Teaching English to Engineering Students

Messy rooms, noisy students, big number of students. These are the common problems that a teacher encounters at the College of Engineering at the University of Southeastern Philippines. I have been handling English at the College of Engineering for five years, and I do not regret.

Speech. Party. Fun. The BS Mechanical Engineering students during the Culminating Actvity in Speech and Oral Communication.  They delivered their respective speeches based on the occasion.

They say that it is difficult to handle the Engineering students primarily because of the messy rooms. Chairs, and tables in the rooms are ancient, so you must be careful for if not, you will be disappointed as you get stain from the chairs. Chalkboards also are not that tempting for a teacher to write, so in my case, I seldom use the chalkboard. I always use my voice to get the attention of my students. Yes, it is true that classroom really affects the learning of the students, and it is now a challenge on my part on how to deal on this issue. Since 2008, I have never uttered bad words about the scenario because I know that this is USEP. I finished my undergraduate and graduate degrees from this university so I am very aware of the condition of the classrooms here. I can still recall that in 2009, I handled English 3 (Speech ad Oral Communication) class at the Chemistry Laboratory, fifth floor, at the College of Engineering. Wow! How would I handle this class? I reflected and continued to handle the class at the Chemistry Laboratory since this was our assigned room. I could not look for another room because all rooms were occupied. Everytime my students brought this issue, I just said that, “This is USEP. But let this not disappoint you, instead, take this a challenge”. And my students often replied, “ Tama jud Sir. Daghan baya board passers diri”.

Another hurdle that you would encounter when you teach at the College of Engineering is the noise of the students. Since I am handling Engineering students, it is expected that majority of the students are men. Dota, basketball, and cartoons are the common topics that create noise among these men and it is not new to me. Sometimes, I join the conversation so that they would feel that I am with them, and this is a good strategy in order to establish a good relationship with them. That is why everytime I meet my Engineering students , they usually call my name and smile at me though I gave them low grades. I realize that students do not have hatred in their hearts when I gave them low grades because they still smile at me, and this is because I instilled in their minds that I am just giving the grade that they deserve. So, walang personalan. My student teachers usually comment, “ Sir, daghan lagi ka fans sa Engineering building.” I then replied, “Mao na akong gipang 3.0. hahaha.” Yes, Engineering students are nosiy, that is why at the start of the class, I orient them that if I talk, they should listen to me. And if someone is caught talking, I usually get his attention for him to be reminded that he is violating my policy.

The BS Geodetic Engineering students have a pose with their English 3 professor

Newly hired teachers usually say ,” Daghan kaayo ko students sa Engineering. Paita.” I just smile and say, “ That is no longer new. Eversince the world began, the class size at the College of Engineering is 50+. So take it or leave it?!”. Once you handle Engineering students, you need to be brilliant in employing teaching strategies in order to get the attention of these students, of course, in order for them to learn. I am just lucky because the Language Department has modules and textbooks, a big help on how to deal with these students. And I always search for new texts, new strategies to cope with the needs and wants of my learners. I use texts from the Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Geology.

Yes, it is a tiring task, but at the end of the day, you will be happy as you hear your students saying, “ Thank you Sir. We learned a lot through your activities which are not boring”.

  2. Man encounters different situations in life and many factors that makes man disappointed on that situations. But on the case of Mr. Sajed it is not, but instead he used these as an advantage to handle the very good students of the college of engineering, and these also the things that Sir Sajed want to teach to us. That we must be patient, disciplined, aware, humble, down to earth, to be a good listener, to be a good learner, then Sir also want to teach us on how to develop our adaptation skills that despite of the bad conditions, the presence of mind are still there to handle and make the situation successful and that's what Sir Sajed Ingilan shares to us through this text and I am very agree to his procedures.

And for the part of us students we must be respectful of our teachers, because it is not an easy thing to them to handle us. Imagine how many things, moments, and wants that our teachers sacrificed? Many! So we must be thankful to them despite of those things they choose us to share their knowledge for that we can learn.

Then now the question is how can we show that respect? The answer is we must cooperate, having good relation to them is a big thing.

Finally, Sir thank you for your full effort in handling us, and making us as a good student, and Sir God may bless you.

  3. Teaching English to Engineering students is one of the tasks that Sir Sajed encountered.
Teachers are there do teach us, its a bonus when they give love to us and it is better to bring back the love that they are giving to us. Teaching with a huge number of students is hard, because you don't know what strategies or techniques you must apply in order to caught the attention of the students. But Sir Sajed used his voice to to make his students listen to him and as his student he make some jokes and bond like a friend, like one of us but with respect.
From pre-school up to college English is always there and teachers are also there to teach us.
I thank the teachers, who have broad patience and the knowledge they shared.

