The text highlights the communicative task as a way on teaching grammar. When a student enters an engineering class, there comes an expectation within him that his college life will be revolving around sciences and mathematics, to the point that he can truly consider the "quite-distant" subjects as major ones. The English subject is one of them. But in this generation, being knowledgeable in English grammar is an advantage that one can hold for his career. And of course, it will start in the English class - between the English professor and the student. But to prevent the intervention of factors like the one said earlier, it is on the professor to think on how to draw the student's attention to linguistic elements. And it doesn't simply stop on that. Teaching through noticing (error corrections, awareness of grammatical rules, giving out examples, etc.) can make a difference from just being a for-the-sake kind of learning.

Explicit teaching is a way better than implicit teaching. Implicit teaching simply presents an information to a student to make his own conclusions and digest it through his own concepts. The tendency is that his learning will only depend on how he understood the information, which might lead to misinterpretations. But in explicit teaching, the professor digs within the information, allowing the students to clearly know why he needs those informations and certain explanations about a topic.

The author of the context is more concern about the best strategies to conduct in order for the students to learn as well as to enjoy also the subject and the activity. Communicative strategy is a good alternative in teaching grammar, it is also effective in drawing student's attention through the grammatical errors and make their own conclusions out of their own understanding. When a student encounters grammar-correcting difficulties, to communicate is the best way to achieve improvement in their communicative skills. It is also an easier way to let the students absorb the knowledge without aching their fingers and hands in taking such notes.

As what the author stated, explicit teaching is more effective than implicit. Explicit teaching is more on clear understanding of the topic and generally, more "well-explained" than the implicit. It deals with the organization of the ideas of a certain topic and is logically explained and shown by the professor. It involves the activities to be conducted throughout the subject and the student's free will in the learning process. In this teaching alternative, the students were enabled to think to make conclusions and process their own views on the topic where it establishes student's self-esteem and improves learning capability more effectively than implicit teaching, avoiding the tendency of misunderstanding the main topic which may lead to further confusions.

I believe professors who does explicit teaching use the best way for students to learn English. Filipinos as we are, we aren’t adopted to speaking English all the time. Therefore it’s harder for us to learn English than those in other countries stated in the article who studied grammar of their own language. It's a double effort for us. However, I’m not saying implicit teaching is no help at all. I think it will be good from time to time. Implicitly teaching students will arouse their critical thinking and inherent knowledge in English. It’s just that I discourage it because it will be brain wracking and heart breaking if a student like me will get into the dead end and fall into the Milky Way therefore not getting any answers.

English is also very natural for wide readers. One effective way to let students learn is by encouraging them to read all sorts of books. Personally, when I encounter words and sentence structures a lot, it gets easier for me to use and say it. After all, if one doesn’t have the heart to study English, then teaching one will be worthless.

  4. Our country's own language, which is the Filipino, is the language that we are used to. We, as Filipinos, grew up knowing the right grammars and right ways of using it. But its not just our own language that is introduced to us. As we enter school, we encounter the English language that is the international language. This may be hard for us to learn especially during the time that we were just starting to learn this language. With the help of people teaching this language, learning it seems to be easier.

We may learn something by ourselves, but life would be easier with someone helping us to learn. Through them we could learn. And for them also to teach in a way that it wouldn't be hard for them, explicit teaching is an effective one. After all the learning would just depend on the one studying. It's the eagerness to learn that makes learning be fruitful.

Learning, I believe, is done in different ways. There are times where one encounters certain things uncommon to him and has to learn it with his own understanding of what it truly means. There are also other instances where one encounters things uncommon to him but is able to understand through explanations given by others. This is the same with teaching. The former one is the implicit way of teaching while the latter one is the explicit way of teaching. And if there comes a time that I have to answer a question like "How does one teach grammar?", I might say that it will be the explicit teaching.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 'implicit' means that things are understood though not directly expressed while 'explicit' means that things are clearly expressed. From the definitions themselves, explicit teaching is more suitable in teaching grammar mainly because English grammar is very different from the native language grammar we use. There are terms and styles in our vernacular language that we can easily express but there are many lessons concerning English grammar which need explanations first before one can truly understand it.

I can support my idea with the result of the study on teaching pseudowords. Let us say that the pseudowords taught (associated with a picture of a dog) are grammar lessons in which students are not yet familiar with. In implicit teaching, the teacher will just say that "If you see something like this, it's a skoat". But with explicit teaching, the teacher will say that "If you see something like this, it's a skoat. It looks like a dog. A skoat is an animal that is...". Can you tell the difference? The implicit teaching is also good in a way that it promotes students to critically think and express his own understanding through his own words. But there are problems that might arise like what if the student was successful to come up with his understanding of the lesson but that understanding of his failed to coincide with what the lesson is all about?

That's where explicit teaching is more effective. It allows the students to come up first with his understanding, then the teacher explains the lesson and presents the skills and information structures need and then student applies the clear outlines given by the teacher to relate his ideas with what the lesson really is and corrects the "loopholes" of his preliminary understanding. That way, the student will really be able to learn the lesson.

This is how one should teach grammar.

Grammar isn't an easy topic to discuss to all students especially if students are sick and not even interested with the topic at all. As for the author, it was according to him that communicative task is one great way of teaching grammar. This maybe becomes more effective because students' attention are drawn more into these kind of types that can be a great advantage to learn fast.

Explicit teaching on the other hand becomes easier compared with implicit teaching because implicit teaching is more complicated and more complex. Students would rely more based on their understanding which on the first place might be or might not be standard or right.

On the other hand, for me, it depends thoroughly to the students being taught with the topic because there are some that no matter how interesting the topic and the mode of introduction are, when they are not interested, they really wouldn't care about the topic at all. However, i'm not saying that instructors should not develop ways to make grammar more effective. It is still important of course to make it interesting so that students would still draw attention into it whether less or great.

Teaching the English subject is confusing and needs a lot of understanding. Like Math, you need to find the solution to grammatical problems and like Science, it enables you to discover many things.

I think learning English and teaching English are two difficult tasks. In order for the students to learn, a teacher must deliver his lessons in an effective manner for the students to be able to absorb all of the lessons, retain all of it, and also be able to apply it. A teacher must be able to distinguish a learning method that suits him and all of his students. A teacher must also consider the students' background in English, their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to grammar and their learning capacity.

I prefer explicit teaching over implicit teaching, because as we all know not all students are equal in terms of their mental prowess. Other students can easily understand a certain topic by just giving them clues and some examples involving the subject, while others cannot and needs a full explanation about the topic.

In my own perspective an English teacher should know his students first and develop a teaching strategy that will benefit him and his students.

Teaching grammar have many different ways, it all depends on how will you teach it. Students may learn grammar by their selves but we can gain more knowledge and learn more by the help of our teachers, that's why life would be easier if there is someone who could help us to understand more.

The text tells us that explicit way of teaching is better than implicit way of teaching. For me I agree, why? because in explicit teaching the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students or in the other words the instructor expresses it more clearly for the students to learn more. while for the implicit teaching the instructor does not outline such goals for the students or not directly expressed. So that is why i agree that explicit is more effective way of teaching than implicit way.

  10. English is not our primary language. Learning this language may be difficult for some of us because this is not the language that we grew with. We are used in speaking vernacular in our day-to-day life, thus we only use English when necessary, during class, or when forced to. Learning English is as hard as teaching it. But through different strategies and methods, it became easier.

How should one teach grammar? There may be a lot of strategies and ways in teaching. But let's admit it, not all of them are effective. From what i've read I find the explicit teaching better than the implicit teaching. Each of us has our own learning habits. But since we are talking about grammar and language, it would be best to actually speak and practice the language, in order to learn it well.

The most effective way for a professor to teach engineering students would be to know what the students are capable of understanding. Every student has their own vocabularies and grammars that some may also have, and some may not have those.

The professor should first try to put themselves in our shoes. Would we understand the grammar? Is it explained enough for the students to understand and digest the information ? They should look through the students' perspective on the teaching system.

For me, explicit teaching is more effective than implicit teaching. In implicit teaching the instructor presents the information and allows the student to make their own conclusions while in explicit teaching the instructor clearly explains the skills and information.

While for excellent readers, the two forms have little difference, for the average readers or most of the engineering students would be more effective in learning using explicit teaching.

The text give emphasis on how one should teach grammar and communicative task as a way of teaching grammar. Learning grammar is not an easy thing, it needs a lot of understanding and skills to be able to use it according to the right way. Being knowledgeable in English grammar is an advantage that one can use for his career. Teachers or professors could get students attention in linguistic elements through error correction, noticing of salient forms in texts, and teacher- or student-initiated attention to a language feature.

Explicit teaching is better that implicit teaching. I believe that explicit teaching is more effective because instructors give outline of what the learning goals are for the students and offers clear explanations while in implicit teaching, instructors present the information and allows student to make their own conclusions. Each of us has our learning habits. Maybe some would prefer the explicit teaching and some would prefer the implicit teaching but I think with this techniques, we would be able to understand the information given and we would be able to give our ideas and conclusion on the given topic. One thing that we can do to enhance our English grammar is by practicing the language and taking it seriously.

Grammar should always be considered a vital tool for communication. Then, in teaching it, one should always consider the participant in learning. It's not always necessary to take one side for each student is unique and has different facets. The more you know the learner, the better you can think whether you'll apply the explicit or the implicit way of getting the student achieve the learning competencies.

So therefore I conclude that it's better to have the implicit way of teaching because (1) it allows the students to think creatively out of the box/broaden the imagination. (2) it excites the learners/motivates them to dicover more, and (3) it permits the learners to go beyond the expectations of the teacher since he/she might underscore important concepts.

And it's up to the learner after all.

  15. So, how should a professor teach grammar to engineering students?

Most engineering students as we know it are, let's say, not so abreast with the language. Although "Who says there's no English in Math?" is a common mantra to engineers, let's face it, we're not altogether good.

My answer? Simple, just to inform, instruct, facilitate, and correct these students. And yes, I agree that explicit teaching can be a more effective style in teaching engineering students because "the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting".

In other words, in explicit style of teaching, the instructor defines more clearly the material and explains it more thoroughly and also in a way that is not confusing.

To end this, let me quote an anonymous writer as he wrote, "Great men do not have great minds, but they do have great strategies in life. Strategies that are extracted from the very facts they learned."

