocutors who have higher power than with those who have lower powers.
Based on my experience,I obey the Head Officer in our church organization. She has the power to take a lead on us in what we are going to do, even if she will command us to do the other activities or help them to organize when there is an upcoming event. Language is useful in this kind of situation, we respect and use polite words to them. And for those who belongs to the lower position, we must also show that we respect them.

My experience about language and power is when I was in 3rd year high school. I was once a member of the band majorettes in our school. We were divided into two, there are groups for dancers and group for musical and I belong to the dancer’s group. Over all there is a head majorette, the leader, that we follow and there are also assistants. The head majorette plays the most important role in the team because he or she is the one that leads us to come up with a best performance. The head majorette also has the power or authority to order us around and give us punishments in order for us to be disciplined. During the performance there is also what we called “band languages” that communicates us with another as a team to be more effective and competent. I've observed that power when not used properly is distractive and lead in abusing others like one of my fellow band member, the assistant; because he/she commands something to us that even the head majorette didn't command it. He or she uses his or her power incorrectly because his or her job is only to assist the head majorette not to become the head majorette. Both power and language are important to every one of us and we can encounter it in every field we will be assigned in our life. May power and language use correctly in order to have a better and productive work.

  48. As we observe in our community if a person belongs to a higher power, they are respected by the community or they don't want to mingle with the lower power in the society maybe for them they don't what to step down on the level of them. (vice versa, the lower power will do the same thing but in other reason)

According to the article entitled "Echoes of Power: Language Effects and Power Differences in Social Interaction", that language coordination in text content alone can serve as a rich source of information about power differences within a group. To be able to speak in a principled way about power differences, the framework of exchange theory from sociology stated that a power difference between x and y can be based on the fact that x has a higher status than y. Another one is if y needs something from x, and hence is dependent on x, this can give x a form of at least temporary power over y. In general, people with low power exhibit greater language coordination than people with higher power. For example, a man who didn't went to school or studied in school meets a group of professionals in a barangay meeting conducted yearly. Two things are expected to happen. The first one is the group of professionals will mingle to the uneducated man and the second one is the group of professionals will never recognize the man just because of its status in life. Just like in the article above tackles about what the Mayor said to its member who undoubtedly agreed upon what the Mayor said don't make any conceptions about the basusero its because of the position of the Mayor in the community the rest will follow the instruction. One of the finding in the study is conversely, people coordinate more with interlocutors who have higher power than those who have lower power. But what if a person undergoes changes in status? The behavior changes, and so does the behavior of people talking to them. The interaction between themselves are generally taking place in natural language both in speaking and in writing.

Based on my experience, when I was in high school I was put in the first section class coming from the general section. Discrimination, stereotype and criticism all of those forms I have encountered. Since I was raise up and train at home on how to respect other. The only principle that I'm remembering always is how others see you in not important but how you see yourself means everything. By that principle and of course with the aid of our Father, I was able to survive all of those dark sides that I've encountered.

In addition, the power differentials between the individual perspective of living immediately echoes in the person that the are referring or responding to. To eliminate the discrimination between themselves respect is word to be replace with discrimination.

  49. In our society, injustice is very rampant nowadays. That is currently happened in our community. Just like getting the desired justice. The battle between rich and poor is unfair. Because, those people who have lots of money or high level persons are mostly get in favored of than those who are in low level. This just means that the one one who is powerful and influential is the one who gets more respect.

  50. This article is a big true. The people only obey and give respect to those people who are in a high position than in a lower position. yes! it is true. There are some instances happen in life that i can say that there's a relationship between language and power. And this is still exist nowadays.
Base on my experiences, when i was a kid my elder sister used to command me, like mom. She command anything and everthing. I got really irratted and i'd just once ignore her, and skip her commands. But when my mother heard about it, my mom again told me to do so. I think this is still happening. Not just with me but to everyone.
We can't deny the fact that this really happen in our society. But we should be humble and we should not use our position to underestimate others.

Based in my observation if a person was in a higher position he|she could be a powerful.Like in PNP the general has the highest position in them,so whatever he commanded on his fellow police they must to followed him.The relationship between the language and power is,if you know how to get the trust of the crowd then you had already the power to manage them .Language can be your power and your power is your language.

In my own experience. To convince someone needs enough power.
In my case, I'm just a student. If i tell everyone that there will be no class for today, they will tend to question me. But if a teacher will do that, they will surely believe on what he/she say.

The power of language not only means language in the service of power; language can also undermine power. And above all, as language, it possesses itself power of a very special kind. The relation of language and power is ambivalent. Language operates in social interactions is its relationship with power, both influential and instrumental. Neither rule nor law, neither discipline nor hierarchy sanctions influential power.

Language and power is a social status wherein the powerful is given much more respect compared to the other.

There was this certain situation in my life where i can relate language and power to. In grade school, when i was still in a part of the band. The certain trainer had complained of her salary not being enough so she had discreetly worked, also as a trainer, for our rival school. I'd proudly mention that we hit the grand slam when i was in the third grade. Not to mention the number of awards and prizes taken as well.

By then, our trainer made as attend to practices and events with other schools without our adviser's consent.

Before she knew it, our adviser discovered what our trainer was doing and has taken it as an act of betrayal that created a conflict between them and complicated everything.

Language and power occured in such situation because we took the words of our trainer more than our adviser's for she was the one whom we looked up to when it comes to playing the instruments.