  4. At some point in your schooling, you’re likely to have
instructors whom you love (and who enjoy you), instructors who are neutral, and instructors who seem to dislike you and give you problems. Even good students come across instructors who seem to simply dislike them and appear to treat them unfairly.
But in Sir Sajed case he is inspiring you to work well to
your studies. An effective teacher demonstrates a caring attitude.Sir Sajed is the teachers who loves his job can struggle in this area, not because they don’t care, but because they get caught up so much in the day to day routine of teaching that they can forget that their students have lives outside of school. Taking the time to get to know a student on a personal level takes a lot of time and dedication. There is also a line that no teacher wants to cross where their relationship becomes too personal.
Sir Sajed, are often the ones that many students think are the most difficult. This is because they challenge their students and push them harder than the average teacher does. He is the teacher who are often students’but then later on in life they are the ones that we all remember and want to thank, because of how well they prepared us for life after our time with them. Being an effective teacher does not mean you are easy. It means that you challenge every one of your students and maximize your time with them so that they learn more than they ever thought they could learn.
and I want to thank one of the teacher ,Sir Sajed for being patience with his students ..
Being a teacher is a kind of Hero, you always helping people
in Sir Sajed case he always teaching students, even though the classrooms are messy, dirty, ruined, conducive. He inspiring students, and always say's that the classroom are not the base for you to not study.

    Thank you Sir.

  5. As a teacher you will experience many different students, with many different strengths and weaknesses. The best way to deal with this is to have a good lesson that is active and encourages the participation of every student in the room. An active student is not usually a problem student. No matter what the problem, the best policy is to keep your cool.
Like Sir Sajed,he's always acting cool when he was talking or teaching to his students even though the classrooms are not conducive. And for me, it is best way to make a good relationship to all students.
And I want to thank all teachers who have long patience and sharing their knowledge to us especially Sir Sajed Ingilan.

  6. At first we all know that teaching to engineering students is hard because the students are many and so noisy. Also the messy rooms and specially the CR is filthy and dirty.
But this article is all about a Professor's experienced in teaching English to Engineering students. It shows how the professor deals with the students specially with the environment. The article shared the strategies of the professor in handling these students, as orienting them that the students should listen if the professor talks. In this article the professor explains what is the feeling in teaching engineering students. It shows how the professor handle pressure and difficulties in teaching engineering students. Lastly it explains that teaching is not easy, you should be patient, open-minded, respectful, disciplined and specially you should love your job.
In this case, we students must respect our teacher and cooperate, because our teachers are our second parents. They are one who helps and guides us in a our studying. They are the one who motivates us that we can finish our studies and be professionals someday.

Thank sir for sharing this article, now i know what are the feelings of my teachers in handling us.(((((:

But let this not disappoint you, instead, take this a challenge”for me this is right instead of saying badwords or complainig just keep calm and take this as a challenge to us.And also he never give up on teaching..thats all,,keep on teaching bryan damayo bit-electrical 1

  8. Teachers are our second father/mother. It's really hard for them to be our teacher and at the same time as our father/mother who provide our needs to become successful to our dream career in life. They also have a family who need them too. So,being a teacher is like having a one more than family.
In this article,it is all about a teacher/professor who encountered an engineering class without a regret but instead happy of teaching them. It's really true that it's really hard to handle a class like that especially when you have messy rooms and students with different attitudes so, it's really hard to get all their attentions.Hatred to teachers is so common in school but if you have a good relationship towards the students it's so hard for the students to hide some hatred to their teachers because they know that, that kind of teacher always be right their to help them.
As a student,we must know that we are not here or we won't be here right now in this university without them since we are kindergarten up to this point of our study if they are not here to teach us.So, we must thank them for all the things that they ahve given to us.Always remember our teacher is our HERO.

Being a teacher in engineering students is a hard and difficult work to do. Especially when majority of the class are boys. But then if the teacher know how to handle the class and they add jokes in the discussion so that the students would be interested to listen and participate on the class.

As I experience in the class of Sir Sajed S. Ingilan (English 1), he add jokes to his discussion so that the class would not be boring. He also joined the discussion ( for the boys only) so that he can build a good relationship in the students. Sir Sajed is a good teacher not just in linguistic but also in the moral values which we can apply to our daily lives.