I know you are one, reader.

people in the world speak their own, native language without having studied its grammar. Children start to speak before they even know the word "grammar". So think of grammar as something good, something positive, something that you can use to find your way.

teaching grammar is something easy for other people to do. But for the other instructorss, teaching, it depends on how they explain it to their students. it depends on their strategies and techniques on how they give it. . While instructors differ greatly in their opinions on the importance of grammar study in communicative language teaching and even more so in their approaches to teaching grammar, students do not always share the instructor's view of the role of grammar in their language learning.
It is clear that students feel that grammar acquisition is important. They don't always like it, but they recognize that it is necessary. It is also clear that the mention of the word "grammar" sends chills up many students' spines. Students also feel that specific types of exercises and/or activities are either useful or not useful when learning grammar. The responses of the students in this survey may have been influenced by a number of factors including the teaching style of the instructor in their present class, their own learning style, the emphasis placed on grammar in the language curriculum, whether or not students have studied a language previous to this one, among many others. But I think that we can use such information in attempting to assist students in their study of grammar.

but, after all, its up to the student on how they absorb the lessons of the instructor.

  17. How to teach grammar?

Grammar is very important in our daily life. It makes an individual confident in saying words. Like in teaching, professors uses many words to make the students understand what they are saying.

Professors should also know the backgrounds of the students that they are teaching.Because some of the students are from far provinces that might be late in latter's trend.

But,that problem can be solve easily through explicit teaching. It is a very effective way of teaching grammar for me.Explicit teaching is very appropriate way of teaching grammar because the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students.

It depend also to the students if they participate or not.

  18. Drawing out an opinion, I highly suggest that professors or instructors should teach grammar explicitly. As what the article pointed out, implicit teaching is about relaying information with no further explanations about the data of which may cause confusion among students. A possible result of it could be varying conclusions within the class regarding to what they've understand about the lesson or perhaps, no idea drawn out at all. Where as to explicit teaching, elaborations on the discussion for the benefit of the students will help the students to understand further the lesson tackled.

On the other hand, explicit teaching could be ineffective if the students are not participative enough to join the discussion. In the case of teaching grammar, if the latter social sickness is present to a student, he or she could possibly be having difficulty in speaking formally. To avoid such things, teaching strategies should be formulated. If the students are uninterested with the lesson, making it lively by ways of conducting activities about the lesson or by amusing them with witty feats is very suitable. Filling out the lacking property of effective teaching is a vital component in helping the students to understand the lesson easily and. In that way, the instructor could teach the lesson easily and explicitly.

After all, it takes the cooperation of all to understand everything that needs to be understood, teacher and students alike.

  19. According from the Merriam-Webster's dictionary, grammar is the study of the classes of words, their inflections and functions, and relations to the sentence. It is also the set of structural rules that governs the composition of clauses, phrase and words in any given language.

Learning and practicing grammar is challenging. It depends on the teacher-student connection. Now we all know that a professor has two options in teaching grammar. There's the implicit way and explicit way of teaching. But for me, I prefer the explicit way. It is more easy and it can be understood quickly. With the goals and outlines provided, I know what and how to learn.

In the end, the result will always reveal. Some people can learn from the implicit while some learn in the explicit ways of teaching. The fact that we are taught grammar and practice what we've learned.

Communicative skills simply imply one's excellence to interact effectively towards his learners. In teaching grammar, I believe this certain skill is essentially needed. Drawing student's attention in teaching is not as simple as one may think, for it requires both intellect and skills of the teacher for the students to be able to comprehend and apply such acquired learning in the real world, especially in the field of grammar. Since we have our own native language, we tend to mix this with the way an English grammar is constructed. It's considered to be erroneous then. That is why one should be effective enough in teaching linguistic elements and grammar rules.

But for one to be able to do so, an explicit teaching I believe, should be conducted rather than the implicit way. Explicit as its name suggests, its more elaborate and precise than the latter. Thus, the greater the tendency of the students to learn sufficiently. It includes the communicative tasks such as discussion of examples, error correction, giving lectures about grammar/vocabulary/spelling and the such, like what the author has stated in the article. Furthermore, the use of definitive strategies and techniques can also be done. Through these, one may be sure enough that learning grammar is made more comprehensive and easier.

Everyone has their own ways in adapting or understanding grammar. Some can easily understand it right away, while some still needs to study grammar very hard just to understand it fully. The professor should know the capabilities of his students so that he won’t overestimate or underestimate them.

    How should one teach grammar?

One should teach grammar in a way that he’s comfortable at. It would be difficult for both the professor and the students if he doesn’t teach grammar in a way that he’s not comfortable with. First of all, it is because the professor would have a hard time teaching the students if he teaches them in way that he’s not familiar with. No one could teach properly at that state. Second, there’s a tendency that the professor would feel anxious because he’s not used to the way he’s teaching the students. Lastly, the students could not understand the lessons properly if they can sense that there is something wrong in way their professor teaches them and that could lead to a bad result of the performance of the professor and the students.

I agree that explicit teaching is better that implicit teaching. It is because implicit teaching could cause confusion since the lessons are not explained well. There are some occasions that SOME students can understand it easily. However, there are still occasions that SOME students cannot figure out it right away that they still need the instructions to be explained to them thoroughly. Explicit teaching is better since it clearly discusses the things that need to be done. There’s no need for the students to thinks twice or have difficulty in understanding their professor since their professor was able to discuss it using “explicit teaching”.

In the end, one should teach grammar in the way they want to. There is no rule on how should one teach grammar. The decision is up to the professor on how he wants to deliver it. However, one should always consider the feelings and capabilities of the students, and the environment around them. A good professor knows how to deal with different kinds of occasions that’ll happen during class. “Everything happens for a reason”, which means that your professor is not chosen to be your professor if he cannot teach grammar properly.

  22. Grammar is a universal entity that is present in all people. This grammar is taught everyday of one’s life since birth. As time goes by, kids are being taught how to speak which is like a “preparatory” knowledge on grammar. By this, kids save such learning in their mind that its easy form them to adapt the prior teachings of grammar in schools. As a filipino, we have culture that has been changed or “modified” from the spaniards, americans and others. Because of such situation, we develop to master more than just one language as we grow up. Firstly, we learn our own language which is Filipino but this “Filipino Language” is just a generalization of more than 300 language of Filipinos. Secondly, we learn english because it is being introduced to us together with our own language that triggers us to be ahead of such grammar. All language have grammar, such that all grammar are the same.
To teach this grammar, one must use communicative task. This makes the understanding of grammar simpler and vivid, because it focuses more on form. As for those engineering student, this way, the understanding such grammar is very detailed that enables us to know right away the use of words. Engineering tackles mainly on mathematics, but I cannot say that english is far out to mathematics because english is a vital tool in understanding math. When explaining a problem, english is prior to be used. Moreover, in communicative task, discussion of examples will expand the knowledge of an individual that such discussion already tackles three main levels which are the vocabulary, grammar and spelling. Also as I read the text, there is a debate between the explicit and implicit teaching of vocabolary that I find very interesting. I find explicit teaching not just more but is the best way of teaching vocabolary because it directs out what is important to remember or what to use. This way, it is easier to remember such syntax of grammar.

  23. Grammar is a very important part of a culture for it is the main factor on how that culture or society interacts with each other. On this matter this makes communicative skills important in enhancing each individual's grammar. This is where instructors come in, teaching how to properly use grammar to their students.

For me, a more effective way of teaching grammar is the implicit approach because it gives more elaboration to the students on the idea of the topic rather than the explicit way which just gives the idea and let's the student understand on his own. This approach gives a better understanding and idea on how that particular rule should be properly used.

Another way for me is to level with the students on a way that it doesn't confuse a student more and also in a way that keeps that student interested on the topic. Teaching is successful when you can see a good outcome of that student on his communicative skills and his grammar.

Teaching grammar to engineering students is different and quite-distant to their specification. They are more related to mathematics and applied science which is very vital for their course especially major subjects. Some might not be interested to learn about english grammar, therefore, the teacher/professor should have a persuasive strategy to attract engineering students and get their interest in learning this subject. In that case, the teacher/professor should be lively, vigorous, and have a good sense of humor in teaching his/her engineering students eventhough its just a minor subject for them. Moreover, the teacher/professor should be able to know and consider the background of his/her students in order to deliver his/her lessons effectively and efficiently. Thus, its easy for the teacher/professor to create learning strategies that would fit to his/her students and fortunately, will not underrate the english subject.

English grammar is not easy especially to us whom are not native speakers of English. Even Americans have errors in technicalities especially in the way they speak and English is their primary language. But if the learners, the students, have an interest and passion in learning English subject, then learning would be effective. It just depend on the approach, as well as methods and strategies of the teacher/professor on how will he/she make this subject interesting and enjoyable to learn for. English is very essential for each and everyone of us in regards of communication, not just for engineering students. That’s why students should learn this subject and it all starts at learning grammar.

  26. Better communication creates unity and grammar is one of the key towards a good one. We are Filipinos; we have our own language to speak so it means we have our own grammar to follow for us to clearly understand each other but the Earth is consists of different countries and in order to fulfill the country’s needs, we need to reach the foreign countries to deal with them. So, English, considered as a “Universal Language” which is commonly used by different countries to communicate with each other can be more complicated if we are not that familiar with its grammar and vocabularies since wrong sentence construction can lead to wrong understanding. And that is why we need to learn grammar.

As read, there are two ways of teaching vocabulary, the implicit and the explicit. But for me, explicit teaching is more convenient for the student since the teacher elaborates the information for the students to understand what the significant uses of every vocabulary they learn every day. This also helps the students to enhance their skills in grammar in which they will be using to communicate to others.

Books, magazines, and other reading materials can help us to learn more about grammar but instructors can help us more on how to deal with it. In addition, the student’s determination and motivation is needed to master this lesson for communication.

There are a lot of strategies in teaching, but not all of them are efficient for the students. For me, grammar is not the most exciting subject matter in the world, but it is important.

Reading is very important because students will be exposed to the use of the language. This will also help them get their intelligence in thinking and understanding in the English language.

As a student, I prefer explicit than implicit teaching simply because it allows the students to come up first with his understanding and the instructors give outline of what the learning goals for the students and it also offers clear explanations.

Based on my observations Engineering students tend to consider English subject as a boring lesson. Some Engineering students would prefer to solve mathematical word problems than studying words. Mathematics and Science is the interest of most engineering students and for English subject I think some are just forcing themselves to enjoy.

In order for the students particularly engineering students to enjoy English grammar lessons which have distance to their specification, teacher must be alive, alert, enthusiastic and have a good sense of humor to attract students. Students listens more to their teachers if that particular teacher has a good relationship to his/her students. There is no particular method in teaching that is really better than the other because it really depends on the individual which they think is more comfortable for them, therefore teachers must know their students first.

An English professor has his steps in teaching grammar, and these are proven not to be disappointing. These steps will make person more fluent and correct in his/her grammar and will also provide him/her communication to foriegners or foreign countries.
Different professors of english may have different approaches in teaching grammar but in my opinion, a great way in teaching grammar is to speak the words ourselves and learn best from our mistakes. Students are best taught the language english by the term referred to as explicit teaching for this kind of teaching is said to be provide the students the goals and also provides the students explanations coming from the professor. Any person who knows what his true objective is, will fulfill this objective faster and easier. The lesson may also include reading and writing but what I would prefer would be reading with comprehension for this will enhance a persons thinking and memory and may also widen his/her vocabulary.
Though it would be better to say all the ways of teaching grammar to a person effectively, but, ultimately, it is all up to the learner's determination to learn the language english, if a student is not interested, it's not the professors fault(sometimes).

