Some Issues in English Language Teaching

How should I teach the macro skills? Oh la la la..

Theories in teaching :

a. Listening

The theory in teaching listening was not explicitly discussed, but I will just simply

present what I remembered and learned on this matter.

In real-world listening, both bottom-up and top-down processing generally occur together. The extent to which one or the other dominates depends on the listener’s familiarity with the topic and content of a text, the density of information in a text, the text type, and the listener’s purpose in listening. Thus I believe that in teaching listening, we must combine the two processes by outlining activities consisting of pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening that link bottom-up and top-down listening (Field, 1998). The pre-listening phase prepares learners for both top-down and bottom-up processing through activities involving activating prior knowledge, making predictions, and reviewing key vocabulary. The while-listening phase focuses on comprehension through exercises that require selective listening, gist listening, sequencing, etc. The post-listening phase typically involves a response to comprehension and may require students to give opinions about a topic. However, it can also include a bottom-up focus if the teacher and the listeners examine the texts or parts of the text in detail, focusing on sections that students could not follow. This may involve a microanalysis of sections of the text to enable students to recognize such features as blends, reduced words, ellipsis, and other features of spoken discourse that they were unable to process or recognize. Through these activities, successful listening among students can be attained.

b. Speaking

The mastery of speaking skills in English is a priority for many second-language or foreign-language learners. Consequently, learners often evaluate their success in language learning as well as the effectiveness of their English course on the basis of how much they feel they have improved in their spoken language proficiency. But, the question is, what are the things that we need to consider teaching listening? Tsang and Wong (2002) shared that the first is to determine what kinds of speaking skills the class will focus on. Informal needs analysis is the starting point here. Procedures for determining needs include observation of learners carrying out different kinds of communicative tasks, questionnaires, interviews, and diagnostic testing . The second issue is to identify teaching strategies to “teach” (i.e., provide opportunities for learners to acquire) each kind of talk. With this, I believe that one should teach speaking as transaction. According to Richards (1990), talk as transaction is more easily planned since current communicative materials are a rich resource of group activities, information-gap activities, and role plays that can provide a source for practicing how to use talk for sharing and obtaining information, as well as for carrying out real-world transactions. These activities include ranking, values clarification, brainstorming, and simulations. Group discussion activities can be initiated by having students work in groups to prepare a short list of controversial statements for others to think about. In this approach, talk is associated with other activities. For example, students may be engaged in hands-on activities. In this type of spoken language students and teachers usually focus on meaning or on talking their way to understanding .

c. Reading

Reading is not a simple task to teach as it involves a series of activities such as

perception, thought, and word recognition. One of the theoretical approaches that I learned in our class discussion is problem solving method.

One of the roles of the teachers is to equip students with problem solving skills they can use in their day to day interactions. In this regard, Pearson and Taylor (2002) suggested that students should acquire the necessary reading skills to help them boldly confront the challenges facing them. In this case, it is the responsibility of the teacher to guide the learner to identify specific issues to solve. Teachers must present issues wherein the students can relate, and will use their problem solving skills. I can still recall when Dr. Catherine M. Roble gave us activities on how to solve a crime by just reading the situations given to us. We read, evaluate the situations, and judge, and come up with a solution on how to solve the problem at hand.

Moreover, the teacher should guide them on how to use reading skills to solve specific problems. He can either choose for them the appropriate topic and the best texts to read in order to get the required information. For instance, when teaching reading skills, a teacher can decide to ask learners to do a research on a selected topic from a large volume of text such as encyclopedia. If the learners respond to the question correctly, then it means that the learning objectives are achieved.

This particular theoretical approach is indeed helpful since it is very useful in their daily transactions, and in life in general.

d. Writing

“A simplistic view of writing would assume that written language is simply the graphic representation of spoken language…” (Brown, 2001:335). Writing is more complex than this; hence writing pedagogy is important, as Brown states by claiming that writing is “as different from speaking as swimming is from walking” .This is supported and developed by Hedge, who states that writing is more than producing accurate and complete sentences and phrases. She states that writing is about guiding students to: “produce whole pieces of communication, to link and develop information, ideas, or arguments for a particular reader or a group of readers…”

With this, I believe that a teacher should teach writing using the genre approach (Hylands, 2004). The ideas started in Australia and are now prominent in English teaching in Australia, New Zealand and countries nearby. This approach-model is situated away from naturalistic ways of learning language, theory-wise. It is more of a functionalistic approach; “genre based approaches to writing are based on a functional model of language; that is, a theoretical perspective that emphasizes the social constructedness of language” (Knapp & Watkins, 2005:9).