  10. To what had been written was just a primary example to what a teachers experience in their teaching in the college of engineering and as for me as a new student there agree to what were stated as a description of the school.Teachers knows best on how to handle his/her emotions towards the students because as to when you say students you are not just handling one mind or one attitude instead they would be acting as one when you know how to find the like of them and when you can follow their flow.It is so known that a teachers task is too hard when your hot headed but when as long as you know how to bring the crowd they will listen to you but as you bring the crowd you must not let the students bring the flow all the time but you must accompany it with learnings. For me being new saw the greatness as to how Sir Ingilan bring the students to his flow as them enjoying but learning much to the lessons being discuss because sir does not only focus to what were only written but expand more the ground to let them understand by breaking it all down to let them catch up if they couldn't easily understand the first definition.Finding it great to be handled with a teacher which has a great background of his chosen course that has a nice aura in bringing the crowd. The facility can help the learning of the student but even if in engineering or the school does not have a so called high quality of technologies but yet the teaching in here is so much enough to the students to learn just like in our english that we usually found it hard to understand and as to how to speak with it fluently but yet still has a deepen mind about it that we are just still climbing to our dreams to be teached with the so called english to be part in our life to speak with the language the world agree with.Using visual aids to teach a student is great that would let them copy the definition and as the lesson is being explained he would find the key words to what the main topic would be.As our teacher in english knows that the teenagers now can easily remember funny things that's why as to how my insight to the teaching of our teacher in letting the class laugh but the most important to it is that through this are the bit of information that would be likely the clue to the topic and will let us connect it to the words that we intact to our mind. Our teacher experienced a lot in other countries to how to speak in english that's why he can give us examples in his lesson.Greatness is not achieve easily in life just like our teacher he was just like us in the past trying to find ways to climb to the top and as to what he said on the first day of our class that he is not there to harm us but to guide us is true even if we find it unfair to see our grades low but yet it doesn't show a person's learning but on how he/she apply it in his/her life and our teachers are just their to teach on how their experience were like in the past on being a student just like us to be molded to greatness and to achieve with flying colors.

  11. Teaching students is really a tough job. But in this article, I realized that Sir Sajed Ingilan had patience and perseverance so he can teach students even though this students were noisy and stubborn. He never regret to teach engineering students even though they are noisy and the room is messy but still, he never gave up to teach students. Like his experience in 2009, he taught English 3 to engineering students at the Chemistry Laboratory. I know it was a quite hard for him because of the venue and I also know that it is really tiring to go at Chemistry Laboratory because it is located at the fifth floor.
In that experience, I can see in him that he has perseverance to teach students in spite of those hindrances.

Sir Sajed is really a good teacher, I always learn new things in his class and I can hear new terms from him. He is a funny teacher, cool and fashionable. He is also an intelligent teacher and I can say that he is intelligent because of his academic achievements.

I really thank USEP because here, I encountered a very great English teacher and I hope he will not stop to teach students. Never stop teaching sir even if you will be assigned again at Chem. Lab.

Keep Calm and Teach English :)

  12. Teaching in college is a hard job especially in the college of engineering where most of the students are boys. Also, with the facilities in the college of engineering, makes it more difficult for the teachers to instill in the minds of the students the topic or lesson which are being discussed.
Sir Sajed's article is based on his experiences as a teacher in the college of engineering, and I as a student knows how difficult it is to have a class like ours in ME1-1 which are boys in majority. Sir Sajed does not only talk in front of the class for his job to be done but instead he creates bonds with us students for us to learn.

This article is kind of funny for me, it relates to many teachers and also students on how tough is to teach especially to a very huge number of students added to that is the lack of facilities like classrooms, chairs, etc.which adds to the loads of the teachers. In this article Mr. Sajed S. Ingilan tells what are common problems he suffers on handling his students and how it affects to him and with his students.

The University of Southeastern Philippines is one of the the schools which suffers from this problems affecting the students and more on the teachers. That is why I'm very thankful to teachers like Mr. Sajed S.Ingilan for still stays to teach the students in the USeP, for doing different strategies to avoid the students to become boring in the class. Thanks to Mr. Sajed S. Ingilan who still teach despite the lack of facilities and different problems he encounters ahe College Of Engineering In USeP.

  15. Parent ? or a Teacher ? ...

Everyone knows that being a parent to their children is not that easy . Sometimes in being parent , it comes to the point that they want to give up , they want everything to lose and that because of the problems , trials , and circumstances we encounter in our daily life . Just like our teacher/professor , inspite of every noise coming from different classrooms and in corridors , the chairs and tables scattered everywhere , the disgusting smell from CRs , and a very crowded place of the College of Engineering in University of Southeastern Philippines , teachers usually take it as a challenge and not a hindrance.

Sir Sajed said , “This is USEP. But let this not disappoint you, instead, take this as a challenge” . This lines awakens my mind . From the first day I entered the building , I was shocked because of the environment but I keep on saying "maanad ra lagi ko" , and later on , I entered confidently without minding the environment.

Since that day , I realized that I as a student was annoyed , how much more the professors ? . And thats the good thing . Our teacher is our second parent . They help us to gain more knowledge and reach our goals in life . They teach us values that could develop ourselves and be morally upright person . So , students , let's soar high ! Let's not mind about terror teachers , instead be inspire .

  16. Being a teacher is a very tough profession. They serve as our guide in our studies and also in our real life.

In this article, Sir Sajed shows his ability, being smart and patient. Though problems are there to interrupt the class, he still find ways to get things right. The condition of the classrooms in the engineering building in USEP, as what is said in the article, is true. Messy rooms, rusty chairs and the chalkboards are not in good condition. Like his experience with the English 3 students in 2009. They had their class in the Chemistry Laboratory, fifth floor of the engineering building. It is difficult for him because the room is found at the top of the engineering building and the room is not at its best for learning. We know that it is tiring to go at Chem.Lab. But still, he find ways like encouraging and inspiring the students. He also speaks cool that gets the attention of the students. He also joins us in our discussion with the boys which makes the bond stronger.