  30. In my opinion,a particular teaching method could only be better than another depending to the convenience of the learners. But in general,Explicit teaching is indeed a better way of teaching grammar. It enables the learners to simply understand the correct usage of it. Whereas in Implicit teaching, learners will have confusions on how to conclude information structures in a given topic.

I think it would be better if explicit teaching is applied first then after the learners have truly understood the topic, implicit teaching should be done to recap the lessons learned by the learners.

But if it is, then of course you'll make sure that he can swallow it. How about a solid food? What shall you do for him to be able to eat that considering he is old enough to digest such food?

Are those questions hard to answer? If yes, then you can say that it's hard to teach grammar. You must really have a great communication with the students not just orally but also in heart and mind. Because we're talking again with engineering students here, then I must say that in general, they are not good in grammar even just speaking in English according to other people. Let's say it's true. So as a professor, I must double my effort in making them understand. As a wise person, I'll choose the more effective one, the explicit way. Why explicit? It's not just because of what I've read in the passage but it is proven and tested and if you really analyze the situation, teaching explicitly or teaching in detail is better than teaching implicitly or just implying what is written.

So, now it is good to have not just the right but the better choice. It is because a professor must not let his students to be wandering off in another dimension. Always remember, the baby will always be happy if being fed properly regardless of the other factors and that smile will never fade, ever.

Communicative teaching techniques allows student-teacher interaction which might yield better results in terms of student comprehension, student's interest towards the topic, and the like. Referring to Mr. Ingilan's article, " Communicative tasks can also be done through discussion of examples, and some intellectual effort", it implies that there is an exchange of information between the student and the teacher. Comparing it with reading a text book for reference, most people might agree that they will understand a topic much easier if the teacher discusses it than reading the topic in the text book which requires critical thinking and deeper understanding towards the topic.

If I were to choose which teaching style in vocabulary is better, I'll surely go for explicit. In explicit teaching style, most,if not all, of the information is provided before we can raise our hand and ask questions to clarify the meaning of the word. One doesn't need any study or research in order to prove explicit teaching is better. Most of us can relate it with our personal experiences with topics given to us by teachers by explicit means and implicit means. Whereas to implicit style of teaching, one must have a good foundation in reading and comprehension before the person can fully understand the topic given with ease. Unfortunately, only a handful of students are gifted with this blessing. And the gifted students are those students are the ones excel or enjoy reading.

Since majority of the students are not the "gifted ones", the teacher/professor must adapt to the situation in order for the students to unleash their full potential.

  33. Teaching Grammars is not an easy task. It requires a very good teaching skills especially in a communicative way because grammar needs a long process of understanding and wide knowledge of the learner so that he/she can successfully know what is grammar. The professor must teach grammar in a creative communication to students , especially for the Engineering students because not all Engineering students are good in Grammars.

In general, teaching grammar needs the cooperation of the learner to the professor because if the professors and the learners are not interconnected to each other, the professor will have a hard time teaching the learner and thus the grammar always starts from a communication, because without communication, there is no grammar. The professor must also have good strategies on getting the attention of the students so that the learner can easily understand grammars because teaching grammar is not boring when the professor is also not boring.

In short, teaching grammar is an important thing to us all so that we can understand each other. Especially for the learner because they need the knowledge of their mentors and thus their mentors must also have good grammars so that the learner can easily understand them and there will be no conflict between them.

  34. English as second language among Filipinos are highly appreciated and in fact, according to studies Filipinos are one of the most literate in the said language leading to ASEAN countries. Schools, offices, business industries, highly recognized firm are using English as “Medium of Instruction”.
Moreover, English Grammar are very essential both in oral communication and written innovations, the mere fact that it is the number one components in “Speech Communication”.
Engineering as one of the leading choices among professionals, it is therefore necessary to learn the language most specifically in oral communication. Today, we are now in the world of competition, where in English as language plays great responsibility in communication particularly to attract the interest of your builders in an era of capitalization. Thus, Filipinos it is our dreams and aspirations to maintain our “prestige” as English speaking country.
Teaching English Grammar in Engineering must be thoroughly and rigidly given an attention since we are not only calculating numbers but it is in our profession who belongs to a “High Class Level OF SOCIETY” IN competition, therefore our speech communication is very essential nevertheless we are not dealing an ordinary people but indeed we are dealing professionals in the world of industry.
I am looking forward someday that I am not only building my own commerce but also building my own communication through English as language in the world of competition and act globalization.

Teaching to a group of individuals is not easy since since these people have different needs for effective knowledge-gaining processes. Many researchers have conducted series of innumerable studies concerning on what may be the best style for teaching different kind of subjects in various areas.

In concerning with grammar, the professor should take time first learning the range of grammatical capabilities of the group under his concern. Knowing their weaknesses and strength for a better understanding on where to focus during lectures and discussions. With wise planning and decision making, it would help greatly in solving the challenge of teaching English grammar.

As a student, given a choice between explicit and implicit way of teaching grammar, I would choose explicit for some important reasons. First, it is more elaborated compared to implicit. Lastly, it is more simplified and directly highlights a topic to be discuss which would suit well the needs of most Filipinos who are not native speakers of the said language. In this way, students could learn more about a certain topic which would help his/her improve his/her grammatical skills. And with the right amount of effort from the instructor /professor and students, learning English Grammar would be fun and hassle free.

Grammatical flaws sting our eardrums. Whenever we hear someone talking using an incorrect grammar, only two things may happen. It's either we'll feel annoyed or we'll laugh our hearts out.

It is truly embarrassing to commit grammatical errors, especially when all eyes are on you. You will become an instant celebrity, in a negative way. And just before you know it, you'll become the number one target of bullies. To prevent these traumatic things from happening, we usually seek for our English professor's expertise.

Generally, there are only two types of professor in USEP: the one who teaches implicitly and the one who teaches explicitly. But as for me, I prefer the latter.

Explicit teaching is the complete opposite of 'spoon-feeding.' In this type of teaching, the professor gives the technical definition of a certain topic, plus, he explains it in a way that the students could easily absorb. This would include the usage of interactive exercises, written compositions and speech-related activities. In other words, the students actually learn while having fun. This is undoubtedly the best way to engrave every grammar lesson to every student's brain.

If your professor uses explicit teaching, well, congratulations! You are in good hands.

“Awaken people’s curiosity. It is enough to open minds, do not overload them. Put there just a spark.”- Anatole France

As English instructors, teachers should find the best way to explain lessons. It’s not enough to stick with what’s common and ordinary. Explicit teaching of grammar is a better way to introduce and widen topics about English grammar lessons. Teachers who do so could find a better result or improvements on how the students react to them. Communicative tasks will stop the boredom of speaking-listening-student-teacher relationship during classes in English. It can further encourage the students to learn grammar lessons in a cheerful manner.

“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.”-Chinese Proverb

As to the learners, it’s not enough and satisfactory to just sit on the armchairs and just listen, but we by ourselves, must give some effort to learn the lessons. We must participate and cooperate on every activity our instructors give.

With a good communication by the teachers and students, a holistic teaching and learning strategy is formed, thus, would lighten the burdens of both.

Learning never exhausts the mind. It can be done in numerous ways. As a matter of fact, it depends upon the teacher or professor as how his strategies would affect the minds of the students. Student engineers are not only good in Mathematics and Sciences yet there are better in English grammar. The learning strategies that are taught to the other colleges are still the same in college of engineering.

I believe that a teacher should use communicative tasks as way of teaching students because it gives the students a lot of information in grammar; it is also effective in drawing student's attention through the grammatical errors and makes their own conclusions out of their own understanding. Communicative task as the prowess to change or correct our poisoned minds and satisfactorily fulfill our expectations on what the teacher would say out from the lesson.

On the other hand, explicit teaching of vocabulary is the most effective way in order for the person to learn. The instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, explanations of the skills and information structures. It gives more understanding of a certain thing, it improves the abilities of the students to make conclusions and it supplies enough knowledge to student engineers to enhance their English competencies.

Teaching grammar is not an easy task, especially for engineering students wherein they're too engrossed with brain-damaging math subjects. So, how should a professor teach grammar to his engineering students?

There are many ways to teach grammar. But to help the students learn grammar easier, one should use the explicit way of teaching. Why? It's because explicit way of teaching, the instructor clearly outlines and explains what to learn and where to focus. Hence, students would likely learn and understand a lesson better. Unlike in the implicit way of teaching, the instructor does not clearly state the objectives but rather simply presents the information and allows the student to make their own conclusions. The worst part is, this phenomenon may lead to misinterpretations.

Although these ways of teaching are proven to be effective, this would still not be effective if the student is not interested. Plus, it also depends on what type of teaching he is comfortable with.

That is why I agree that the explicit method would be the best method in teaching grammar. It is because it would be easy to learn the world of grammar when the instructor gives explanation and clear outline of what the learning goals about. Whereas in implicit method that the instructor only presents the information or problem to the student and allows the student to make their own conclusions and create their own conceptual structures that would make it difficult to understand. And for the part of the instructor, they should be careful in the way they teach because sometimes students easily find error in the proper usage of grammar and it would affect them as a teacher. Students think that they are already good in grammar since it is their field of specialization. So students think that they know everything about grammar. That is why the teacher should choose the best strategy for effective teaching to be able to catch the attention of students that it is more fun in learning grammar. 

Grammar is not a piece of cake so English professors must acquire a teaching style or strategy that students would be able to absorb into their minds. The question now is how should a professor teach grammar to engineering students. Professors who acquire explicit way of teaching is more effective than those who implicitly teach in my own insight. Misinterpretations are possible or probable in implicit teaching because as stated in the text, a student can assimilate only a problem in a way that makes the most sense to them. It is obvious that this depends on students' capabilities to learn with indirect aid of a professor.

As for engineering students, grammar is not really a relevant point or field with accordance to their career in the future so their professors must clearly state examples directly to them. By these, the significant relationship of grammar and some mathematical formulas and problems (in relation to engineering field) will be clearly or highly emphasized since these are presented most in English language and the language really needs strict grammar check.

I therefore conclude that teaching explicitly shows and displays clear and direct generalizations since by this, students will surely interact in the class as what a professor would expect.

In my ten years of staying in school, I've already encountered the two teaching techniques, explicit and implicit teaching. I have encountered these in various subjects. These techniques meet the objectives of the lesson but they differ on how we reach the objectives.