In genre approach, text is seen as a social process, which is further supported by Unger and Fleishman, who bring up a quote from Sperling and Freedman: "We now see writing not just as a process taking place inside an author’s head, but as a collaborative act influenced by complex and interrelated social factors" (2004: 90). The proponents of this theory often claim that genre-writing is the most efficient and modern way of teaching writing, since it creates awareness of both culture and ways of writing. The structure of a text is partly linked to the culture it is produced in; “…genre teaching as a means of helping learners to gain access to the dominant genres of our culture…” (Hyland, 2004:18). Besides this, the genre approach usually is presented with advantages such as being systematic, empowering and consciousness-raising. It is systematic since it “incorporates both discourse and contextual aspects of language use” (Hyland, 2004:12) and makes the student aware of audience, textual variation and structuring of writing.

The teaching is therefore “based on the ways language is actually used”. It is not just a matter of training students in reproducing forms of texts, but offering students “a way of seeing how different texts are created in distinct and recognizable ways in terms of their purpose, audience and message.

e. Viewing

Viewing is one of the skills that a student must develop, and enhance. But the question is

how to teach this skill? I believe that discipline-centered approach must be observed in this case. To get the attention of the students, the teacher must give viewing activities related to the field of the students. For example, if you are teaching English to Engineering students, the teachers must have look for films in the field of Engineering. But the teacher must still take into consideration the communication functions that students must develop in order not to deviate from the goal in language learning. This activity then creates awareness on their discipline, and at the same time developing the viewing skill.

The theories discussed are of paramount importance in teaching effectively the skills

namely : listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing.

In teaching listening, we must combine the two processes, bottom-up and top-down, as shared by Field (1998) by outlining activities consisting of pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening that link bottom-up and top-down listening.

In teaching speaking, one must carry out this skill as a transaction (Richards, 1990). Talk as transaction is more easily planned since current communicative materials are a rich resource of group activities, information-gap activities, and role plays that can provide a source for practicing how to use talk for sharing and obtaining information, as well as for carrying out real-world transactions.

In teaching reading, problem solving method should be one of the options to use ( Pearson and Taylor, 2002). Students should acquire the necessary reading skills to help them boldly confront the challenges facing them. In this case, it is the responsibility of the teacher to guide the learner to identify specific issues to solve . Teachers must present issues wherein the students can relate, and will use their problem solving skills.

In teaching writing, a teacher should teach it using the genre approach (Hylands, 2004). The teaching is based on the ways language is actually used. It is not just a matter of training students in reproducing forms of texts, but offering students “a way of seeing how different texts are created in distinct and recognizable ways in terms of their purpose, audience and message.

In teaching viewing, discipline-centered approach must be observed in this case. To get the attention of the students, the teacher must give viewing activities related to the field of the students. But the teacher must still take into consideration the communication functions that students must develop in order not to deviate from the goal in language learning.

With all these theories, I believe that one must teach a skill by taking into account the language and communication functions that students need to use in their daily transactions and professional lives. The teacher must use authentic materials representing how people typically use language. In teaching these skills, I believe that it is more than just learning the grammar or linguistic structure, instead, it focuses on context and audience. In this manner, the teachers will look beyond content, and composing process to better understand language patterns.

  1. All of them are important to teach in ENGLISH 1,
We have different weaknesses in learning ENGLISH subject..
and for me I will choose SPEAKING because I'm not good at
    it.
in effective communication is the main aim of every foreign language learner. It can occur in two ways: written and oral, both of which require a special set of skills, adapted to a given situation and to a specific person.
It seems that the oral use appears to be more problematic for the majority of students, for it is closely connected with an internal uneasiness that appears during the personal interaction face-to-face. However, it can quite effectively be taken care of by improving English speaking skills.
In every activity I'm shy sometimes to hands-up to answer
because I get easily nervous if my English grammar are correct,
some of my fellow students I have been encounter this problem too.