Mr. Sajed S. Ingilan is really a good teacher. We could learn a lot of things mostly based on his experiences. We could learn a lot of new terms/vocabularies. The way he utter the words is unique. The way he teach the students is great.

It is a great opportunity for me to be a student of Mr. Sajed S. Ingilan.

  18. The article states how the english professor, Mr. Sajed S. Ingilan adapted to USEP, specifically in the College of Engineering. Despite the untidy rooms, the noisy students and many more hindrance in learning, he created an environment suitable for learning.

Mr. Ingilan socialized with the students, joining some conversations with them just to show that he is not only an academic teacher but also a good friend. He did not let any facilities that the school could only offer alter the quality of education that the students deserve. That's why, no matter how low the grade he gave to the students, they would still act nice to him for he has been an excellent teacher to them. From the strategies to the class activities, Sir Sajed did not let the class down.

    HOW TO TEACH ENGINEERING STUDENTS?

Imagine a room with complete and fresh facilities. Imagine a massive student gathering with the same topics and ideas evaluating it as one. What a relief for the teachers would be.
A room with complete structure and appreciable facilities has a great impact to the validity of the students mind to absorb every lesson that a teacher would administer them. According to the text, it is also important for us to feel comfortable to focus on our study. What if your classrooms are lock of facilities? How would your teacher handle it? Don’t be surprise if I will tell you that I’m not new to it, because while it is still loading in your mind, I had been experiencing that particular situation I formerly asked you. I tell you, this is the case of the teachers of engineering in USEP. The text states that the teachers of engineering like Sir Sajed Ingilan should use various technics to encourage the engineering students to focus on their lessons. Since the black boards are not that comfortable to write on, Sir Sajed uses his powerful voice. That technic is very appreciable because the lessons resonates not only in our ears but it flows through our minds also. Although it sounds like a punishment for the teachers, he viewed it as a challenge, and in my own opinion that particular reason made him more tough in the eyes of the students.
For the second situation wherein teachers tend to have a problem on the culture of the students makes it harder to teach a vast number of students. We are more fun of talking things that is out of the topic, or it may relate but in a way that it is hard to ride with, especially with the boys because according to the text, engineering students are abundant in men. In that case Sir Sajed usually joins the conversation to get their attention, I know he’s doing it to bring those people back into the line with the topic.
Engineering is very difficult course that is in need of deep understanding and a lot of new information to be tackled by the teachers, so, Sir Sajed always search for new texts, new strategies to cope with the needs of the students. In this case, I really appreciate the effort that Sir Sajed did for the engineering students, because with the new information and new strategies, students of engineering in USEP will not be left by the fast changing world.
There is no gain without pain they said, I really salute those teachers who stands for us inorder to teach and introduce the world to us. What a hero they are comparable to, nothing I guess. Teachers like them who did not loose their interest in teaching us must be appreciated like Sir Sajed who tend to gain the respect of the students even though he used to give them low grades. What secret lies within him that made the students like him inspite of the circumstances USEP have? You answer.
For me it is not the facilities that lead us on top, it is not about the culture of the students, But how do the teachers mold us. Can your teacher do that? Only teachers with full motivation to teach their students are capable of it I guess.

  20. The article states about the GREAT experiences of the professor. I just called it GREAT because base on his experiences he undergo hardships like handling a large number of class, messy rooms, noisy students and a little bit foul odor of rest rooms. ;) But that is the challenge of our professor, and luckily he surpassed it.
In my points of view, it is such an honor to have a kind of professor like him. We can easily mingle to him, but not like being a student's pet. Instead, we can seek for advice to him in case of we're down. Having a prof. like him is very rare. So I'm happy to have him as our English Professor.
But none other than that, I salute the professor who endure the obstacles in this university. :))) And I myself is also willing to graduate in this establishment. ^____^V

You gave us strength in every step of the way. I am glad that you are my teacher in English because the way you teach us is not boring and every time we have an activity in class you often tell us stories that would make us all laugh like teaching us a new word like "bum-bum/boom-boom" that word really made a huge impact to all the boys in class. You are the best Teacher in this world. I am really thankful to God for blessing me with a teacher like you. You are not only my teacher; you are my friend, mentor and guide, all rolled into one person. I will always be grateful to you for your support and kindness to all of us. Even i can't understand "bisaya" because of you sir I'm trying to learn just like you said "let this not disappoint you, instead, take this a challenge”. 24. I do agree in this passage. As a freshman student, I have been adjusting to this new environment. Truly, the College of Engineering Bldg. is not that great. "Messy rooms, noisy and big number of students" as what Sir Ingilan had stated through this article. Yet, the appearance and what can we directly see through our naked eyes are not that important when it comes to the quality education. What really matters most is what is happening inside that ragged and ancient rooms. Professors molding every student they handle to be a successful and victorious person in the near future. Molding them to be a World Class Engineers.