Based on my own experience, explicit teaching has brought me easily to the objectives of the lesson, especially on vocabulary. According to the text, the instructor clearly outlines what are the learning goals and gives vivid explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting. This helps the student to understand the lesson clearly. This prevents them from making false conclusions about the concept presented by the instructor. This technique also shows us the flow of the lesson, on how sub-topics are inter-related to each other, thus preventing confusion between students and the lesson that will be studied later.

In conclusion, I favor explicit teaching employed in vocabulary teaching. This helps many students to be good in vocabulary easily and with better understanding.

Talking and writing has always been a part of our daily lives. We communicate through language. Each country having their own different language, and because of the different languages of the different people of the world, speaking a foreign, or shall i say, international language such as English is hard for we don't know much about it. Once we have learned about it, we are able to understand it and it is not hard to speak it anymore, but the most tricky part is the correct grammar.

Teaching correct grammar to students is really very tricky for professors. The wide variety of words and their functions in a sentence are a bit tricky to handle especially when the students don't really care much about grammar,"as long as we understand each other, I'm good," as my old friend always said.

But still to me,"Hindi pwede ang pwede na," is always my motto. As long as you can improve something, keep on improving it, and our english professor tends to improve our english grammar well.

Explicit Teaching is better than implicit teaching. From the word "explicit" meaning: precisely and clearly expressed, leaving nothing to implication. Explicit Teaching gives us the main idea and feeds us the desired information we need, while in Implicit Teaching, you are given a piece of information and you are supposed to learn about it yourself. Where are more information? Where are the experiences of the professor in that area? It is not complete and we need to learn for ourselves.

Both explicit and implicit teaching are good methods, but for me, explicit teaching is way better than implicit teaching, since the student learns directly from the experienced professor he/she looks up to.

Through explicit teaching, a professor can easily teach a student good grammar as long as the student wishes to learn and listens well of course.

  46. How should one teach grammar? It seems to be easy, but it really requires to be an open-minded person, to have a good background knowledge in grammar and most of all, to be able to teach the students in a way that they can easily understand and at the same time, make it fun as possible.

One should be open-minded especially in dealing with the attitudes of the engineering students because most of the students are not that good in English. Some have difficulties in comprehending and analyzing the discussions. So, the professor should make a strategy on how to get the interest of the students towards learning the English grammar. Learning the English grammar is not easy because from time to time, grammar can be changed from traditional to modern language. One should be patient enough to understand and accept if the students can't easily understand the discussion.
One should also have a good background about the English grammar so that if the students have any clarifications or questions about grammar, the professor can easily answer and explain why.
Most of all, learning should also be enjoyable. Doing activities and cracking some jokes in the class are only few of the things that can make the discussions fun.
I also preferred to teach explicitly for the reason that the professor can really teach and give the facts on the lessons regarding the English grammar thoroughly.

With those things, English grammar for engineering students could be easy and interesting.

Explicit way of teaching is more useful in teaching vocabulary and grammar, because students will understand easier with the help of their instructor on how they can make sentences which is grammatically correct. And most important the instructor will be there to make corrections and explain further. Sometimes it is important to learn by ourselves but its is easier to learn with the help of others.

  48. When teaching to a class or a group of people, it is my belief that the teacher should first gain an understanding of the different strengths and weaknesses of his/her students. Each one of has his/her own fields in which we are good at; the same is also true for teaching. There are various styles and techniques in teaching that are applicable and can cater to the needs of all individuals, but different styles are best suited for teaching in different kinds of subjects and various areas.
I agree with the statement by the author that “One should teach grammar through a communicative task.” This is true because learners are able to learn more efficiently if the teacher is to properly explain the lesson and give the students a clear understanding about topic, despite of their different learning styles and capacities. The professor should also take time to learn about and consider the specific needs of the individuals in the class for more effective learning. With all this, the professor can wisely plan and decide on the various techniques which are best suited to use in teaching grammar.
In my opinion as a student, and based from personal experience, explicit teaching presents a much better opportunity for us to learn and fully comprehend various lesson. I would say that explicit style of teaching is good for teaching grammar for two (2) reasons. First, is that it is more simplified and provides the learner with a clearer understanding of the topic and; Second, there are certain topics in grammar which require a clear explanation before they can be understood. As Filipinos, we are not native speakers in the English language. English is entirely different from our own vernacular language in many aspects; this explains why most ideas are very hard to translate in to English. In this way, students are able to learn more about certain topics which can enhance and improve their skills in grammar and English. With the help and guidance of the professor, and the right amount of effort from the students, the challenge of learning and teaching grammar is becomes a problem that finally be solved.

It is really necessary that educators have their concern on how they can best present material that is “learnable” for different students.
As a student, i agree that explicit teaching is better than implicit teaching. As it was stated,Explicit instruction, means teaching where the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the student, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting.
On the other hand ,Implicit instruction, refers to teaching where the instructor does not outline such goals or make such explanations overtly, but rather simply presents the information or problem to the student and allows the student to make their own conclusions and create their own conceptual structures and assimilate the information in the way that makes the most sense to them.

    For example,
Some students, specially the engineering students found English difficult at sometimes. Some would say "why should we study this/that?", or "why is it really necessary to use correct grammar when we are speaking the universal language?". That is why we really need help from our instructors about something that we found difficult to understand.
Though students have to work harder in order to learn through implicit teaching, still explicit teaching is more effective method than that of the implicit as it is also by principal investigator Laurie Cutting and her team.

At the end, it is the student's choice, either implicit or explicit as long as everyone is able to learn, it is all that matters.

Teaching grammar is not effective without an effective teacher. It is hard to learn something without performing the learnings engaging with the topic. The communicative way of teaching is the best way to let the students apply what they learn in the discussion especially when it was concern with grammars.

    Explicit or implicit
In my own understanding, the best way to teach the students is the explicit way of teaching or the discussion of topic vividly and vastly that anyone could easily understand what the thing someone talks about. It is not about feeding or taking, it is more about learning and absorbing the topics correctly. I said this because “we”students cannot accurately understand the topic with just the given information, we need more explanations and more examples for us to completely understand the topic. In implicit way, students cannot easily understand the topic because only the informations are presented. Without books, without internet, and without the effort of the students, the given topic was just a letter with an invinsible ink.
Most students if not all, prefer mostly in listening to the discussion rather than self-study, and with the explicit way of teaching that most students including the others could understand the topic easily.

As a country whose language is Filipino, learning another language especially English is another story. Going back in history books, we Filipinos were great English speakers. A good example for that are people living in Benguet areas, who amazes me especially for those elders who speak good English. Learning English especially for those who are taking up engineering will be a game changer on their future careers. It is on the student if he/she has the will to learn and also the teacher if he/she has the passion and patience to teach those in in dire need of education.

For me, explicit teaching is better than implicit because explicit teaching does not let readers understand the vocabulary just by themselves and also it does not let readers misinterpret or misunderstood the vocabulary.

How should a professor teach grammar to Engineering students? For me, as an engineering student, I believe that the best way to teach grammar to engineering students is to communicate with them using the language or medium of instruction that is familiar to the students. As we all know, most of the engineering students are boys, so most them are easily bored and they have their own interest such as online games and etc. So for them to able to fully understand the topic, the professor should be creative and patient enough in giving them creative activities or teaching them in such a way that they will enjoy or at least keep them awake for the entire lecture.

I also believe that explicit teaching is more effective than implicit teaching because in implicit teaching the students will only base or depend their answer/understanding on their capacity to understand the problem or topic that is given and there is a big possibility that the students will misinterpret it.

Some people are fast-learners. Others are slow. And in the field of grammar and vocabulary, especially in English, a number of Filipinos are “weak” in these aspects. Effective teaching of these critical areas is very crucial in order to incorporate their ideas on grammars and vocabularies. Professors should have a plan or an arrangement to inculcate to the minds of his/her learners the fundamental nature of grammar and vocabulary.

And to the article, I agree that explicit teaching is better that implicit teaching.

Professors should use the explicit teaching of grammar and vocabulary because the professor could state his teachings in a clear and precise way. Through direct and detailed way of teaching, the learners of different expertise and abilities will have a vivid understanding an¬¬d effective learning on grammar and vocabulary. Implicit teaching on the other hand, would only indicate by suggestion rather than explicit reference. The ideas are not directly expressed thus, making the learners having a hard time understanding what the professor has imparted. It can be vague and unstructured. And students may misinterpret the instruction.

Before professors teach their learners in explicit way, they should tell students the point for learning, explain to students what to do, illustrate the way on how to do the activity and guide students with practical application. Professors should also know the background or the intellectual capacity of his/her learners in order know what strategies to be made. And the rest will be up to his learners on how to internalize the teachings of his/her professor.

Communicative Tasks is very effective to students who have difficulties with their grammars.Professors an also use the words which are the students are familiar of or get the class attention through words that a student merely hears from a teacher. That is for better communication.

And about the explicit teaching, its effective on subject or lessons that needs more explanations not just leaving handout to students. Professors should know whether his/hers students understand the lesson so that he/she can expound more the lesson.

So in the article, which tackles about the two ways of teaching. These are the explicit and implicit teaching. Were explicit simply describes as giving clear outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanation of the skills and information structures they are presenting whereas in implicit, the instructor does not outlines such as goals or make such explanations overtly, but rather simply presents the information or problem to the student and allows the student to make their own conclusions and create their own conceptual structures and assimilate the information in the way that makes the most sense to them.
Then based also in the article and the authors mentioned that explicit teaching is much better way of teaching because the proponents can understood and clearly digested the information and applied it smoothly. Therefore it also matters about the way of teaching of why a student cannot get easily the ruling of grammar. Then the answer for that is the explicit teaching.
But you know all of that concerns we have the great responsibility, us learners. Because if we exert interest and effort we can learn all of those even how many techniques a teacher use, we can learn.

Teaching grammar to students is one of the toughest tasks faced by most instructors, and for good reason. Many of us do not even fully understand our own grammar rules. Even when we do, conveying them in an understandable way of writing can be challenging. Regardless of difficulty, grammar rules must be understood to grasp the language. For the instructors, it’s their duty to make sure students both understand how grammar works and how to use it, by Explicit Teaching. For the reason that, explicit teaching is the most effective way and can be easily understand by the students because it is an instructional strategy used by instructors to meet the needs of their students and engage them in unambiguous clearly articulated teaching and topics are taught in a logical order and directed by the teacher. In short, explicit teaching is another way of saying effective, meaningful direct teaching.

  62. Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach well. Grammar is one of those issues that does not have an easy solution. It is tricky and it is tough, kind of like all important things in life. It is not for the faint of heart or the creatively shallow. There are teachers who make the traditional method work; somehow they have found a way to get bits of information to implant themselves into student minds like tiny eggs of precious information. There are teachers who don't handle grammar at all, but they make their students read enough and write enough that somehow the they pass their tests and grow up with a basic knowledge of the concepts; and there are teachers who creatively combine grammar to other classroom activities.