I hope this comment can inform you about my complaint :)

  2. All that is written above are all important but for me the skill should be given emphasis in English 1 is LISTENING skill, because when you listen carefully you can easily understand the thought without even realizing it. It gives you good listening skill that may affect all the skills written above, when you listen carefully you can avoid speaking such nonsense things with that it can help your thinking skills. if you're listening even if you don't read you can still understand because what you just heard will stick to your mind easily and you just have to remember. When you listen you don't need to take note or write because when you listen you can easily remember what your teacher just tackle in class, if you just write and write and you don't listen and you don't understand that doesn't even count. When it comes to viewing without listening you can't easily remember the words that is written because not every person has a good graphical memory that can help them recall back the things that they have seen before and bring it back again.
That's how LISTENING skill is important to each and every person in this world it really affects all the skills that a person has.

  4. For me its speaking because the best way to teach is to speak.Speak to your students, make conversations with them. You can't teach by just staring at your students in the whole time of the class. In speaking, you are using your voice as an instrument to your students so that they can learn and understand what are the lesson that you will gonna be tackling with.Your students cannot listen specially when your are not speaking. You cannot make commands and directions when your are not speaking.Good conversations leads to good relationships with your students.

  5. All of this theories are important in English Language Teaching. It is because to enhance all the skills of students in English.
It is a big help for all the students who find it difficult to speak in English and also in essay writing.
This theories could also help us in our future lives when we are ready to face the real world like finding a job.
Lastly, it could enhance and harness our speaking in English with full of confidence because we already knew this theories and properly applied it to ourselves.
We all knew that speaking English is hard, but if we pursue and strive hard to be a good one, it could be a great achievement. And that is my challenge to myself. :)))

That would be all Sir. :) Bless you po.

  7. Those genre are very essential when it comes to English Teaching. All of us has our capabilities and
vulnerability when it comes to listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. But for me, I would choose "SPEAKING".

In my own perception, "SPEAKING" is the most basic medium of communication by humans. It helps us to communicate our thoughts, ideas, suggestions and comments. Through "SPEAKING", it enables us to have fair and justified decisions at various levels of our society. I can't deny the fact that I'm not that fluent in "English Speaking". There were times that I want to raise my hand to participate, but I doubt if my grammar is CORRECT or INCORRECT. I'm afraid of being embarrassed, because of my incorrect grammar. I'm still looking forward to improve my Communication Skills. I do really hope Sir, that I can come up with you to help me to cope up to this kind of situation I have...

    Have a wonderful day SIR!

For my own prespective the skills in English that gives us emphasis to the students in the class are writing and speaking....
I can say writng emphasis in that because in my observation during in my past school years until now that we all know that all students know how to write but some writngs are not grammatically correct . Maybe there are some students know but there are students found difficult in making grammatically sentence.
I can say , speaking is emohasis also because some students have opinion but they cannot deliver it well using english language .No Matter how the teacher is very good to teach to the students, btut if the student dont try their best to know. It will never change the situation.

Based on my observation, outside or inside in our country. The speaking and writing must emphasis because being an industrialized country we need the ability of being versatile because speaking and writing is a form of communication that we need to improve and improve because there are several mistakes that we never try to focus and we just neglect about it. Both writing and speaking must be emphasize and equally study. There are some students, not only students but also ordinary people and there are times also the teacher commit mistakes when speaking and writing.

For me,the most important skill that we, students should developed is our speaking or communication skill. We could further express our thoughts if we know how to speak fluently, not just on our own language but also the universal one.It is commonly the problem of the students. It could not developed easily but through mingling and communicating with other people it could somehow help to enhance that skill.

As I read the text it drag me all over for i know that those statements are totally correct. From the beginning up to the end. It clearly stated that those 5 teaching skills namely Reading, Writing, Speaking, listening and viewing has a great impact to every individual. But for my opinion I can only say that in the world of teaching Speaking should be the utilize and give emphasis for it is a requirement to established a good communication. Each of us can be mold by speaking cause we're free to open up those things that we learned after the class, we can explain well based on the things that we read and see. in other words, speaking is powerful among the 5 teaching skills.