It is written on the history of USeP or specifically on the College of Engineering, how many students have undergone through the teachings of Sir Sajed Ingilan. And through this article you can truly see how close and how strong are the bonds between him and his past students. It only proves how great his teaching skills and strategies that would make him blend in with his students and make him a remarkable and an unforgettable mentor. Perseverance and his will keeps him from teaching engineering students despite the factors onto what kind or how the engineering students behave during his class.

We do feel comfortable with you Sir because it seems like you are one of us and you always join us no matter how crazy we get. And yes, we know it has limitations too.

I just like to question one thing. Sir, did you orient us, the EN1-4, during our first meeting about your policies, rules and regulations? If so, I'm sorry i forgot.

Keep up the good work Sir Sajed Ingilan! For Immortality is a by-product of good work.

  25. when you enrolled to this university. As we all know that this university is high standard, but their facilities were not so dainty such as classroom, chairs, board, and etc. This university is known by being a top 5 university in ASIAN region. Being a students in this university, it's up to you being tactics or initiative on how you will find a solution to this kind of circumstance.

As i read this article, i was amazed to the professor, although the students were so noisy as well as the rooms were so messy. He can still handle that kind of situation. The professor knows how to miggle to his students. No matter how the classroom are so messy,It's now a hindrance to him to teach his noisy students.

  26. "Engineers build bridges, doctors heal the sick, artists do portray, army fights for the country, geologists find resources; but teachers made them all"!

Just a common passage yet leave a great impact for our teachers. Being one is not easy because like parents, what their students may become reflect on what kind of teacher are they.

In relation to the article given, being a teacher to a huge class with unhealthy environment, impartial learning equipment plus the western-influenced values of the students is not that easy to cope with. But a teacher whose oriented to the welfare of the well-being of his students disregard all those factor in order to deliver the appropriate learning that his students deserve. A teacher should not the one to complain rather, he is the one who inspires no matter how messy the situation may be.

And Sir Sajed Ingilan as based on his article is a teacher who has been equipped to the true essence of teaching. No matter what culture, department, course may be given to him he still able to handle the class with vigor and learning-filled for his students. He'd been able to initiate a lot of strategy according to the quality and behavioral manners of his students.

Finally, his strategies mold a lot to the students to pursue their studies and prove that they were capable enough to be one of the students of the University of Southeastern Philippines which is one of the best Universities in the Philippines.Facilities doesn't matter, all that matter is the knowledge that we will get from the exceptional professor like Mr. Sajed Ingilan who takes the important role in every students.

  27. Teaching was never an easy job. It takes passion, love and hardwork. According to the article that was authored by Mr. Ingilan, he stated the negative things about the school and its facilities. Yet, he showed that despite of these facts, there are no regrets that can be heard from him; especially that he is handling engineering students.
From what I have read, it is undeniable that USeP lacks the facilities that are needed for the learning of the students. However, Mr. Ingilan took this as a challenge and not a hindrance, because he knows that the interest for learning is much more important than the facilities. The things that he said opened up my mind and inspired me more to learn. His strategies made the students cope up and made them more interested in the subject. He teaches students in a fun and systematic way wherein we could learn a lot and at the same time, he socializes with them. A teacher and a student relationship is an important factor for the student to not lose his interest in learning.
As what Horace Mann quoted, “A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron. “ I am proud that you are my mentor, Sir Sajed Ingilan. Thank you for being an inspiration to us and for the patience.

  28. Broken chairs, not functioning fans and uncomfortable rooms are just few of the new things I've encountered this start of college. There is also the dirty bathrooms, the people and the ever tiring stairs. But among all new things I've faced, the thing I like the most is the teachers.

I admit that I am not used with the kind of environment I'am experiencing now, especially with the teachers. Teachers here are equipped. They are not just ordinary teachers but they are teachers that have been exposed to other things. They are smarter and wiser. They are also stronger and braver.

But despite the environment, the teachers here doesn't mind all those things. They do not find it as a hindrance to their work, instead they find it a challenge. It's great to see that the teachers accept and adapt to what the institution have. I even find the line "warrior na kaayo ning mga teachers diri ba" inspiring because if teachers can maximize the things we have now, why can't I?

After I read the article, I remembered what the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt(wife of Pres. Franklin Roosevelt)quoted. She said that:

"You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.".

I can relate this quotation to what Sir Sajed is doing EVERYDAY. Going to teach at the College of Engineering everyday is really a hard and backbreaking task. Primarily, because of the messy and disheveled rooms. And next is because of the cracker jack and savvy engineering students. I salute to Sir Sajed for the courage of accepting the challenging duty that was given to him. Indeed, we are very thankful Sir that you are our teacher. Since, you're a teacher that can be treated as a "barkada". Thank you for being a role model to all of us and we also acknowledge your power of inspiring us. Thank you for having a great imagination. I was amazed because you imagined some good strategies to establish good relationship with us which the other teachers failed to give to us. Thank you very much Sir.