In my own perspective, English teachers must know the learning styles of his students and adapt from it. This will not let students to get bored while learning instead, it will let students to learn proper grammar and avoid grammatical errors. Teacher must also give examples to students so they can have a background to proper grammar. Songs, poems, movies and cartoons can make examples. Explicit learning is also an effective way because it was the method taught to me by my previous English teachers.

It still depends on the students on what way of learning grammar they would be comfortable.

  63. As a student of an engineering class, one should also be able to learn and understand the keys and terminologies not only to the field of mathematics and science but also the fundamentals of english.

The learnings of such individual also depends on how the teacher manages and let his students understand each word in his lesson. The teaching communicative skills or way of an excellent professor is the very best way indeed to help the improvement and absorption of knowledge on one's capacity in understanding the topic given so that he or she may be able to develop and use his or her own skills on his endeavors in life.

Grammar should be taught in both explicit and implicit way. Students should be assisted by teachers to learn grammar and as soon as they master the necessary competencies, then that's the time where implicit teaching takes place.

  64. Teachers should teach grammar to students using Explicit instruction because in this type of teaching, teachers give a brief explanation about the topic being discussed for the students to understand and at the same time students can ask questions to the teacher for the data which are not clear to them.

In the Implicit type of teaching based on my experience when I was still in high school, many of our teachers use this type of teaching where they only present the information without giving enough explanation leaving us questions in our mind about the topic. For me having this kind of teaching sucks. We are forced to understand a certain topic which they don't explain. Its like teaching students nothing, because teaching is only successful if the one being taught fully understands the topic. Teaching is for students to learn and not to be confused.

For me, Explicit is way better than the Implicit type of teaching.

Now that we are in college, we engineering students must fully master grammar. Though it might seem insignificant to our field, mind you that mastering grammar is really, REALLY important.

I believe that explicit teaching is the best way to teach grammar to engineering students. First off, it is said that in explicit teaching "the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting". In short, this means that students are given "tutorials" on grammar. With this type of teaching, students won't have any frustrations and confusions on grammar. Not only that, explicit teaching of grammar might even give us a head start on our grammar skills.

  66. Teaching grammar is a difficult task especially when the students don’t show much interest about it. A good way would be drawing the attention of the students to the linguistic elements such that, they would be able to develop themselves in noticing error corrections, awareness of the grammatical rules, comprehending texts, giving examples and etc. Thus, communicative task is suitable in teaching grammar.

Explicit way of teaching vocabulary is way better than implicit, for in explicit way of teaching the instructor clearly outlines the goals for the students and offers a clear and understandable explanations; while in the implicit the instructor does not outline those goals and make some explanations, the instructor simply presents the information to the students and allowing them to make their own conclusion which may lead to misconceiving in the part of the students and hence, will generate another problem.

Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach well. There are many arguments for putting grammar in the foreground in second language teaching.

Language teachers who adopt this definition focus on grammar as a set of forms and rules. They teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. This results in bored, disaffected students who can produce correct forms on exercises and tests, but consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context.

They assume that students will absorb grammar rules as they hear, read, and use the language in communication activities their active understanding of what grammar is and how it works in the language they already know.

It should be tailor-made to meet the needs of students, and should weave both prescriptive and descriptive practices into relevant, meaningful instruction.

During the height of the whole language movement, when teaching grammar in isolation became taboo, these teachers were left frustrated and baffled by the lack of grammar instruction in the classroom.

So for me if i would be able to choose one of this strategies, probably i would go on the explicit one because it says that the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting respectively, for a better understanding in the part of the students itself.

  68. We all know that engineering students are most likely poor in English grammar. For me, the best way a professor should teach grammar on engineering students is that to know what are the capabilities of the students. On where the students are efficient and how they process your delivery in their minds.

The effectiveness of the teacher is measured on how the students deeply understand the lesson. Teaching grammar should be both teach in explicit and implicit way. It must not always be explicit way because students will depend on you. It must also be in implicit so that the students will not be spoon-fed and will allow them to inculcate the learning they have done on your discussion.

Grammar is very important in our daily lives. We cannot work without it. This is our foundation on how we express all of what we have in our minds. For me, competency is learning grammar.

Teaching is a very difficult task, a determined passion, and a penitence of patience, a mixture of pain and pleasure.
An effective teacher knows how to distinguish not only his students’ strengths and weaknesses but his\her as well. He\she must understand that the classroom is a war zone, aim at getting their attention and making them surrender to your will. However, how will the teacher do this? In addition, more importantly, what strategy will be applicable to teach engineering students who are well known for their hardheaded bullish aura? To top it all, will the teacher attain success in teaching these people the English grammar. Well, it is quite a challenge, definitely a tough one.
The way I analyzed the situation, it need not complex answers. A simple solution would do. Have you seen milk advertisements for babies? Have you noticed that they always end it with the message that breast milk is best for babies? Why don’t we apply the logic ‘WHAT’S BEST WILL TAKE CARE OF THE REST’? Just like how Math subjects are taught to engineering students, the same strategy should be applied as well to students in teaching grammar. To clearly elaborate the subject, the use of vernacular language should be allowed. We are not native speakers of the English language so it would create additional problem on how will the students learn if they cannot comprehend the lesson taught to them. In learning the proper usage of grammar, all we need to do is understand the structure. You might get worried that the quality of education will be compromised but to be exact, we comprise the educational quality that we are offering to students if they don’t understand a thing on what you were saying. As a teacher, one must understand that the most vital part in mentoring the students is how much learning they had acquired from you. In this sense, a teacher’s effectiveness is measured. Another strategy I could suggest is in accordance with the author’s point of view is teaching students explicitly. Let’s take Mathematics again as an example since this subject is the most frequently tackled subject in relation to their field. Mathematics is verbally taught; presenting it to students and letting them discover ways on solving the problems involved in it is a wrong jumping assumption that men learn if they study by themselves hard enough. It is a misconception on the limitation of human learning capabilities. Explicit teaching is the best weapon one should use in achieving efficient teaching.
Teaching is a challenge; challenges to improvise, improve, and survive.

The English language plays a very important role around the world. Not just because it is the universal language but rather it also helps us to communicate and understand each other. Truly, communicative task is appropriate in teaching grammar to learners. It is the best way in order for the students to improve their own way of speaking and writing. Grammar is often used by non-linguists with a very broad meaning that’s why some of the students tend to use a lot of books or even big dictionaries in order for them to understand. Good thing is that there is this what they call explicit teaching of vocabulary which is better than implicit teaching.

In this way, it would be more easier for the students to understand their lessons in school. It helps them to clearly understand someones’s own skills and capabilities as well as gain a clearer understanding. It also gives them a clear explanation and at the end, they will start loving and doing English grammar.

I am preferred to this because not all the students have the same mental ability. Some can easily understand the topic while others do not. But at the end, it is up to the student on how they are going to understand and absorb all the learning taught to them by their instructor.

Grammar is difficult to teach because if you are an english teacher and you're teaching engineering students, you have a deep patience in teaching grammar to your students.

The best way to teach the students is through explicit teaching because it explains that the teachers will explain what is the purpose of the said lesson and gives the clear examples of what they are teaching so that in the end the students will be able to learn from the said purpose.

But in overall, it depends on the student's listening capabilities and appilcation skills so that they will learn and understand grammar with flying colors.

I had always believed that what we learned and how much we learned in the past depended on how we were taught. We all know that we need to be knowledgeable in terms of grammar and teaching it is not an easy task. For me,as an engineering student,I learn more effective when the topic is presented visually and given with many examples specially on the spot scenarios. I do agree that explicit way of teaching is more effective for us than the other one which is "implicit".
We students tend to participate or to have interest in the topic when its being presented the way that we can relate/comprehend such as using vernacular language, giving examples and so on.

After all, the instructor should be aware of the learning background of the student(s) in order to make strategies needed to effectively teach the learner and also the learners should give their attention and participate for them to really understand the lesson.

  74. Everyone is unique likewise every instructor has his own method on how he could inculcate knowledge on his students. The technique that was used can only be effective if his students accept it. If we search on books or even the net about teaching techniques a lot would show up but only few are mostly used. One technique that is commonly used is the method where the teacher knows who his students are allowing him to have a better communication and interaction with them. A teacher must also consider his or her students as the objects of the learning process suggest the importance of knowing the students themselves. “A good teacher pay close attention to the factors affecting student’s ability to learn” this is according to the work of Grambs and Carr, 1979.

Another method that I strongly like is Coyote Teaching. Coyote teaching is a method of teaching and mentoring. A coyote teacher never gives direct answers, and answers question with questions, inspiring the student to dig deeper into the lessons. In this way a students would not be too dependent on his instructor instead he would find ways to seek the answer of his question for him to fully understand.

Though some engineering students took up their respective courses because they lack in the English language, still they can't deny that it will be very essential in the future. Communicative task is an appropriate way to teach grammar, and I believe in that. Correcting errors would somehow make a student more efficient in grammar, since you can learn something from mistakes. Discussion of examples is also good for me, because it helps me understand even more than the rules and statements alone.

As for the comparison implicit and explicit teaching of vocabulary, I agree with what the author stated. Explicit teaching will give you additional information on how to do something correct, whereas implicit teaching leaves you hanging, and you might not know what to do anymore. From my experience, implicit teaching makes most students tardy since they're just relying on that tiny bit of information, and the rest was just theirs to figure out, while explicit teaching will make you more contented of the information you received.

Grammar is like life. It won't be an easy journey, but it will be worth it.

For me explicit teaching is the best way to teach grammar to engineering students. Explicit teaching involves direct contact to students and provides specific learning outcomes and skills. It provides guided instructions in basic understand in which can improve a student's grammar and English communicative skills by repetition, practice, and hands on activities.

There are 3 other ways of teaching. Teaching grammar:

    1. Auditorially
    2. Visually
    3. Kinesthetically

Auditory learners are those who learn best through hearing things. (i.e. discussing, debating, participating, explaining orally etc.)

Visual learners are those who learn through seeing things. (reading, watching, drawing, writing etc.)

Kinesthetic learners are those who learn through experiencing/doing things. (i.e. role-playing, taking field trips, brain-storming and especially doing hands-on activities.)

When you collaborate both explicit teaching and these specific ways in teaching, you will have the best results/outcomes to developing grammar skills, and would surely improve one student's English grammar and communicative skills.

How an English professor should teaches grammar to an engineering student? As an engineering student, English professors must have strategies in order for us engineering students to learn the English grammar. One of these strategies is the communicative task. Communicative task helps the students to learn the English grammar the same way as they learn their grammar in their mother tongue. Through these students will acquire the English language more efficiently because they absorb English grammar rules as they heard, read and use it in their communication activities. Another strategy is the explicit teaching of vocabulary where the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting. Also in explicit teaching, students make their reflection and review the English grammar in order for them to fully understand it.