In our class, I've observed that we SPEAKS a lot through asking and clarifying, and in that case i can say that the class is covered by talking :))

These theories in teaching are important and truly need to teach in English. But for me I choose to teach is SPEAKING. Because in reality many Filipinos are not good and fluent in speaking English language. If teachers teach this genre, we Filipino could improve our way of speaking English and if that happen we will be globally competitive in the field of work. Because we all know that English language is the universal language. Honestly, i cant deny that I'm also not good in speaking English language. And there were times that i didn't raised my hand if there were any questions about English because i am afraid if my grammar is wrong and my classmates laugh at me.
That's why i want that English teacher should focused in teaching the students on how to speak English language.

It helps us in communicating in school,at home and it helps us to give suggestion's and comment's in our own. Teachers should have a lot of style in teaching,
that would be suitable in their students. But the question
is, What is the best way/style?

    Reading,Writing,Listening,Viewing,Speaking are the styles
of teaching. For me, Viewing is the best way. As a Visual/Non-verbal type of person. I tend to watch TV news rather than reading News Papers. I can easily cope with the lessons when the teacher provide a visual aid, so that I can also visualize what was our lessons all about. But what about the others? Others have their own specialization in their learning styles like the Visual/Verbal, Auditory and the Tactile. Every people have a different style of learning.
Therefore, all of the ways/styles are the best.

  17. It depends on the student on how to analyze it and the way to learn the lessons. Reading, Writing, Listening, Viewing, Speaking are all important.Learning Language is not easy unless you are an intelligent person and you can easily understand the lessons! All of the said ways are important in order to learn the language being taught but both "Listening and Speaking" are the best ways in order to learn correct way of language being thought. "Listening" is one of the best ways of teaching language because you cannot learn if you don't listen and remember hearing and listening is different! Hearing is what you hear while Listening is what hear too but at the same time, understanding it! Speaking is one of the best way of teaching language too! Why? If you do not speak, no one can listen to you. Speaking is essential too because the students depend on what the teacher speaks! For example, we, the people, speak what other people speak of. It depends on the student if he/she strives in studying and to learn more about the language, ENGLISH.

The theories in teaching that are written above namely listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing are important skills that must be taught in English. For me the skill that should be given emphasis in English I and should be taught are SPEAKING and READING. First SPEAKING why? because it is the instrument to communicate with other people. I admit me myself is not so very good or not fluent in speaking English. So one of the skills that must be given emphasis is speaking to be competitive globally in the world of work. Second is READING.In reading we can discover new things and we can get information. Many students are poor in READING FOR COMPREHENSION including me. It is understanding meaning in a text. It is so hard especially if the words are so unfamiliar in our lexicon. So SPEAKING AND READING must be given emphasis and should be taught in English I.

  20. The skill should be given emphasis to the English 1 or to the class are speaking....

Speaking is the action of conveying information or expressing one's thoughts and felling in spoken language. Many of the students feel that speaking in a new language is harder than reading, writing, or listening because when you speak, you cannot edit and revise what you wish, as you can if you are writing. Although speaking is totally natural in this world but it is the skill should be given emphasis in English 1.

  21. For me LISTENING skill is important because it helps us learn and understand different things. Usually, a person who listens properly is able to react appropriately to a particular situation or towards a particular person.

Listening is important because you can learn new information through listening and it is a virtue, something that not everyone has, it gives you an insight of other persons thoughts and their behaviour, and which in turn makes dealing easy with them. Some times just by listening you can help people reason with themselves and deal better with their emotions. And the most important of all it gives you other persons perspective of the problem or the situation.

Listening skills allow one to make sense of and understand what another person is saying. In other words, listening skills allow you to understand what someone is "talking about".And by listening, more than talking, you will learn much more.

For me I choose LISTENING, because you can easily understand what the instructor discussed and also you can analyzed the lessons if you are listening well.
Also READING is important to us,because if you read more books it will enhance your mind, intelligence, thinking skills, and etc. and you can easily analyzed the main idea of the sentence and the story of the book that you read.
LISTENING and READING are very important to us , if you take these into your mind they are big advantages to your studies.

What I learned from my writing experience:
I must strive to learn to write well since writing is an indispensable form of communication.

What would I do differently to face situation in the future:

-- for me i would rather choose LISTENING while WRITING ,, because by listening and writing because by listening you can take down notes and you will remember some important points and the said topic, while in writing you can easily scan or skim the said topic, and also you can easily study where you are and earn some stock knowledge about the said topics.