Since I started this with a quote. So, I'll end it up with one too:

  30. The article declares the obstacles, and difficulties that Mr. Ingilan, our English 1 teacher has encountered on his career. For me, he really showed his professionalism skills, even though he encounters these difficulties, he never take this as barriers to his career but instead he took this as challenge, for him to become more professional. Mr. Ingilan always gave us, his students, enjoyable discussions for us to have energy to cooperate in his session. He always leaves us different learnings in the different aspects of our life. Now, I realized that Sir. Ingilan really possesses good virtues in life, he has this what we call patience, patience to manage his very noisy students, and he is also an optimistic one, he never loses hope, he finds ways in order to eliminate negatives . As what Bhumibol Adulyadej said,

“A good person can make another person good; it means that goodness will elicit goodness in the society; other persons will also be good."

Sir Ingilan is a very good person, so I do really hope that we will learn bundles of good lessons from him, and if he teaches very well, no wonder, his English students would be very thankful to him, on what he had done and thought to them.

Mr. Ingilan, is really a clever one. We all know that being a Professor is a very challenging role, especially when you are handling hard-headed and noisy batch of students. You, being in touched with this career, you really enhanced your skills and did your best just to satisfy our needs to learn. For that, I’m thankful because you really know what strategies can really catch our attention, you really know how to manage us. Thanks.

  31. College of Engineering. When you're a USEPIAN and you hear the word College of Engineering the first thing that comes to your mind is a topsy-turvy classrooms and not so good facilities. But even if its facilities are not highly equipped, the teachers here are the ones who give life to the students to make them globally competitive and competent.

A great example of a responsible teacher is Sir Sajed Ingilan. I thank him for being so consistent in the classroom, even on days when he is not in high spirits but still spent the effort and time to teach our class. He never failed to take the time to review our works, and he always gives us real and honest feedbacks.

I thank him for being so motivated, even when we have shown little or no interest in lectures by sleeping, texting, or talking unnecessary things behind his back. It takes guts to do that, and I’m sure we don’t realize or acknowledge how much he has to sacrifice order to teach us.

So Sir Ingilan, thank you for everything and may God bless you always.

  33. In the classroom a teacher's job is to ensure the goals of education which can be specified as learning in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in specific subjects. It is through these subjects that a teacher strives to achieve school goals as well as all-round development of students, which is the broader goal of education.

Along with this task of molding students to be globally competitive, problems arise within the institution specifically in the College of Engineering. These problems may or may not affect the learning process of students. Messy rooms and noisy environment are examples.

But despite these problems, let's not be discouraged by what we have. As the author said, "let this not disappoint you, instead, take this as a challenge”. We must take this as an inspiration to strive in our dreams and goals. And most of all, we should always remember that everything is just a matter of sacrifice in order to reach our goals. I salute all of the teachers in the world.

Teaching is defenitely a hard job specially when you have the most destructive area, less facilities, and hard headed students.
College of Engineering is one of the less fortunate building at USEP. We don't have enough chair, so sometimes late students intend to barrow chairs from other classrooms. When you pass or enter at our building, you'll first notice the smelly odor coming from the C.R., next is the noisy student talking while walking at the aisle while others are seatting at the stairs. This noise is what bothers and irratates students with class specially those with exams and quizzes. So in order to minimize the noise, we close our doors and continue our lectures. This is indeed a challenging task to students and teachers on how they will going to manage or handle this kind of scenario. Our English instructor Mr. Ingilan, can now easily handle this kind of setting because of his work experience and being professional and having the knowledge about the right thing to do during this scenario.
College of Engineering mostly occupied by men, so our instructor must have the right and nice strategies on how to catch the attention of his/her student. Not only men but also wen busy touching thier staffs aand phones. So, to gain respect and attention taechers and students must have a magical band that connecting to each other in order to create a good communication, and relation. Teachers need to socialized with their student for them to know their strenght ang weaknesses. And this what Mr. Ingilan acting/doing to get our attention.
So, teaching at College of Engineering is not that easy nor to hard, its just challenging . Teachers and students must have a connecting band. Being one of the freshmen at College of Engineering s really challenging but FUN. So we will fight till we reach the top, still connectinv.

  36. The mediocre teachers tells. The good teachers explains. The superior teachers demonstrate. The great teachers inspires.
This is what Sir Sajed doing now, to teach us better and for us to gain more knowledge. and because he is a TEACHER.

We all know that teaching is hard specially when students are crowd and the facilities are not well organized, messy and noisy. And I do agree to Sir Sajed that chairs and tables are ancient but it is not a hindrance to teach the students well. Sir Sajed survived for five years without regrets because I know that it is what he wants to do.
Some people say that Engineering students are difficult to handle but they don't know when the class started we're getting serious. I do believe the sayings "Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning".
I laugh when I read Sir Sajed said "Chalkboards also are not that tempting for a teacher to write, so in my case, I seldom use the chalkboard." because it is true, but it is okay because he never disappoint us to listen him.