  79. Teaching grammar to students is really a hard task. Sometimes when a student was corrected by his/her professor, he/she could misinterpret it. So the teacher would be in pressure on how to teach a student in an easy way until it will put on the student's mind the thing that was corrected by his/her professor. Grammar is very important in a communication for the reason that it can make the interaction smooth because when your grammatically wrong the thought of what you tell would probably changed.

In the article it is really obvious that the author tells us on how a professor teach grammar to the students. Here, the professor should be an open-minded teacher for him to make the task simple. The professor should be sociable to the students 'cause it can help them improve their English grammar. When a professor is sociable enough, the student will train in speak in a correct grammar. He should make a policy that during his class the students should talk in English and when the time that the grammar is wrong, that's the time the teacher will correct it.

For me, explicit way of teaching is better than implicit cause it can make the mind of the students work more 'cause they will know the major topic teacher had given. They will think deeper on what they think and that makes explicit way of teaching better than implicit.

Teaching us by both explicit and implicit teaching of grammar,
would be essential for us to fully use grammar correctly. Explicit teaching of grammar means giving us a clear outline and explanations for us to learn easily, while implicit teaching of grammar simply presents the information, but it gives us a chance to enhance our critical thinking and logic skills.

Grammar is not as easy as you think. There are certain rules which needs further explanation for better understanding. Thus , making explicit teaching better than Implicit teaching.

The teaching strategy of a teacher or a professor is a very big factor to the students' learning. If one will use explicit teaching as his strategy , it will be more understood, and there will be less complications for it gives students elaborated and clearer explanations. Considering the fact that not all students are good enough in making their own conceptual views, explicit teaching is more on giving informations making it more effective .

We have teachers who use implicit teaching as their teaching method. It is a struggle on the students' part where the main concept is just given and it is up to you to discover the different sub-topics of the lesson. This is the negative part of the implicit teaching, students have a hard time in understanding the problem.

Based on the text, you can conclude that it is way much better to learn from an explicit teaching method. But in the end, it is still the teacher or professor who will decide on what kind of teaching strategy will he use for it will be him who will know what kind of method will be best for the different kinds of students.

Communicative task is the proper way to instruct grammar to students.Through this technique of teaching, like discussion of examples, a topic will be vastly discussed.

About the explicit and implicit teaching, it is unevitable that one way or other someone, somehow may have the advantage depending on his capacity of understanding and imagining. I agree that explicit teaching is way better than the other because everything will be served properly and explained clearly unlike implicit teaching, you must exert more effort on understanding because you must conceptualize on your own. That maybe is the advantage of explicit teaching since concepts are clear while implicit may result to misconceptions and confusion on the part of the learner.

Though one advances from the other, both are still effective way of teaching but the test on how effective such technique depends on learner. So, its better for teachers use a technique where both sides will get their benefit.

  89. Teaching grammar to an individual or group of people isn't easy. There are a lot of things you should consider in order to deliver it appropriately. Grammar maybe difficult to practice but it depends on how an educator uses strategy to implant the right grammar to the students and communicate with them.
I think , teaching grammar explicitly is an effective way in developing one's grammar. As stated in the passage, explicit, wherein the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting. With this, the students will have a clear and broad thoughts about it because the ideas, knowledge already internalized to the minds of the students. They will be never hesitate or confused for there are only one thought existing on their minds, the ideas given by their instructor. Unlike in implicit way of teaching grammar, the students are able to form their own conclusions and points of view that would set their minds apart from the proper one.

According to the passage and the supporting research sited, it was clearly stated and proved that explicit type of teaching was the effective type of teaching for adults with the age ranging from 21-36 years old. I can also agree to that kind of method, because primarily, I have encountered teachers which uses the other method which is the implicit type. The results that I made from that experience was bad. It was very for me to understand the instructions given to us. Though I can understand where the teacher is coming from, I am also rebellious to her method because I wasted most of my time, time that was intended to let us do the work, just from trying to understand her instructions. If she had only stated her instructions clearly, I could have fared better on that work.

English is one of the things that connects everyone. Without English, communication would be harder than you imagine. So, in learning English, you must have a teacher capable enough of giving you sufficient knowledge.
Grammar is an important part of language. It gives the sense in our communication. And how do we learn grammar, of course by using it. Many experts have different views of grammar, but they only intend to point out one thing, that grammar is the one that completes language. Grammar can affect the understanding of others. Switching of words, or even punctuation marks, can mean another thing.
Now, in learning vocabulary, another factor is on how we learn vocabulary. According to the passage, explicit teaching is better than implicit. The passage actually is kind of bias, it only points out the bad side of implicit teaching. Now, implicit teaching can also help us become better at vocabulary and grammar. As to implicit teaching, we are being taught how to think critically. Students as we are, we tend to jump into conclusions without reading details. And in implicit teaching, we learn how to gather details to form them into facts and information. But it's better to be safe than sorry, that's why it's preferable to use explicit teaching when you really want to learn about grammar and vocabulary.
The main point here is that teaching grammar is not an easy job. We all have our different methods, but what's important is we learn from what we teach. English is just an easy thing to teach and so is grammar, but wouldn't it be easier if we are learning on the job? I mean, if we use English, even in our own little conversations, wouldn't it be easier to understand grammar? Think about it.

A philosopher once said, 'Half of good philosophy is good grammar.'

It is well indeed that teaching grammar is not an easy task. You need an extra effort to gain the perfectness of having a good grammar and vocabulary. In engineering students it is very applicable for us to have an explicit learning rather than implicit because according to the text itself in explicit teaching of vocabulary, the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting therefore in short it is the greatest way to gain a clearer understanding and categorizing what aspects will improve .

Through this teaching technique, students will absolutely able to understand and to learn easily. Because there are times where student are also keen when it comes to the styles, techniques and strategies of a certain professor. It will always matter.

Grammar is one of the most important things in learning a certain language but then learning grammar and teaching grammar are two different kinds of things. Some of us would have a hard time learning the English language which is not truly our native language. Students should then understand English in a way that they are able to easily learn the vocabulary through the help of their teachers. By doing this, students are then able to understand English clearly and understandably without problem.
With these, Professors are then expected to teach grammar to students wherein students are able to easily learn from it and are comfortable learning the language itself. Basically, the professors may choose between teaching the students through implicit or explicit teaching of vocabulary. Explicit teaching outlines the goals and explains the skills and information structures while implicit teaching does not explain the goals and make explanations overtly. In explicit teaching, students are then expected to make their own conclusions and conceptual structures. So in layman’s term, some students may have a difficult time learning grammar or English through explicit teaching unlike explicit teaching that outlines and explains the information. Wouldn’t it be easier to teach grammar to students the easy way wherein they are comfortable to learn in a way that is suitable for their desire to learn English grammar.
So basically, I would prefer teaching students through explicit teaching. It is because students like me tend to understand things in a simple way. Why make things complicated when professors could just teach grammar easily. Through explicit teaching, students would not have a hard time learning as well as the professor teaching grammar or vocabulary to the students. It would lessen the time needed for us students to digest the information because it is already outlined and summarized.

  94. Grammar is one of the most difficult aspects of language to teach well. But it is very important to us specially in English grammar for communicating properly and in other academic environment.

In learning grammar, we should know our skills and capabilities in order to us to gain clearer understanding. I agree that the best way in teaching is explicit rather than implicit teaching. It is because it offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures that every student can understood easily.Explicit orders are easy to carry out and the instructions are easy to follow.More, we can easily use it in our daily life. By this way, explicit is better than implicit.

Also, the instructor must be good at this, because he/she brings what we become.

Grammar is important in English teaching. It is also the key for you to be able to be confident enough to face the world. And I agree to the explicit teaching to the students because students may be able to understand the lesson well, clearly and easily. So, in general, explicit teaching is best prescribed.

All of us are required to follow certain rules and guidelines in the daily tasks of our lives, and the same goes for English. English has a wide range of sets of guidelines and rules that should be implemented, called grammar. From each word it is composed up to the very last punctuation mark, there is a certain syntax, formation and rules that should be followed.

Now the question is: "How should one teach grammar?", especially to engineering students.

Engineering students are students that practice their analytical thinking, their ability to analyze and solve problems precisely and efficiently. It is stated in the text that, in implicit teaching the instructor simply presents the information or problem to the students and allows the students to make their own conceptual structures and assimilate the information in the way that makes the most sense to them. Therefore, implicit teaching is more efficient than explicit teaching for this kind of students. It is a good way of training for them. In addition to this, after the instructor allowed the students to find their own way, he should still bring the light that will make the path clearer and brighter for the students to go on. The instructor should further discuss and clarify the conclusions of the students so that an interactive learning between the two may be established.

In this world, for you to be able to stand firmly, you should have first a great foundation. This foundation I'm referring to is how strong your feet are. The greater the foundation, the stronger you stand and more confidence you have to your self. This thing are done at school, on how you learn things. That's why the interaction between the students and the teacher are very much important when learning. Teaching should be considered on how the students grow. Students' thinking really depends on the teacher. It is because teacher molds the students.

In teaching grammar, which is not easy, explicit way is needed. Teaching explicitly to students may may help them understand and learn things easily and clearly. It is a technique on how the imparting and outpouring of knowledge become more effective.

I also believe that communicative task is appropriate in teaching grammar. In this task, students can learn grammar and also enhance their communicative skills. In this strategy, learning becomes faster as the teacher explains the structure of the examples (as we all know, students primarily depend on samples given by the teacher).

On the other hand, either of the strategies may be a good tool in teaching grammar. Explicit gives an organize thought while implicit practices the students analytic skills.

For me, the more effective way of teaching is the explicit way. I think most of the students want this kind of teaching because it gives less stress compared to implicit. Every idea given by the teacher is well-organized. With this, students could easily understand and memorize things.

But then, learning doesn't only depend on the teacher's strategy but also with the students' willingness to learn.

With the right strategy plus students' eagerness, we can achieve learning.

In learning English, our common obstacle is learning grammar and for me, there are two major factors that affect the learning of a student in grammar.

First is the student itself. How can a student learn grammar if even he/she doesn’t want to? Learning grammar isn’t possible to students who don’t have any interest about it. We must make it serious because sometimes, we can’t blame our teachers if we don’t understand the lesson especially if the topic is about grammar.

Second are the teachers but I said, not always. I can say this based on my experience in learning English grammar in high school. From second year to third year, I experienced difficulty in understanding our English teacher. She has the habit of “copy-paste”, what is written on the book is similar in her visual aid word by word. She is not organized and every after class, we are confused and I and my classmates often say “unsa daw?”, “wala ko kasabot.”, “unsa mani si ma’am oy”, “gi-unsa man ni?”. During the releasing of report cards, I really don’t expect a higher grade in English.