  27. All those styles written in the article are connected to one another. We listen, read and view so that we can speak and write something. All those styles must be used or present in teaching English Language. Although it is hard to achieve, at least there are some teachers who give give their best to attain those styles.
First is to listen, it is really not difficult to listen to what others are talking about. But we as listeners should also take our part. We listen as well as put it in our minds and understand what is the real content of the speaker.
Second is reading, reading is also not a hard thing to do. we just used our eyes in reading such articles, stories or some topics. But we should also understand what we are reading. If our teacher gave a article to read we should be able to know the main idea.
Third is viewing, if the teachers used the style of viewing there is also an entertainment connected to it. For lots of students, viewing is really more fun than reading.
Fourth is speaking, it is one of the things I really considered a hard task. Speaking of what Iearned is really complicated for me. It is hard for me to speak in front especially in english language. Even though it will be really a great help to learn to speak because in the future it will be a tool to get a job such as in interviews.
Lastly is writing, it is somewhat same to speaking but you just write in a piece of paper what you want to say or express. What is difficult is to construct the sentences in your essay, article and etc.
In conlusion, all those styles are really a great help in teaching english language as well as learning about it will help us to understand more the beauty of english subject.

In my perspective, I would like to have emphasis on Speaking, because as we can observed, most of us cannot speak fluently especially in front of many people. We may have the ideas in our mind but we are unable to tell it to others because we do not have the confidence and we feel shy to say it. In this case, participation of a student is minimal, they may have the ideas that they have read, wrote, heard from listening and views but if they do not know how to speak or how to say it, they cannot express what they wanted to told you. Teachers may start in having an oral recitation one day in a week that can enhance the speaking ability of a student..

  30. All of the theories stated above are all important skills in teaching. People, especially teachers, have different techniques and strategies in teaching, and that's what makes them unique and different from any other teachers, but if you ask me, I'd would choose SPEAKING as the best skill in teaching.

For me, I chose SPEAKING because through speaking, you can clearly say out loud what's on your mind and what you feel about a certain thing. When you SPEAK, people LISTEN, because they hear your voice, and when they listen, they VIEW the things you've said in their mind, and when they've already viewed it in their mind, they WRITE it down, especially if it's something wonderful, knowledgeable, or thoughtful. Speaking is important when it comes to teaching. When the teacher speaks, the students will listen, it will be easier for them to learn and understand something because the topic being discussed in class is already being said, and the students will no longer have a hard time understanding the lessons of the subject, especially when the teacher explains more about the subject, the only thing the students need to do is listen attentively.

In my perspective written above, I did not degrade the other skills and theories in teaching, I simply wrote my own opinion about the teaching skill that should be given emphasis in English 1. Some people easily learn when WRITING,READING, SPEAKING or even VIEWING. We all have different skills and techniques in learning or teaching. It's just a matter or understanding, analyzing, and proper deliverance of the skill.

  31. In the article above, their are skills mentioned such as, writing, reading, speaking, listening, viewing, this skills are given such meanings and how to apply.
Since I am in the process on learning this skill, for me it must be delivered on a high quality of teaching and ideas, and gives us encouragement to learn and apply this skills since it is needed for us students and even though we are not really in the environment to learn(kay vintage ang room) but I hope we are on the environment of learning and I hope our professor in English 1 will be more energetic and Idealistic more than before, so that maybe through this we will learn more and want to learn more.

    that's all thank you :)

  32. First of all I want to say that I warmly appreciated the content of this article and as of me all that is written here is significant however the techniques in teaching English 1 will be depending on the students but I advice that English 1 should be taught in listening technique because today in our generation many students is good in listening :)

  33. In this article i prefer to use listening because based on my experience I easily understand on this theory. In teaching I prefer speaking because some students don't know how to speak English in precise grammars, so should use speaking in teaching students to enhance their grammar.

Based on the article that stated above; listening, reading, speaking, writing and viewing are important in English language. As a learner, I should learn and develop all of these skills for me to prosper my knowledge in English language. All of these theories are essential in teaching. Now a days, these skills are very useful and indispensable in the world of English language. For me, a teacher must indeed teach and help the students to develop our skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. By this, we can obtain knowledge and effective way of teaching. :-)