Learning English is never difficult, its just a matter of patient and understanding, deeper understanding for us to know the meaning of what is been said and to know how to construct a sentence.
and Sir thank you for being a good teacher to us even thou we're not close.

  37. “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”- Henry Brooks Adams
As someone would walk into the profession of being an educator, hauling with him are greater errands and responsibilities ahead. Being a teacher requires love, interest, patience, passion and dedication. He himself would eagerly stand as a parent to each and every student of the class, molding, developing, and guiding them towards attaining the word success.
Based on the article of Mr. Sajed Ingilan, he brought up diverse problems about being a teacher, the student’s manners and inadequate school facilities. But these problems he had come across did not become an encumbrance in pursuing his goal which is to teach; rather these problems became a challenge for him to overcome his struggles and to help the young ones in reaching their goals in life. With his encompassing experiences that he had brought over the years, these helped him in adjusting and making stratagem for his students to be able to comprehend and learn new tidbits of knowledge every meeting.
Mr. Ingilan, is a great teacher indeed or should I also say he is a well-equipped one. Inadequate school facilities were not that really a huge problem for him, because what matters most are the welfare and the erudition of his learners. And instead of being discouraged and getting mad upon entering the doors of a four-walled room hearing those annoying and irritating noise of the students, he looked it in a brighter side and tried to mingle and let them feel compatibility with one another, he also pointed out the word respect to students which is very essential and a must thing to do for every humankind.
But despite on everything on what he has been through, Mr. Sajed Ingilan has left footprints and did his significant role on every student of the University of the Southeastern Philippines.

Experiences that are really undesirable and it include having an unpleasant environment while teaching. Despite the irregularities in the university, Mr. Ingilan learns how to cope up with it and he uses strategies that can catch the attention of the students for the education to takes place. One of the strategies that he uses is joining in the unnecessary conversation of the noisy students to be able to have a good relationship with them. A good relationship that includes having no hatred when the students are given low grades. A teacher like Mr. Sajed Ingilan is very rare in our generation because of the western influences. But teaching is not easy, especially when the environment is a bit mess and the students are hard to handle. This things was accomplished by Mr. Sajed , a great mentor in the well-known university in the Philippines. Despite of the environment and misbehavior of students, still he is continuing to share his knowledge to his students, giving them great knowledge with his full abilities in order for his students to learn well. He also treats his students as a brother who can easily be mingled with and value them as one of his children. He is considerate in terms of the feelings of each one because he was once a college student like us he already felt what we are feeling at the moment we enter the university.
Mr. Sajed is known to be a wise, considerate, and a humble professor in this unversity because of his talent to carry his students’ capabilities to its ultimate limit. Having a good relationship with the USEPian students make him known and brought a satisfactory harvest to be able to have a great reputation and character to every people.

Although it is hard to handle sometimes like us engineering students because of our weird auras, he still able to overcome and control every situation and be respected by every students. With full of learning techniques make the students to learn a lot of knowledge especially in terms of the modern terms in the field of the sentences.

  44. Being a teacher is a very difficult job, when I was still young, I perceived that a teacher's job is easy compared to the other jobs that you can get, they just teach the students of what they have learned before, but they try to learn it again based on the flow of the things they should teach, then let the students answer quizzes, activities, or make them do projects, also if they feel like making the students suffer, they do so, that's why I think it is easy, but it is not, as they say, you should not judge a book by its cover, read it first so that you'll know how beautiful the story goes or what the book truly contains.

As what I have said, being a teacher iS difficult because you need different strategies and lots of patience. But in sir Sajed's case it is just a piece of cake because he handles it very well in his own way. Even though the facilities are lacking, the rooms are very messy and the environment is very noisy. Not all teachers can handle the engineering students but sir Sajed does because he find ways that could make his work easier and better. I strongly agree in his own way of molding his students.

  45. Sir Ingilan states that Engineering Students are noisy.Well that is true, some are productive noise, some are just chitchats or just any noise produced by those people on the engineering building. That is a usual difficulty that can affect many like listening to the teacher's lessons, concentration in drawing, etc. If we students thought that it is hard for us to learn in a very noisy environment,as well as the students, teachers have also difficulty in teaching in a very noisy place.Aside from the noise, many other factors may affect the studies of the students. Some problems are messy classrooms and old facilities in the building.Although this things are happening, students and teachers would have to deal with it.No other choice,so we must adjust on whatever noise or mess that we might encounter on the building. That's why we students must do our best to learn even if it is a hard thing for us,as what our teachers or instructors are doing for us in the same environment.

“Bugoya jud aning mga taga- engineering oy.”

“Sus, kanang mga taga engineering? Di man na kabalo mu English!”