During my fourth year in high school, I was totally relieved. I was happy because my English teacher is very good. I always understand all of her lessons. Not like to our previous year’s English class, we always says “Hawda jud ni ma’am oy!”. The result of my exams is higher compared to my scores in second year and in third year. When I received my report card during graduation day, I was really happy because it was my first time to have a very high grade in English and I said "THANK YOU MA'AM!".

The text is about strategies in teaching grammar. The author vividly explained the different strategies in teaching it. Grammar is the study structural relationships in language or in a language, this includes pronunciation, meaning, and linguistic history. Therefore teaching grammar is not an easy task.

Explicit teaching of vocabulary is better than implicit teaching,as what the text stated and as a student I do agree with this. Studying grammar is difficult to understand especially when the thought is not clearly conveyed and poorly taught by the teacher. According to the text "in explicit teaching of vocabulary, the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting", which makes explicit teaching better than implicit teaching. This would be the best way to make the student more knowledgeable enough about the given topic.

The text tackles about how an English instructor should teach grammar. From its title alone, the author is looking for strategies on how to teach grammar efficiently to students whose minds were bombarded with their majors, which are the science and math.

Well in my own perspective, explicit teaching of vocabulary is better than implicit teaching. By implicit instruction, we refer to a type of teaching where the instructor does not outline such goals or make his/her explanations thoroughly, but rather simply presents an information and allows the students to analyze it by their own. As a result, their knowledge is dependent on their capability of analyzing. In times of misinterpretation about a certain information, corrections and/or appropriate analysis cannot be relayed to them. Whereas in explicit teaching, the instructors really give explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting.

English Grammar is a very delicate topic which a teacher must teach through communicative tasks. Teaching them through a wide array of examples and proper mentoring about the grammar and proper use of it.

In learning the proper English Grammar, we only need to analyze the proper use of the tenses in each sentences that would go well with the question that you are trying to explain. We are not the native speakers of English, making a barrier for us to freely express ourselves in explanations. The Educational quality of the teacher's teaching about grammar could be measured depending on the abilities developed by the students when explanations are needed. nExplicit teaching is effective in a way that it can be used by teachers for the students to learn efficiently.

Grammar is a very important thing in sentences. You may construct a sentence but some are hard to understand. Teaching grammar on students, the instructor must explain the basic informations on what should they put on the sentence to make it grammatically correct. The instructor should also know the capability of the learning of the students for him to guide them correctly. I agree that explicit teaching can be a more effective style in teaching engineering students because "the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting". In other words, instructors clearly explains so it will not be confusing. Teaching grammar is not an easy task.

When you ask a teacher about grammar, he will surely answer it for that is what he teaches. When you ask a businessman the same thing, he will certainly give the response for that is how they make business. When you ask a doctor, he will definitely answer back with no hesitation for thy use that in saving lives. But, when you ask an engineer on the concept of idiomatic expressions and how they are used, some be able to answer back, but majority lacks the guts.

That is why it will really take much effort for a professor to teach grammar to engineering students. For me, a grammar professor to engineering students must possess the following:

    1. He must be encouraging through telling his engineering students the importance of grammar in the field where they want to be good at and the benefits of learning grammar the right way.
    2. He must possess good sense of humor. Engineering students as we are, we prefer to have difficult subjects with teachers who makes his classes lively than to have easy subjects but boring and tiresome classes.
    3. He must be neat and confident in everything that he does. Who would love to look and listen to a teacher who does not look that fresh and pleasant? Who would want to have a teacher who is unsure of what he says in class?

These are the important things that a professor teaching grammar to engineering students must do to teach them well.

  108. Teaching is not an easy task especially if you are teaching engineering students. Not all students in engineering have a perfect grammar.Though they are not that good, they are also practicing a proper grammar because they are also using their analytical thinking to solve and understand the given problems. Therefore if someone teaches English grammar he/she must have long patience. Another important thing is to have their proper communication and their focus on the subject and students. Communication between the student and the professor must be interconnected.

It is also right that explicit is far way to convincing for students to learn because as it was written in the article it gives an outline what are the goals in the learning that will be done. If the students know about this they would be eager to learn about our modern grammar. Though explicit is a better way in teaching grammar implicit is also good. It makes the mind of a person think deeply. It challenges our brain to analyze and have our own conception about grammar or about a subject.

When someone makes a mistakes about having a wrong grammar the professor will surely correct it in his/her own way. However there are times that if teachers correct a student, the student will misinterpret it. If this will happen one should be open-minded and just accept that we have mistakes. Those mistakes must be taken positively and take it as a challenge to yourself. We're still far in learning our modern grammar which means we have more mistakes to make but more learnings to gain.

One of the most important thing that an engineering student should learn is how to write grammars correctly. According to the teachers I've encountered since elementary, most of the students who really loves math has a poor foundation in English or do not really know how to make the sentences rightly because they are just focusing only in numbers, do not have an interest with the subject or others have really a hard time to understand it.

As a teacher like Sir Sajed Ingilan who is teaching an English subject, he must really use an effective learning technique so that the students may listen and easily catch-up their attentions to the topics that the professor wants to express or deliver to the students. Through explicit teaching, it will be really easy to bear it clearly the information, structures and constructs of the sentences of the grammar.

Students must be inspired that English is also a vital part in our lives especially in communicating with other persons. This quote will tell us that Mathematics and English are just related to each other.
"The way that I approached numbers, think about them, the same as for language as well-acquiring vocabulary, understanding the grammar, the structures of languages, the rhythm, the music and so-on - these things obviously evolved." -Daniel Tammet

  111. Grammar, especially on a language you did not grow in, can be tricky to learn. Not just it's sometimes boring to learn but also, it has so many rules and concepts that you can be confused. Thus, there is no easier way to learn it but to apply it.

In teaching through communicative task, you use the rules/concepts on the examples you give and after the students have grasp the ideas, you will expound on the topic and give more examples. So, concepts are easier to understand for it was used before it was introduced.

Implicit teaching calls for more effort on the students part for they are doing all the "figuring out" (which is something students don't want to do. While in explicit teaching, the teacher presents the outline and the concepts in an understandable way, freeing the thinking load from the students.

Students have different way of thinking hence, it calls for different strategies. And these strategies varies from teacher to teacher and class to class.

  112. Grammar plays a vital role to the teaching and learning of languages. It is considered as one of the most difficult aspects in learning yet nobody actually learns grammar to learn his/her own mother tongue. It is a natural occurrence that we learn our own language and start speaking through people that speaks around us. But the question remains: What is grammar? Grammar is the structural foundation of our ability to express ourselves. The more we are aware of how it works, the more we can monitor the meaning and effectiveness of the way we and others use language. It can help foster precision, detect ambiguity, and exploit the richness of expression available in English. And it can help everyone--not only teachers of English, but a teacher of anything, for all teaching is ultimately a matter of getting to grips with meaning.(Crystal, "In Word and Deed," TES Teacher, April 30, 2004)

Teaching grammar could be done in various ways, but how should one teach grammar? In my own perspective, grammar should be taught in a communicative way so that an individual could comprehend it easily. In this way, learning is done easier and it is well versed in a climate wherein the learners are to interact with each other, sharing ideas and having moments.

In accordance to my opinion, I believe that explicit method is way better than implicit method in teaching vocabulary. Explicit teaching is more effective because of the fact that it gives an opportunity for the learner to come up with understanding the main idea first while implicit teaching does not give any explanations and further information. For instance, two teachers gave the same project to two classes. One just gave information through instructions in words while the other explained clearly what the project is all about. We could probably expect more that the class given the project with explanations can do better because of the proper instructions and elaboration. This is the reason why explicit teaching is more efficient than implicit teaching.

As for someone who travels down the road of being an educator, it’s difficult to teach grammar but considering on how you let your students understand the lesson is what matters the most and this is how should one teach grammar.

These subjects requires prior knowledge especially in numbers and problem solving. You have to analyze and comprehend so that you can find the answer. Just like in English subject, grammar takes a big part in learning English.

Correct grammar enables us to make used of communication or expressing ourselves. Explicit teaching is much better than implicit. Explicit teaching encourages the students to think and understand words more deeply. The students would be interested in searching and learning simplified words with their simple meanings.

As I have experienced in my elementary years, when a pupil got a mistake in their grammars the teacher helps them to make it correct. Though learning English is not easy, but it challenges the students to think deeply and be conscious.

There are many ways on how to teach grammar. Implicit and explicit are two of those. For me as a student, explicit is a better way on how instructors should teach vocabulary to the students because in this way the words are stated clearly, in detail, and leaving no room for confusions or doubt rather than implicit which makes the students understand the words harder.

I also approve in communicative task as how one should teach grammar because in this way the chance of retainment of the subject or lesson in the learners' mind is greater. But it depends on what task the instructor would give that makes the students learn in most effective way.

In addition, being effective instructor depends on how they deliver their lesson (specifically grammar) to their students. Either implicit or explicit way of teaching if the instructor has a good relationship with his student, they can learn from one another. The most important thing is that we learn no matter what strategy it may be.

  116. I think both explicit and implicit should be implemented in teaching grammar simply because one should co-exist with the other and should weave both explicit and implicit practices into relevant, meaningful instruction. We cannot assume that the two approaches, in isolation, are singularly effective. Though a study had been conducted, the effectiveness of a method will always vary on the students. Their foundation of grammar and early formative knowledge about the English language should also be considered upon choosing a method of teaching.

Saying that the explicit method alone could address each student's learning capabilities and could harness effective teaching is outrageous. One should not close a door when it comes to learning. The most effective way of teaching will always go back to how descriptive (explicit) and prescriptive (implicit) the method had been. Therefore learning grammar, which is basically full of rules and structure should be both explicit and implicit.

  117. Grammar is a central to the teaching and learning of language. It is important because it is the language that makes it possible for us to talk about language. It teaches us how to build sentences, example, about the types of words that we use and when we should use them. Some students associates with errors and correctness. When they read an article, it is important to pay attention to how sentences are constructed. They assume that students will absorb grammar rules as they hear, read and use the language in communication activities. Instructions using this model teach students the grammar they need to know to accomplish defined communication tasks.

The best way to teach the students is through explicit teaching because it involves modeling skills and behaviors and modeling skills. It also involves the teacher thinking at loud when working through problems and demonstration processes for students. and it's purpose is useful for introducing topics and specific skills.

How one should teach proper grammar, you ask. Grammar is a central way of teaching and learning a language. Teaching grammar is not an easy task. In fact, it is one of the hardest aspects to teach to the students. Have you secretly laughed at a person who did not use the proper usage of grammar? I know we all did, at some point. Some did not even hide their reactions. But as the saying goes, nobody’s perfect. We all make mistakes. Here’s where our instructors enter the scene. They are the ones who will correct our errors.