Startling isn’t it? But whether I like it or not, these has been the statuses of the college I have entered. For so many years, according to many, engineering students are generalized to the extremes: either being the nerdest of nerds or the front liners responsible for the greatest mischief their respective campuses has ever seen. But in this institution, it’s the latter… yet I do not deny these descriptions, but for one.

College of Engineering. If you ever pass by our university, this is the one flanked with ruined machines and whose face is collaged by rusty glass windows, some of which are either shattered or immovable. Upon entering this fortress is the drawing room, a place dotted with tables and chairs that are, let’s say, not so serving its purpose. Sometimes, you have to be extra careful and vigilant to dodge raindrops, dust, or even nasty falling debris solely for the critical life of your plate.

Now let’s go up. Most (if not all) floors of this building has its own comfort room—a breezy room wafting great smells to the corridors and nearby rooms. But let’s take it. That’s life. Whatever we say, whatever we do, there will always be critics to our every action; and how we shape our lives depends on how we take these critiques.

People are what they are. The best way to penetrate someone deeper is to be with them: the best way to dig deeper into engineering students is by playing their game, learning their language and style, being somewhat like them. After all, they are still humans, like any other person we meet every day.

Mischievous? Yeah, we’re like that. We do that. And we enjoy that. Want to know why? To relieve ourselves of the pressure buildup! We’re just like any other student who wants to graduate in college, any other who can be pressurized. We know it won’t be an easy road, but who in this world would even say so? The geniuses will, and unfortunately, I am not one of them.

Furthermore, we cannot generalize the whole group just because of a few people. Even in statistics, you need a systematized way of sampling in order to get a fair data of the whole subject being studied. We’re just having our way of things, and we choose to do it in a mischievous manner. We choose to do it funny. But we also know that this course cannot be done by a load of jokes. We all have to work hard, what may be sufficient for us may not be sufficient for our superiors and for our chosen path.

And yes, dust, rust, rags, great smell… what are they anyway? Perhaps, people have forgotten how this college repetitively triumphed different fields and made its country and city proud.

But no matter what I say, I know this racism will never end because it’s a part growing up, a part of surviving. No matter what people say, this is us. This is our mark. We can change, but that would be our choice to make.

Lastly, I hate to press this to people, but we do know how to read, write and speak a certain global language.

  48. Messy rooms, ancient chairs and tables, unflattering blackboards, inadequate facilities, and don’t even make me start about the heat inside the classrooms. I won’t hide the fact that I was utterly disappointed the first time I entered into the College of Engineering. On the first day of my college life, Room 305, all I could think about was how I would be able to concentrate on my lesson and learn in this sort of environment. I thought I had seen it all, the harsh reality of the difference dwelling between private and public schools. Yes, I studied in a private school in my elementary days and when I entered high school I moved to a public school. The difference was overwhelmingly stunning. Lessons are spoon-fed, the teachers are the ones who care for the students and life at school is all easy-going, while the situations in public schools are polar opposites of everything.
I thought that I seriously regretted enrolling to a school that possesses very poor facilities with noise polluted surroundings, but thankfully that didn’t last long. On our first meeting with Sir Sajed S. Ingilan he said something that I will never forget. He told us that even though our school is very poor and lacks in all aspects, it is in the student to strive hard in order to reach his goals and persevere. Thanks to his words I was slowly able to adapt and adjust to the lifestyle as a USEPian, especially as an engineering student. I very much do agree Sir that learning is directly proportional to the unity between the students and their professor. On that note, I applaud you Sir for connecting and socializing with us students, and creating a positive learning environment.

  50. From what I have read, I can conclude that Sir Ingilan is a very patient teacher in a way that he neglects the teaching environment and focuses on the material to be tackled and not on the faulty/ lacking facilities. It is also evident (and for me it is) that Sir really finds ways in order for his class to be not boring but a lively class. True, he always cracks timely and effective jokes in class. I agree with the author when he said “This is USEP. But let this not disappoint you, instead, take this [as] a challenge”. because as we know it, life is not full of happy times, sometimes we really pass through sad times and times when new lack resources. In these times, we should be innovative and creative to improve our lives and not let ourselves be affected. Thank you sir.

  51. As what I've read, all I can say is that Sir Sajed is a wonderful teacher. Even though the facilities are not good, this is not a hindrance to teach the engineering students. He always finds a way to make the students to be lively and attentive. As what Sir Ingilan now in our class, I therefore conclude that he can be your friend, second father and everything. that's why many students liked him very much eventhough Sir gave them a grade of 3.0. I consider him as "supertman", why? It is because he is so creative in terms of talking and even in teaching in the way that all his students can understand the topic well. In terms of facilities,he always says that USEP lack in facilities and how can he gave a good teaching to his students. Because of these, Sir Sajed proved to us that it is not the facilities that counts more it is the ability of the teacher that counts the most. Even if you have a beautiful and complete facilities but the ability of the teacher is too low there is no use at all. In generalization, I'm very thankful that Sir Sajed is one of our teacher and that I'm a Yanong USEPians....