In the article, there are two ways of teaching proper grammar, implicit and explicit. But the question is “Which is better between implicit and explicit teaching of vocabulary?” . Explicit refers to a conscious knowledge of grammatical forms and their meaning while implicit refers to the knowledge of a language that is typically manifested in some form of naturally occurring language behavior such as conversation. The author clearly stated that he is in favor in the explicit teaching of vocabulary. I, on the other hand, am in favor of the two. I think using both of the teaching ways will help us be more knowledgeable. I think that if we use both, the advantages of using the other will patch up the disadvantages of the remaining. But overall, this will just depend on the student. Whether he’s strong-willed and determined enough in learning.

  119. “To master something, you need to spend 10,000 hours doing it.” This concept was introduced in Malcom Gladwell’s book about the most famous and successful personalities. Pretty same as we learn grammar, it takes time to fully grasp its correct uses and content, in short we master it's art.

In my own opinion, having a different language is a large hindrance in learning another language. We can't fully learn a foreign grammar such as English through the help of our teachers unless they are native speakers of this language. In the meanwhile, English teachers here in the Philippines are known to be good speakers, that's why they play a large role in the students. Learning grammar can be efficient through teacher to student interaction and letting them know the mistakes from their own sentences. I find learning grammar as a gradual process, we can't be such good for a sudden. It requires time and effort in order to be good, but still there are effective ways of teaching that matter.

I agree with the explicit teaching on grammar is better than implicit. It's because not all of us are that good, patient and interested to learn from our own and make own conclusions. I know that would be great in that way, but mostly in our case, it's better that we are being guided and oriented how things are done.

Being an engineering student, learning and mastering grammar is one of the best weapon we can use to succeed on our careers. In order to achieve it, the professor should know what is he talking about to his students, to get easily their attention. I believe that a professor exposed to lots of seminars and forums is the best educator to have because it does mean that he is equipped enough to face various faces of students with their different attitudes.

I do agree with those texts mentioned above that using communicative task and explicit teaching are effective enough to teach students. With these techniques, the students for sure, will easily get the point on what the professor wants to say because it will let the students to think deeper on how words being used and what should be the rules to follow. Nowadays, most of the students prefer actual demonstration in learning like setting examples rather than letting the students read the books alone.

Students have different way of thinking but if the professor knows to handle those differences, he'll surely be able to get his student's attention. He should apply different approaches to each class or student, creatively determine which teaching techniques or procedure is effective. It is important to draw the student's attention to the lesson. Motivate them to participate in class discussions and other activities. Adopt activities according to their levels and needs. It wont help if everything is provided. Let them think, give them opportunity to develop their skills and inspire creativity. Support the student's attempt to understand and express constructive criticism. The author stated and explained that explicit is better than implicit teaching. Explicit teaching is better to students because it gives the students more knowledge and more understanding to what they are presenting to while implicit teaching just make the students to conclude and make them to think hard to find the answer or the fact for what they are referring to.

Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach well.

Many people, including language teachers, hear the word "grammar" and think of a fixed set of word forms and rules of usage. They associate "good" grammar with the prestige forms of the language, such as those used in writing and in formal oral presentations, and "bad" or "no" grammar with the language used in everyday conversation or used by speakers of nonprestige forms.

English teachers like sir Sadjed who teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them.Who can produce correct forms on exercises and tests, but consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context.

Language teachers who adopt this definition focus on grammar as a set of forms and rules. They teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drilling students on them. This results in bored, disaffected students who can produce correct forms on exercises and tests, but consistently make errors when they try to use the language in context.

Other language teachers, influenced by recent theoretical work on the difference between language learning and language acquisition, tend not to teach grammar at all. Believing that children acquire their first language without overt grammar instruction, they expect students to learn their second language the same way. They assume that students will absorb grammar rules as they hear, read, and use the language in communication activities. This approach does not allow students to use one of the major tools they have as learners: their active understanding of what grammar is and how it works in the language they already know.

The communicative competence model balances these extremes. The model recognizes that overt grammar instruction helps students acquire the language more efficiently, but it incorporates grammar teaching and learning into the larger context of teaching students to use the language. Instructors using this model teach students the grammar they need to know to accomplish defined communication tasks.

Grammar is a huge factor in learning English.Correct Grammar Usage is very important for the listeners because it make the sentence more understandable. For Engineering students, the teacher must use common words because we all know that they are more on math than English.

  130. Teaching grammar to students is not an easy task because grammar is a subject that not everybody can easily understand and most of all, it is up to the teacher on hoe he/she can teach his/her students in order to understand grammar.

For me, in order the students to understand grammar, the teacher should have good and relevant examples that they can apply in their own lives and mostly, the teacher should have enough knowledge and understanding about grammar. Most of us(students) we don't usually apply grammar. we don't care about our grammar. As a conclusion... it is up to the teacher.

  131. Grammar, is where Filipinos are best, as they say. Why? It's because we are so conscious w/ what's going out from our mouth. Unlike others, who really is growing up with englishas it first language, they still say it incorrectly. Grammar is the study of the classes of words, their inflections, and their functions and relations in the sentence.

In teaching grammar, a teacher must the extent of his students. A teacher must know where or what part of grammar a student is weak of, so that he would know where and how to start. He must first strengthen the eeak part of a student, for it will serve as the foundation of his or her learning. And I agree that revealling, expressing and demonstrating grammar fully to students would help in enhancing ome in grammar. And will make a student know hownto communicate or speak in correct grammar.

  132. How should one teach grammar?

A brief and simple technique yet might be hard for some to cope up with; know the capabilities of whose the one learning the language as to how well he or she can speak or talk fluently with the said language. We are unique, just like everyone else. We all have our own standards. Some might speak very eloquent, people with the gift of silver--tongues. Those students or even muggles who knows the correct words but does not know how to utter it into sentences. And those people who really dont know anything. Specifically in conveying or speaking in English.

I am really fond of speaking in English even though there are times that I too can do wrong grammings (Lol I am just messing with you.) and speak in a language that only I know but sounds like English. Specially now that speaking in CONYO is at its fifteen minutes of fame. Yet it does not stop me in publicly speaking on what i have to say. I mean we can voice out whatever we want. Some might say that "Pa-English2x pa jud uie,! Pasosyal sad! Mali2x man gani na imong gina.pang.ingon!". (Grammar Nazis -_-) Like duh, If you really know something, and its that something you're super duper good at (or at least you know something), then let them hear of what you've got. Make their ears tingle until blood runs down their noses, not like literally, but more of like saying that you can make a statement that might give inspiration to make them hear your point. After all, this is a democratic country and we have the...(oh, where is this essay taking me?)

Where was I.. Oh, yes. As for teaching it, some instructors have the different formulas, procedures and approach into how well they can mold, develop, edify and expand their students knowledge when it comes to grammar and vocabulary. But as what I have said, you must first know the capabilities of whose learning it. In this passage, the author stated two teaching skills; the explicit and implicit. But I believe, any of the two will do. The point is, If you have self-confidence and you are willing to learn, you can do anything. You can learn all that grammar thingy even though some might say that it is one of the most difficult manner in English to learn.

We all know that grammar is very important to us in order for us to understand each other. Also grammar is one of the of the hardest part of the English subject because almost of the students having their difficulties i n making a sentence with a proper usage of grammar.

Also its depend on the teacher/professor on how he/she deliver the lesson to the students in a basic way so that the students can easily understand the topic. Some teachers make the lesson base on whats the students instabilities. I know that teaching a proper usage of grammar is a difficult task to do but if you do it with all your heart I know its very easy and simple task to do.

    sorry sir late po.

Grammar is one of the most important topic in English. It makes our communication easier to understand. But, it is difficult to understand because most of us students have difficulties in the proper usage of grammar.

A teacher must make his/her creative way of teaching grammar in-order for the students could somehow understand and learn well. Yes,it is difficult to teach grammar, but it is needed to make our speaking and writing skills much better.

So, I would prefer explicit way of teaching. It is because it would make things easier to understand. As the author stated in the article, in explicit teaching of vocabulary, the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students, and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information structures they are presenting. This will make lessons easier to learn.

  135. Nowadays people are so considerate in using grammar. People as we are especially Filipinos are so perfectionist in terms of grammar. We all know that in order for us to use grammar correctly, we should first learn the basics of English. It is true that teaching grammar is not an easy task.

One way in teaching grammar is through communicative task. This can be done through error correction, noticing of salient forms in texts, and teacher- or student-initiated attention to a language feature. It is also the task of the teacher to find ways on how to teach grammar in order for the students to understand and learn well. As what Sir Ingilan mentioned earlier that in order for the students to learn grammar , the teacher should know more about his or her students. It is also true that the teacher must find ways and make it as creative as it is so that the students can understand it.

There are two ways in teaching vocabulary. The explicit and the implicit. Based on what I've read, explicit teaching is more better than implicit. It is because in explicit teaching the instructor clearly outlines what the learning goals are for the students. It also gives clear explanations on how it is formed. Whereas in the implicit teaching, the instructor do not highlights those goals and do not make explanations clearly. They only allow students make his or her conclusion without any explanations at all. This can be a bad thing because students cannot understand well and can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations.

It was already stated in the text that explicit teaching is better than implicit teaching for explicit teaching gives the students a clearer view of the goals that the instructor aims in teaching. Not only for Engineering students but for other students as well, I personally think that explicit teaching should be used by the instructor.

The professor must be knowledgeable about correct grammar and grammar errors. Of course, what's the point of teaching students if the professor himself doesn't know about grammar, right? So when talking or teaching students, he can correct them when they commit grammar errors.

I personally think that the professor would make creative ways of teaching grammar, a good technique in honing the students' skill in talking and writing with correct grammar.

I agree to the writer's view about using explicit teaching method as a form of teaching the students. Teaching through a communicative style makes the students learn more efficiently than implicit teaching.
Implicit teaching, for most students, find it more difficult to understand because it requires them to find the fault themselves which can make them more confused over the problem. While in explicit teaching, the students are more capable of understanding the problem because it is stated directly by the teacher himself/herself.
Therefore, explicit teaching serves best in explaining learning goals because it lessens the occurence of misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the students thus, making them more effectively.

For me, speaking is the most important skill. Because we use it in our daily lives. Especially in communicating and expressing our feelings. Some of the people didn't know how to communicate, and that's a big problem. We must improve our skills in speaking so that if we meet someone, we can communicate with him/her.

    that's all :D

In teaching not only in grammar, the teacher should always consider the atmosphere of the students. What i mean is, the teacher should know first the attitudes of this students for him/her to be fit to them.I mean so that the students will have interest to listen to the teacher, or in other words, the students will like the teacher to teach them. Like we, the engineering students, we all know that we do not like strict teachers or K.J teachers.Because, engineering students can learn more and easily if teacher teaches not in serious type.
